Broad Run shuts out Fauquier to win Griffis’ coaching debut

Junior QB Connor Jessop tossed three touchdown passes and the defense pitched a shutout to give Broad Run a 21-0 home victory against Fauquier on Friday night in Ashburn. Coach Matt Griffis made a successful debut as the two-time defending state champion Spartans extended their winning streak to 29 games.

Jessop connected with Steven Fields, Matt Preziotti and Caleb Lindsey for touchdowns in the first, second and fourth quarters. Jessop completed nine of 11 passes overall for 173 yards. Jessop was also Broad Run’s leading rusher with 57 yards on six carries. Along with hauling in a 46-yard scoring reception in the first quarter, Fields rushed eight times for 44 yards. Lindsey, also a defensive standout, caught a team-best three passes for 63 yards. Overall, seven different Spartans made at least one reception.

The visiting Falcons totaled 242 yards of offense, but were held off the scoreboard. Broad Run finished with 358 yards, a good mix of 185 rushing and 173 passing. Griffis, a longtime assistant coach under Mickey Thompson at Stone Bridge, won his head coaching debut at Broad Run. Griffis takes over for Michael Burnett, who is now the head coach at Tuscarora High School in Leesburg

Jessop went down on the first play of the Spartan's first offensive series after scrambling to the right for a 1st down but landing on his right throwing shoulder awkwardly in the process. Jessop would leave the game and not return and a broken collar bone is the apparent diagnosis. Heritage actually started the game with the ball after the Spartan's won the coin toss and chose to receive in the second half. The Pride put together a solid drive, often using screen passes from junior quarterback Austin Nelson to senior wide receiver Dan Dykema. The Pride drove deep into Spartan territory but could not convert on a 4th and 1.

Once Jessop was knocked out of the game, junior backup quarterback Jack Sistare came in and proved to be a very capable quarterback and leader of the offense. Behind direct snaps and hand-offs to juniors Markas Anderson and Derril Thomas, the Spartans were able to effectively move the ball throughout the game. After moving the ball up the field the Spartan's were forced to punt. The Pride struck first Friday night after big passes to Dykema and senior running back Aaron Summers. Nelson later threw a touchdown pass to Dykema at 3:39 in the first quarter giving the Pride an early 6-0 lead after a missed extra point. The Spartan's in their second possession used direct snaps to Anderson early on effectively advancing the ball. After facing a 4th and 1 the Spartan's were able to draw the Pride offside giving Broad Run a first down. After big runs by Thomas and a huge gain on a misdirection to senior running back Steven Field, the Spartan's scored on a run to Thomas making the score 6-6 after a blocked extra point attempt.

After a quick three and out by the Pride, the Spartan's took over, quickly moving the football up the field behind runs by Sistare and Anderson. Broad Run scored after a misdirection hand-off to Field, taking the lead 13-6 after a successful point after attempt by junior kicker Ryan Donnelly. Following two catches by Dykema, senior wide receiver Chuck Carlin broke multiple tackles and a would-be horse collar penalty on the way to an incredible touchdown which tied the game for the Pride 13-13.

After an onside kick was recovered by senior Eddie Barnes, Sistare, Field, and Anderson continued to run circles around the Heritage defense gaining first downs seemingly every other play. After scampering to his right, Sistare threw to the opposite side of the field to junior wide receiver Mike Price for a touchdown after a nice move by Price in the open field to find the endzone. After a missed extra point the Spartan's took the lead 19-13. The Pride took over with little time remaining before the end of the first half looking to not let the Spartans pull away. On a deep pass from Nelson, Dykema came down with a spectacular one-handed catch along the Spartan sideline putting the Pride within striking distance. On a pass to the endzone, junior linebacker Blake Duncan intercepted Nelson to end the half with the Spartans leading 19-13.

The second half turned out to be an entirely different story then the 1st half for both the Pride and the Spartans. The Spartan's began the second half with the football and showed they knew exactly what to do with it. After 1st down runs on direct snaps to Anderson, quarterback runs by Sistare, and a misdirection to Field, Thomas scored his second touchdown of the night on a direct snap in which he found a hole which led to the endzone. Thomas would later convert on a two-point conversion to give the Spartans a 27-13 lead.

