Achievement & Adjusbment of Jewish Moroccan Students Achievement & Adjusbment of Jewish MOroccan Students ABSTRACT TITLE: A Study of the Academie Achievement and Personal and Social Adjustment of Jewish Moroccan Immigrant Students in the English High Schools of Montreal DEGREE: Master of Arts DEPARTMENT: Education AUTHOR: Marvin Julian Godfrey The purpose of this paper is to determine how Moroccan-born and non-Moroccan-born Jewish high school students differ with regard to certain facets of their school life, particularly achievement, attitude and adjustment. A representative sample of fifty Moro~can-born students was selected and matched with a representative sample of non-Moroccan foreign-born Jewish students. Information was gathered through the examination of school records and through the administration of The School Inventory and the California Test of Personality. In each area, the difference between the scores of the two groups J .(' was tested for statistical significance. Additional data was collected through the medium of personal interviews with the students and their teachers. The results of the tests indicate that Moroccan and non- Moroccan Jewish students do not differ significantly in their attitude toward school or in their personal and social adjustment. However, the Moroccan students achieve poorer grades, appear to integrate more slowly, and experience behaviour problems. An attempt was made to provide an explanation for those aspects of their adaptation to the school environment in which Moroccan­ born pupils compare unfavourably with the other new Canadians. GODFREY Chapter l Introduction and Background to the Study No study of the Jewish-Moroccan community of Montreal can be made in a vacuum. In order to fully appreciate the position in which these North African émigrés now find themselves, one must have an understanding of events in Morocco over the past twenty years, the reasons for a considerable movement of Jews from Morocco to Canada, and the circumstances which account for the placing of almost aIl the French-speaking Moroccan children of school age in English-language schools. This chapter proposes to supply the reader with the necessary background information. A. History of Moroccan Jewry ( - 1948) Jewish colonists existed in North Africa even before the Christian era. The first wave of immigration reached Morocco two thousand years ago from Palestine and Rome. Most Moroccan Jews, however, trace their ancestry to the period of persecution in Iberia during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. The eventua1 expulsion of aIl Jews from Spain in 1492 and from Portugal in 1497 brought many thousands of fugitives to Morocco. A much smaller number of European Jews has come to settle in North Africa during the present century. In 1912 Morocco was divided into French and Spanish pro­ tectorates, the French zone being by far the larger and of more concern to the subjects of thls study. 2. At the time the protectorates were set up, Moroccan Jews were basically city dwellers. The majority of them filled the dirty, narrow mellahs or ghettos where they lived in crowded quarters. Several thousand Jewish families were considerably better off and inhabited the European sections of the larger urban areas. Included in this group were Many wealthy tradesmen. Under the protectorates a modern economy and an extensive administrative system were set up. The French brought security, improved health and educational

Reading these films together, I argue that Montreal Jewish artists and activists should be considered in relation to the complex local and inter- national politics of postcolonial dissent that marked the late 1960s and early 1970s, and that their experiences defy the narrow confines of a ‘third solitude.’ “Everybody, let’s get upstairs! Let’s take a stand now! Let’s go. EVERYBODY that be- lieves in justice take a stand. Don’t sit on your asses anymore. Move up there and take a stand!” Robert Hubsher uttered these words at Sir George Williams University (SGW) on 20 January 1969, passionately encouraging his peers to join the occupa- tion of the computer room on the ninth floor of the Hall Building in protest of the University administration’s failure to deal appropriately with accusations of racism toward a group of West Indian students from their professor Perry Anderson.1 Fea- tured as an interview subject in Mina Shum’s National Film Board (NFB) documen- tary Ninth Floor (2016), Hubsher explains that being Jewish, his early experiences of antisemitism were a factor in his decision to stand up and support his black peers experiencing racism.

If I had a nickel for every time I had to explain the legal aspects of Quebec’s for- mer school tax panels in a lecture on Jewish education, I would have – well, a lot of nickels. Small compensation, nevertheless, for the inevitable glassy looks I get from an audience more interested in hearing about the efforts of the province’s Jews to forge a place within the system through court action, political agitation and even strikes. Happily, with the appearance of David Fraser’s “Honorary Protestants”: The Jewish School Question in Montreal, 1867-1997, I can refer to a full legal history of the topic that is exhaustive in its attention to detail. The book is extensively researched and forcefully argued, outlining the passage of laws pertaining to Jewish education, the debates over their implementation, and their impact on human rights. It is also, despite the detail, lacking in historical context and frustratingly short on nuance. Take the quotation marks in the title, for instance. The phrase comes from my own work, A Meeting of the People: School Boards and Protestant Communities in Quebec, 1801- 1998 (McGill-Queen’s University Press, 2004), co-authored with Mary Anne Pou- tanen, and is the carefully chosen title of Chapter Seven, about the place of Jewish pupils under Protestant school boards. Learning of Fraser’s monograph, we were happy, as always, to see that part of our ambitious study had inspired more detailed research.

Received Jewish education from private tutors and at Talmud Torah. 1922-6 attended Baron Byng High School. 1926-30 attended McGill University, majoring in classics and political science and eco- nomics. Active in Debating Society with close friend David Lewis. Founded literary magazine, The McGilliad, with Lewis in 1930. Associated with 'Mon- treal Group' of poets and writers, including A.J.M. Smith, F.R. Scott, Leo Kennedy, and Leon Edel. Began publishing poems in The Menorah Journal, The Canadian Forum, Poetry (Chicago), and elsewhere. 1928—32 served as educational director of Canadian Young Judaea, a Zionist youth organization, and edited its monthly magazine, The judaean, in which many of his early poems and stories appeared. 1930-3 studied law at the Université de Montréal. !934 established law firm in partnership with Max Garmaise, and struggled to earn a living during the Depression. Montreal’s notoriety in the campaign against the disease came from having one of the highest mortality rates of large North American cities.1 An im- portant center for innovative medical research and training, Montreal was the site of pioneering developments in tuberculosis surgery, while at the same time maintaining strong links with the sanatorium movement. Montreal surgeon Edward Archibald, for instance, performed the first tho- racoplasty in North America in 1911 at the Royal Edward’s sister institu- tion, the Royal Victoria Hospital. Outspoken surgeon, inventor of modern surgical instruments, and tuberculosis activist Norman Bethune called Montreal his home from 1929 to 1936.2 Annmarie Adams is William C. Macdonald Professor of Architecture at McGill Univer- sity. Kevin Schwartzman is a researcher with the Respiratory Epidemiology and Clinical Research Unit at the Montreal Chest Institute (MCI) and Associate Professor of Medi- cine at McGill University. He is the recipient of a Chercheur-Boursier Clinician career award from the FRSQ (Fonds de la recherche en santé du Québec).