After a 3 and out by the Pride capped off by a sack by junior defensive end Caleb Lindsay, Heritage was forced to punt. After a first down on yet another direct snap up the middle to Anderson, Thomas had a long TD run on a fake hand-off where his speed was showed off to everybody in Leesburg when he blasted through a hole in the defense and never looked back. The Spartans never looked back, taking the lead 34-13 and went on to win 41-19 after touchdowns by Anderson for Broad Run and Summers for Heritage. The ground attack by Anderson, Thomas, and Field along with the occasional scrambles by Sistare proved too much for the Pride as the Spartans proved, in the second half, why they haven't lost a game since 2007. Sistare stepping up for Broad Run shows that the Spartans won't be tripped up by the loss of Jessop for possibly the rest of the season.

Broad Run Shuts Out Jefferson Co. 42-0 by GamedayMagazine.com September 11, 2010 3:45 PM

STORY BY: ALEX KERR / GAMEDAY COLUMNIST

ASHBURN, VA - The Broad Run Spartan's cruised easily to a win Friday night (42-0) over the Jefferson Cougars, giving Broad Run a record of 3-0 on the year and 31-0 over the last three seasons. Throughout the night, the Spartan's defense dominated the Cougar's offensive line curtailing Jefferson's offense production. Led by junior defensive end Caleb Lindsey and senior defensive lineman Ryan Garrity, Broad Run caused havoc in the backfield and for the Jefferson quarterback throughout the night.

The Spartans got on the scoreboard first, following a blocked punt by junior Avery Campbell which was recovered by senior Mitch Nicholas for a touchdown. After the successful point after attempt by junior Ryan Donnelly, the Spartans took the lead 7-0 and never looked back.

After three and outs by Jefferson and Broad Run, the Cougars took possession near midfield. After a fumble recovery that was run in for a touchdown by Caleb Lindsey, the Spartans jumped out to a 14-0 lead before the end of the first quarter.

At the start of the second quarter junior running back Derril Thomas energized the Spartan's offense after a big run for a first down. A few plays later, senior running back Steven Field ran in for a touchdown giving Broad Run a 21-0.

Broad Run showed great defensive fortitude near the end of the first half, stopping Jefferson on four straight plays not far from the goal line. Following a penalty on Broad Run, the Spartan's stopped the Cougars once again on four straight plays, letting Jefferson gain no yards in the process. The Spartan's took a comfortable 21-0 lead into the locker room following the end of the first half.

At the start of the second half, Derril Thomas had yet another big run, scoring a touchdown with 9:28 on the clock in the third quarter extending Broad Run's lead to 28-0. A touchdown catch by senior tight end Eddie Barnes and a touchdown run by senior running back Dara Nget topped it off for Broad Run on the night giving them a 42-0 victory.

The Spartan's face what should be another easy opponent in the Wilson Tigers next Thursday night, but in two weeks begins as Broad Run faces off against the Park View Patriots in Sterling for what should be an exciting match-up between two rivals.

In the first half, Broad Run opened with a spirit-sapping 16-play, all-run 71-yard scoring drive that chewed up more than seven minutes. And in the second half, the Spartans opened by scoring twice on three snaps. Either way, they got to the end zone and the final result was a 42-21 win for Broad Run to open Dulles District play and extend the school’s winning streak to 33 games.

“Offense, defense, special teams ... you put a smile on my face,” first-year Broad Run coach Matt Griffis told his team after the dominating win on the road. The game wasn’t as close as the final score indicates as Broad Run (1-0, 5-0) led 42-7 in the contest before emptying their bench. Park View (0-1, 1-3) was held to just nine total yards rushing on 20 plays. “You have to bounce back. Keep your heads up,” Park View first-year coach Ferris Eways implored his players. Both teams face tough tests on the road next Friday with Broad Run at Ashburn neighbor Briar Woods (1-0, 3-2) and Park View going to Leesburg to take on Loudoun County (0-0, 2-2). The Spartans single wing attack amassed 385 total yards on 62 plays, including 275 yards on 55 carries. The Patriots were held to 138 yards on 37 plays.

Broad Run junior Derril Thomas rushed for 116 yards on 13 carries, including a 60-yard TD run on the second snap of the second half that basically put the game away by increasing the Spartans lead to 28-7. Another junior, Markas Anderson, rushed for 59 yards on 13 carries and caught a 45-yard touchdown pass from junior Michael Stratton, who tossed two scores while sharing time with junior Jack Sistare at quarterback. Starting QB, junior Connor Jessop, is out until at least the playoffs after a collarbone injury in the Sept. 3 win over Heritage. Stratton and Sistare combined for an efficient 5 of 7 for 110 yards. Park View got a pair of touchdowns late, including a 50-yard fumble return by senior Ben Pick. Junior Ryan McCarter, an all-district basketball player, caught two jump balls in the end zone, the first at the end of the first half with Broad Run up 21-0 and the second in the final minutes after the Patriots had blocked a Spartan punt in the Red Zone. After the Spartan defense, which has allowed a touchdown or less in three of the five games this season, forced a punt on Park View’s opening drive, the Broad Run offense went to work with Anderson and Thomas combining for 11 carries on the 16-play drive.

The biggest plays on the march were a pair of inside reverses to senior wingback Steven Fields which each netted 10 yards. Thomas finished the drive wtih a 1-yard plunge with 2:11 left in the first quarter. Junior Ryan Donnelly made the first of his six extra point tries. After forcing another Park View punt, the Spartans picked up with the run attack, reeling off seven straight runs to move the ball 37 yards to the PV 38. Stratton then came in and on Broad Run’s first pass attempt of the night he found Fields wide open down the right sidelines for the 38-yard score with 8:46 left in the first half. The Spartans defense ratcheted up the pressure and threw the Patriots for three losses on three plays, forcing Park View to punt from their own end zone. That gave BR great field position at the Park View 40 and nine plays later the Spartans were again in the end zone. This time it was freshman Da’Qwan Earl scoring from nine yards out. Earl is the brother of Broad Run graduate Breon Earl, who helped lead the Spartans to the first of the school’s back-to-back AA Division 4 state titles two years ago.

With just 2:01 left in the half and trailing 21-0, the Patriots showed some spark as junior quarterback Alec Dombkowski found junior Dante Absher for 18 yards to move the ball into Spartan territory. On 3rd-and-10 and running for his life from a heavy rush, Dombkowski reversed his field near the Patriot bench and ran all the way back across towards the Spartan bench before finding Pick uncovered and he went 33 yards to take the ball to the Spartan 4. A Broad Run pass interference penalty and then a Park View holding penalty left the ball at the 12 where Dombkowski hooked up with McCarter on a fade pattern in the back of the end zone with 18.8 seconds left in the half. Junior Wilfredo Avila’s extra point made it 21-7.

Any hope of Park View fighting back into the contest evaporated quickly in the third quarter as Thomas broke free on the second play for a 60-yard sprint to the end zone. On the next series, Park View couldn’t move the ball and facing 4th-and-16 from its own 41, the Pats tried an ill-advised fake punt which netted just three yards. Stratton then took the next snap and hit Anderson, who raced along the left sidelines for a score to make it 35-7 with 9:02 still left in the third quarter. The Spartans final touchdown drive was another long march, this time 11 plays for 63 yards that took more than five minutes. Sistare did a nice drive to keep the drive alive by drawing the Pats offside with a hard count on 4th-and-3 from the PV 20. Three plays later, on 3rd-and-2, senior Michel Nicholas exploited a seam in the defense and snuck into the end zone to make it 42-7 with 1:28 left in the third. The 35-point lead started a running clock. Park View moved into the Spartans end with Dombkowski making a nice 22-yard pass to senior Salman Gill but Fields ended the drive with an interception on the Spartan 16. Pick made a nice defensive play by scooping up a snap that hit the leg of a pulling lineman and quick-stepping 50 yards for a score with 4:36 left in the game. After a Spartan punt misfired in the Red Zone, McCarter caught his second TD pass of the night with 2:17 left to make the final score 42-21.

ASHBURN, VA- The Briar Woods Falcons (4-2) shocked the Broad Run Spartans (5-1) 20-13 in a four quarter thriller. Behind the efforts of freshmen quarterback Trace McSorley and defensive star senior Victor Rizzardi, the Falcons' were able to effectively balance a potent passing and running game as well as stop the Spartans' defensively to upset their Ashburn rival.

After Broad Run went three and out on their first possession, Briar Woods' quickly moved the ball up the field with direct snaps to junior Ryan Bumbray. Following a first down catch my senior wide receiver Scott Rollin, Bumbray took a direct snap into the endzone for a touchdown, giving the Falcons' a 7-0 lead early on.

After another quick three and out by the Spartans, Briar took over again and went straight to the air with two first down completions to sophomore Cam Serigne. After a Broad Run sack by senior Sean Magness, the Falcons' converted on a third and long, on a pass to senior tight end DeVontae O'Bannion. A few plays later, Scott Rollin waltzed his way into the endzone on a pass from Trace McSorley extending the Falcons' lead to 14-0.

Just as quickly as the Falcons' took the lead, the Spartans' responded with their own drive. On a big pass play from junior quarterback Jack Sistare, the Spartans' were granted a first and goal. A few plays later, on a fourth and goal just shy of the endzone, junior tailback Derril Thomas ran it in for a touchdown moving the Spartan's closer to the Falcons 14-7.

After trading possessions between the Spartans and the Falcons, Briar Woods went on one more drive before the end of the first half. After a first down pass to Cam Serigne and a first down run by Trace McSorley, junior kicker David Clements converted on a 40 yard field goal to give the Falcons' a 17-7 lead at the end of the first half.

At the start of the second half, senior defensive leader Joe Walter recovered a fumble deep in Briar Woods territory, giving the Spartan's great field position. Derril Thomas would later run in for his second touchdown of the night, bringing the Spartans' closer to Briar Woods, 17-13, following the missed extra point attempt.

After Broad Run came within four points of Briar Woods, the Falcons' would go on one of their most impressive drives of the night. Key third down conversions on passes to junior Alex Carter, who was a workhorse for the Falcons' most of the night, continually kept Briar Woods' drive alive. After being stopped short of the goal line on third down, the Falcons' had to settle for a field goal giving them a 20-13 lead that would hold up for the rest of the night. Broad Run's main offensive force, Derril Thomas, went down with an injury with 2:57 left in the third quarter on the kick-off following the Briar Woods field goal and did not return to the game. The Spartan's struggled to fill Thomas' absence the rest of the night and especially near the end of the game.

After a Broad Run punt, the Falcons' took over and quickly went to work with passes and direct snaps to Alex Carter. As the Falcons' chewed up the clock and moved the ball up the field, Sean Magness came up with a key interception for Broad Run giving the Spartans' new life. The Spartans' gradually trudged up the field with the use of direct snaps and a key 1st down completion by Jack Sistare on a roll-out to his right. After a few failed running plays, Broad Run was faced with a fourth down near mid-field. Junior Michael Stratton was intercepted following a failed Tim Tebow-like jump pass ending the Spartans' hopes for a comeback.

Following the interception, the Falcons' were able to run out the clock and preserve their victory with the Spartans' having no time- outs remaining.

Briar Woods proved they are a contender to win the Dulles District and a team to look out for in the future as they have many players returning next year.

Although Broad Run's 33 game win streak dating back to 2008 was ended, the Spartans' will look forward to proving themselves next week against as well as continuing to contend for a district and state title.

Oct. 9, 2010) - It was first quarter unlike any seen in recent memory in the Dulles District as Dominion and Broad Run traded blows and put up an amazing 42 combined points on the scoreboard.

The 21-21 tie translated into a 28-28 halftime deadlock and it was 35-35 after three quarters before the Spartans ball control put up two scores to win the game, 49-35.

Titan senior running back Deandre Reaves had 223 yards rushing and three scores on just 13 carries when he went out with an injury with the score 35-35 and the Titans with the ball with just under five minutes to play in the third quarter. When he finally returned with 1:41 to play, Dominion was down by 14.

Broad Run had its own injury concerns as Derril Thomas had rushed for 124 yards and two scores on 14 carries but he didn't return after his 7-yard score with 6:51 left in the third quarter.

Broad Run junior quarterback Michael Stratton, making his first varsity start, showed his comfort in the single wing offense, which he learned as a freshman at Stone Bridge -- where first year Broad Run coach Matt Griffis was the offensive coordinator -- and threw for 172 yards on 10 of 14 passing including a 24-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Taggart on Broad Run's first offensive snap of the game and a 14-yard touchdown pass to Mike Price on the Spartans last true offensive snap of the game.

Stratton also rushed for 49 yards on nine carries. Taggart scored three first-half touchdowns, three ways, as he caught the TD pass, ran a kickoff back 70 yards for a score and took a reverse 10 yards for six.

Dominion had two costly miscues in the game, a botched punt attempt on their first drive of the night which set up Broad Run's first quick score and then when the Titans were driving in the fourth quarter, down 42-35, they fumbled the ball at the Spartan 7 with 8:06. Broad Run, recovering at the 10, then drove 90 yards, draining more than six minutes off the clock to put the game away.

ASHBURN, VA - The Broad Run Spartans (7-1) rolled over the Freedom Eagles (3-4) 44-13 at Broad Run's Homecoming game Saturday afternoon. Broad Run was able to balance a potent running and passing game to easily cruise past the Eagles.

Freedom went three and out on their first possession after senior Joe Walter stopped the Eagles on 3rd and short. Broad Run quickly went to work with a big first down pass from junior Michael Stratton to junior Mike Price for a first down. The Spartans then went up 7-0 with a touchdown catch by junior Kevin Taggart from Stratton.

After Freedom went three and out again, junior Avery Campbell blocked a punt from junior Matt Malacane. Broad Run took over with good field position, but was unable to take advantage turning the ball over on 4th down. At the end of the first quarter Broad Run led 7-0.

At the start of the second quarter, Broad Run went right to work, scoring a touchdown on a direct snap from junior Derril Thomas. After the point after attempt was blocked, Broad Run led 13-0.

Following the Broad Run touchdown, Freedom went three and out yet again and was forced to punt. With the ball, Broad Run quickly picked up a first down on a run from Kevin Taggart. Michael Stratton threw his second touchdown pass of the night, on a long bomb to Mike Price. Following the failed two point conversion, the Spartans took the lead 19-0.

Freedom put together their first successful drive of the night, slowly moving the ball up the field. Freedom picked up a first down on a pass from Matt Malacane to Aiden Johnson. The Eagles then converted on a 4th down on a pass from Malacane to Chuck Thompson and added another first down on a run from Johnson. Freedom scored their first touchdown of the night, on a run by Malacane making the score 19-7.

Broad Run would not let the Freedom touchdown keep them down, as the Spartans went right back to work. Broad Run put together four first downs on their drive, beginning with a first down run by senior Steven Fields. Stratton then went on to throw for 3 first downs, two to junior Matt Preziotti and one to junior Markas Anderson. The Spartans then scored on a touchdown run on third down by Derril Thomas. Broad Run was able to convert on the two point conversion making the score 27-7 in favor of the Spartans which held up going into the half.

In the second half, the Spartans started with the football, and continued where they left off with a long pass from Michael Stratton to Mike Price. After failing to gain a first down, junior Ryan Ohneiser made the score 30-7 with a field goal. Freedom proved incapable to keep up with the Spartans the rest of the afternoon, as Broad Run looked energized the whole game with Homecoming that night. Broad added two more touchdowns on passes from Stratton to Mike Price and Steven Fields and went on to win 44-13. Freedom added a touchdown at the end of the game on a pass from Malacane to Patrick Donovan.

Freshman Da’Qwan Earl set the tone early for Broad Run, which ran its way to a 37-18 victory over host Loudoun County on a chilly Oct. 22 night in Leesburg. Earl returned the opening kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown, quickly silencing the Raiders’ student section, which was a little extra amped for the homecoming game. The victory keeps Broad Run (4-1 in the Dulles District, 8-1 overall) within a game of Briar Woods for the Dulles lead. County slipped to 1-3 in the district and 3-5 overall. The Raiders went three and out after Earl’s kickoff return, and the Spartans struck again with an 11-yard touchdown scamper by Kevin Taggart.

Despite jumping out to the early lead, Broad Run was never able to totally pull away from a feisty County squad. Two fumble recoveries and a 39-yard strike from Jake Lokey to Brad Szoka kept the Raiders within striking distance, trailing 21-6 at halftime. “Loudoun County is very disciplined and very well- coached. We knew this wouldn’t be easy. They’re a tough team,” Broad Run coach Matt Griffis said.

When asked if there was any focal point during the halftime discussion on how to finish the game off, Griffis’ response: “No, not really, no change needed. We just needed to keep doing what we were doing offensively and mixing up the coverage defensively.” And that they did. The second half was more of the same, as the Spartans continued to dominate the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. Broad Run racked up 258 rushing yards for the game, while County lost 25 yards on the ground. The Spartans’ defensive line found itself in the Raiders’ backfield on several occasions. Broad Run constantly pressured Lokey, sacking him eight times, as well as forcing him into an interception, which was returned 40 yards for a score by senior linebacker Joe Walter.

The Spartans amassed all 78 of their passing yards in the first half, opting to stick with their steady running game in the second half. The versatile Earl made his presence felt in more ways than just the return game. Earl rushed for 62 yards and a touchdown. Taggart finished with 74 yards and a touchdown, while Derril Thomas led the way with 102 yards, highlighted by an explosive 49-yard touchdown dash. Griffis was not shy about complimenting his offensive line, which allowed for such running success. “I thought the offensive line was excellent. They did a great job of getting a push all night long.”

Lokey, who guided the Raiders to a 27-21 overtime victory over Dominion on Oct. 15 in his first varsity start, finished with 257 yards passing. Lokey passed for two touchdowns – the second going to Garret Kranias on a spectacular one-handed grab – and also ran for a score.

(ASHBURN, VA) On a chilly Friday night, the Broad Run Spartans improved to 9-1 on the year with a 52-24 victory over the 1-8 Potomac Falls Panthers. The game was a little sloppy, with penalties often being committed by both sides, but the Spartans were able to pull away early on and hold onto the lead.

On Broad Run's first possession, the Spartan's went right to work picking up a first down on a completion from junior Michael Stratton to junior Caleb Lindsay. First down runs by junior Derril Thomas and senior Michel Nicholas helped advance the football just short of the Spartan's goal line. With 8:56 left in left in the first quarter, Thomas ran in for a touchdown giving the Spartan's an early 7-0 lead.

After Potomac Falls went three and out and was forced to punt on their first possession, Broad Run went right to work were they left off. Stratton went back to the air, completing a long pass to junior Blake Duncan to move the Spartans just short of the goal line. Thomas picked up his second touchdown of the night on a short touchdown run giving the Spartans a 15-0 lead following a Stratton run on the two-point conversion.

Potomac Falls went three and out once again on their next possession, but Broad Run could not do much better as they were forced to punt following bad penalties. Potomac Falls was able to move the ball for the first time on the night largely due to dumb penalties on defense by the Spartans but was forced to punt after reaching midfield. With the ball back in their possession, the Spartan's were able to move the ball effectively again on the ground. First down runs by Nicholas and Thomas helped Broad Run move the ball up the field but their drive was stopped short by a fumble. Despite halting the Spartan's drive, the Panther's could not capitalize on the shift of energy, being forced by the Broad Run defense to punt once again.

The Spartan's attacked the Panther defense on their next possession going to the air early on. Stratton completed a long pass to senior Kevin Varela and completed another pass to senior Eddie Barnes just short of the end zone. On the next play, Thomas went rushed for his third touchdown of the night from one yard, giving Broad Run a 21-0 lead after the missed extra point. Potomac Falls and Broad Run traded punts on their next two possessions resulting in Potomac Falls having the ball near the end of the half. After John Fischetti completed a long pass to Nicholas Fernandez, Michel Nicholas picked off Fischetti and returned it for a touchdown. The Spartans led 27-0 at half after the Nicholas interception and following a blocked extra point attempt.

The Panther's came energized coming out of the locker room at the start of the second half and went to work on offense utilizing the passing game. Fischeti connected with Fernandez on a long pass that put Potomac Falls within striking distance of the end zone. Fischetti then found Fernandez again to put the first points on the board for the Panthers, making the score 27-6 following the failed two-point conversion. Following a turn over on downs near midfield for Broad Run and a fumble by Potomac Falls, the Spartan's had the football once again in great field position. Derril Thomas added his fourth and final touchdown on the night on a run just short of the goal line to give Broad Run a 33-6 lead after the failed two-point conversion.

The Spartans lead would hold up for the rest of the game as they cruised to a 52-24 win on senior night for Broad Run. Michel Nicholas and Markas Anderson added two rushing touchdowns and the Spartan's recovered a Panther fumble in the end zone for a touchdown as well. Potomac Falls added touchdowns near the end of the game on a fumble recovery by Brandon Waggener and touchdown passes by Fischeti. The seniors on Broad Run have compiled a remarkable 37-1 record over the last 3 years and two state titles.

Next week Broad Run has a bye while they prepare for the regional playoffs and Potomac Falls hosts Loudoun County in the Panthers last game of the season.

Broad Run's Jessop returns to spark 49-26 quarterfinal win over Sherando By Matt Brooks Saturday, November 13, 2010

Matt Griffis entered his first season as head coach at Broad Run with a foolproof offensive game plan: The Spartans would pound the ball in the single wing and then, when the defense sold out to stop the run, they would spread five receivers out wide and let junior gunslinger Connor Jessop pick defenses apart.

But when Jessop went down with a broken collarbone on the first play of a Week 2 win over Heritage, Griffis lost his top playmaker, and the Spartans were forced to rely almost entirely on their rushing attack for the duration of the regular season.

Friday in a Region II Division 4 quarterfinal matchup with Sherando, Griffis and everyone in attendance saw what the Spartans had been missing as Jessop made his triumphant return. From a crisp 20-yard pass to Michael Price on Broad Run's first offensive snap to his seven- yard touchdown pass to Matt Preziotti, Jessop was perfect on his opening drive and for much of the first half, as the Spartans pounded the Warriors, 49-26, to take the first step in their title defense.

"It's a good way to come back, first game of the playoffs," Jessop said. "I don't think they expected us to run the five wide, and that helped. I think that was the biggest thing - the surprise."

Griffis called his quarterback's number repeatedly in the opening half, and Jessop responded, completing all six pass attempts on the Spartans' first drive and connecting on 21 of 26 first-half throws for 285 yards and three touchdowns. And to show he was willing to take a few hits, Jessop scampered in for a two-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter, as Broad Run built a 28-6 halftime lead.

"I wanted him comfortable back there, and I knew he was," Griffis said of his quarterback. "I wanted to see what he could do. "

After the break, Broad Run returned to the single-wing to chew up the clock and wear down the Warriors' defense. But a pair of fumbles let Sherando back into the contest briefly, when Jalen Brisco's three-yard touchdown pass to Dominique Porter cut the deficit to 28-13.

Still, the Spartans kept the ball on the ground, and three fourth-quarter touchdown runs - including two from leading rusher Derril Thomas - put the game out of reach with their most complete performance of the season.

Jessop finished 25 of 34 for 333 yards, and Thomas rushed for 97 yards on 18 carries. Defensively, the Spartans held down junior running back Joseph Ojo (15 carries, 101 yards) for much of the night and put the pressure on Brisco with dominant defensive line play and solid tackling in the secondary. Broad Run - which has not lost a postseason game since 2007 - will travel to top-seeded Louisa in a semifinal matchup Friday.

"This is what we do at Broad Run every year," junior defensive end Caleb Lindsey said. "This is basically when our season starts. This is what we've worked for the whole season, and we're ready to go."

Jessop Propels Broad Run Past Louisa By Sean Farrell | Email the author | November 20, 2010

The Louisa home crowd and Bubba the Lion did not disappoint. The stadium in Mineral, VA, was packed well before kickoff of Friday's Region II Division 4 semi-final game with Broad Run. Bubba was rolled out in his cage, gnawing on what used to be something's leg. When the Louisa Lions took the field for pregame introductions, the crowd cheered wildly, fireworks were launched and Bubba roared over the loudspeakers.

Then, the Spartans roared back.

Sparked by another near flawless performance by quarterback Connor Jessop, Broad Run quieted the crowd with an early 17-0 lead and held off the Lion's second- half comeback attempt to secure a 39-21 victory. The win sets up next Friday's highly anticipated rematch with crosstown rival Briar Woods, who snapped the Spartan's 33-game winning streak earlier this season.

After both teams traded sloppy opening possessions–perhaps due to nerves caused by the growling caged lion on the sidelines–the Spartans struck first when Jessop found wide receiver Michael Price down the left sideline for a 25-yard completion to the Lion's 1- yard line. On the next play, Derril Thomas rushed through a hole on the right side and scored the game's first touchdown late in the first quarter. "[Scoring first] was huge because as soon as you can take their crowd out of the mix, you're now playing on neutral territory." said Broad Run head coach Matt Griffis. "If we let them score first, or we struggle a great deal, then their fans get more and more excited and they get louder and louder and we let them factor in the game. We knew we had to come out and score quick."

After the Spartans' defense forced a three and out on Louisa's next possession, a 28-yard run by Da'Qwan Earl set the Spartans up with a first and goal at the Lion's 9-yard line. However, the drive stalled and the Spartans had to settle for a 27-yard field goal by Ryan Ohneiser. Facing an aggressive Lions' run defense, the Spartans vaunted single-wing rushing attack was held in check for most of the evening. However, Jessop's ability to counterattack with pinpoint-accurate, deep passes, often in third-down situations, proved to be the difference in the game. Jessop set up Thomas' next short yardage rushing touchdown after hitting Price for 33 yards down the middle. "In the single wing [Louisa] was bringing a lot of heat. They did a really good job up front against us and forced us to throw the ball some." said Griffis.

After Louisa pulled to within 10 on an Anthony Hunter 2-yard touchdown run, Jessop led two touchdown drives in the final 4:41 of the first half to essentially put the game out of reach. On third and nine from the Spartans' 35-yard line, Jessop rolled right, pumped and looked back left to find wide receiver Michael Stratton for 37 yards. After losing two yards on second down, Jessop found Price again, this time for a 30-yard touchdown strike. Price finished the day with three catches for 91 yards.

On Louisa's next drive, Derril Thomas intercepted a pass by the Lions, and the Spartans took over on offense with less than a minute left in the first half. Forced into another third and long situation from his own 48 yard line, Jessop found Stratton along the left sideline for a first down. Jessop then called his own number and rushed up the middle to the Lions' 14-yard line. After a timeout, and with only 16 seconds left on the clock, Jessop coolly rolled right, stopped and found Stratton on a slant pattern for another score. Following a succesful two point conversion, the Spartans entered halftime with a commanding 32-7 lead. Jessop finished the game completing 10 of 19 passs for 243 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. "Connor [Jessop], he's going to be playing Divison 1 [college football], we're going to be watching him play on Saturdays, maybe on Sundays. He's the real deal." said Louisa head coach Mark Fisher when asked about the play of the Spartan quarterback.

Despite giving up a touchdown to open the second half–after the Lions recovered an onside kick–the Spartan defense held strong most of the game and constantly harassed Louisa quarterback Kire' Worley. The Spartans were credited with four sacks on the evening, but would have likely racked up several more if Worley had not gotten away with spiking the ball at his feet to avoid being taken down by Broad Run defenders. The Spartans also intercepted the Lions twice, and held them to just 259 yards of total offense.

The Spartans now head to Brambleton to take on a Briar Woods team that advanced to the regional final by beating Liberty (Bealton) in a 7-0 defensive struggle. The rematch will have a new twist for both teams, as both Jessop and Briar Woods standout running back Michael Brownlee missed the earlier game due to injuries. The Spartans will have revenge in mind while the Falcons will be aiming to capture a first ever regional championship in front of their always rowdy home crowd. Gametime is currently scheduled for 7:00pm at Briar Woods. Stay tuned to Ashburn Patch sports for interviews, previews and predictions for the Brambleton Brawl–Round 2!

Briar Woods Wins Region Title Over Broad Run By Austin McLaughlin | Email the author | November 27, 2010

Earlier in the season, when the Briar Woods varsity football team defeated Broad Run, it snapped the Spartans' 33-game winning streak and the cross-town rivalry intensified. Friday night in Brambleton the two met again in a rematch for the ages, but it wasn't about winning streaks or bragging rights– instead a AA Region II Division 4 Title and a trip to the state semifinals was up for grabs.

The Briar Woods Falcons (11-2) took the lead at 21-14 early in the third quarter following a Trace McSorley 64-yard touchdown pass and never looked back. The Falcons played tremendous defense and the offense played with incredible poise, beating the Spartans 24-21 and winning a first-ever region championship.

The touchdown pass from McSorley early in the third quarter couldn't have come at a better time for the Falcons. Broad Run quarterback Connor Jessop led his team on a well-orchestrated drive to end the first half with a nicely thrown ball in the back of the end zone for a touchdown. The touchdown lifted the Spartans to 14- 13 lead over Briar Woods at halftime and seemingly shifted the momentum in favor of Broad Run.

Briar Woods Head Coach Charlie Pierce showed confidence in his freshman quarterback, putting the ball in the 15-year-old's hands to start the second half. McSorley showed the moxie of player beyond his years, leading an aerial assault down the field that resulted in a 64-yard touchdown strike to senior wide receiver Scott Rolin. McSorley completed a short 2-point conversion pass to make the score 21-14 with 10:58 left in the third quarter.

The Falcons added a field goal with 7:44 left in the 4th quarter after yet another long pass completion from McSorley. The young quarterback ended the night going 16 of 26 for 255 yards and two touchdowns.

Jessop missed the first game between these heated rivals, so he was as determined as anyone to pull out the victory. The junior quarterback took the field with seven minutes remaining in the game and down by ten points. To no surprise, Jessop marched his team down field and scored on a pass to bring his Spartans to within three points with four minutes remaining. Jessop finished the evening completing 21 of 26 passes for 274 yards and two touchdowns.

But Jessop wasn't the only senior stand out to miss the first meeting between these Ashburn foes. Michael Brownlee was out for most of the season recovering from a broken leg but has come back in recent weeks running like a man possessed. While Brownlee was contained for much of the contest (23 carries, 76 yards) the senior kept the clock running while picking up first downs late in the fourth quarter to put the game on ice.

Brownlee's most impressive run of the night came with 1:54 remaining in the game, when Briar Woods was up against a third-down play needing six yards for the first down. Brownlee got the hand off in the backfield, bounced off a tackler at the line of scrimmage, and spun off yet another tackler for additional yardage. The 8-yard run resulted in a first down and dashed the dreams of three straight State Championships for Broad Run (11-2).
