While major changes are associated with such entrepreneurs, only a few studies has been done about the construction of the Pacific road in Acre and Peru, most of them related to environmental changes only. In this study, we have analyzed the perception of changes caused by the construction of the Pacific road (connecting Brazil, Peru and Bolivia to the Pacific Ocean) among the inhabitants of Assis Brasil (Brazil) and Iñapari (Peru). These are two neighboring cities in the border between Brazil and Peru. About 108 subjects were interviewed in both cities using a questionnaire with qualitative and quantitative questions, applied by Brazilian and Peruvian researchers in order to minimize cultural differences. Our study showed that for some topics, perception of changes fostered by the road varied between cities, while for other topics, similar opinion was prevailed. -

No Estado até o momento são 45.229 casos notificados, tendo sido 25.635 (56,7%) casos descartados, 18.783 (41,5%) confirmados e 811 (1,8%) seguem aguardando resultado de exame laboratorial por PCR no laboratório Mérieux e LACEN (Tabela 1). O Estado do Acre apresentou um aumento de 288 casos confirmados na fase clínica da doença (RT-PCR). Esse valor é adicionado ao número total de casos confirmados da doença. GETTING MORE ‘CARBON BANG’ FOR YOUR ‘BUCK’ IN ACRE STATE, BRAZIL1 Charles Palmer2, Luca Taschini3, Timothy Laing4 REVISED DRAFT – June 2017 ABSTRACT Acre State in Brazil is at the forefront of efforts to institutionalize jurisdictional-scale policies that aim to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+). Given limited REDD+ funds and uncertain returns from alternative land uses, this paper estimates the minimum incentive payment Acre’s government would have to pay forest landowners in each of its 22 municipalities to ensure forest conservation. Despite lower profits but with lower conversion costs and more stable returns over time relative to corn and coffee production, cattle pasture generates the highest returns in 19 municipalities. Municipalities are ranked according to their relative policy costs, a ranking which is compared to the distribution of forest carbon stocks across Acre. Finally, the relative cost per tonne of carbon is derived, which enables the identification of a group of 13 municipalities with the greatest potential for ‘carbon bang’ for a given ‘buck’. Fronteiras e identidades: os Manchineri e os Jaminawa na tríplice fronteira Brasil- Bolívia-Peru Rinaldo Sérgio Vieira Arruda Doutor em Ciências Sociais (Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo) Professor da Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo São Paulo, SP, Brasil [email protected] Resumo Este artigo versa sobre as vicissitudes dos povos hoje conhecidos como Manchineri e Jaminawa, habitantes das regiões fronteiriças do departamento de Pando, na Bolívia, de Madre de Dios, no Peru, e do estado do Acre, no Brasil. Procura traçar suas cone- xões e pertinências histórico-identitárias como povos de filiação linguístico-cultural Arawak e Pano, apontar o processo de seu envolvimento pela expansão das sociedades nacionais da Bolívia, do Peru e do Brasil, impulsionadas pela exploração da borracha na região, e, finalmente, mostrar como sua atual definição político-identitária e suas condições de vida foram conformadas por esses processos. Mas, ainda que conforma- dos por esse envolvimento e pelas normatizações dos Estados nacionais que repartiram seu território em fronteiras nacionais, impondo os marcos “legítimos” para a vida de seus habitantes, apontamos como intentam instrumentalizar esses parâmetros legais e socioculturais que procuram submetê-los. Upper Acre and Capixaba (formed by Capixaba, Xapuri, Epitaciolândia, Brasiléia and Assis Brasil) contain the axis of industrial expansion in Acre, connected with the infrastructure expansion Project, along the BR-317 highway (the Interoceanic road). The goal of this work is to trace the evolution of deforestation up to 2009 in the Upper Acre and Capixaba. PRODES provided the data used in this study. This paper quantified the total deforestation per year and stratification of deforestation poligones by size (< 3 ha; 3 < 10 ha; 10 < 60 ha; 60 < 100 ha; >100 ha). 2003 was the year of highest deforestation, followed by a progressive reduction until the present. There is a predominance of deforestation polygons between 3-10 ha and 10-60 ha, mainly in Brasileia and Xapuri, which contributed with 67% to the total regional deforestation. -

ORIGINAL ARTICLE http://dx.doi.org/10.1590/S1678-9946201759012 Epidemiological aspects of American cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL) in an endemic area of forest extractivist culture in western Brazilian Amazonia Andreia Fernandes Brilhante1, Leonardo Augusto Kohatsu Melchior2, Vânia Lúcia Brandão Nunes3, Cristiane de Oliveira Cardoso2, Eunice Aparecida Bianchi Galati1 ABSTRACT The study sought to analyze clinical and epidemiological aspects of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) in Xapuri, Acre, Brazil. Data from 2008 to 2014 registered in the notification records of the disease of the Information System of the Complaints of Notification (SINAN), and the data of the Information Department of the Unified Health System (DATASUS) available from 2007 to 2013 were used and analyzed in the light of the statistics of the temporal series by the Prais-Winsten method and chi-squared test. A total of 906 cases were registered with 60.2% occurring in men and 39.7% in women. The groups from 0 to 4 years of age (48.0%) and from 5 to 19 years of age (23.3%) were the most affected. Regarding the clinical forms, 77.7% presented CL and 22.3% mucocutaneous leishmaniasis (MCL). Among the 896 cases with information on the diagnostic methods used, Montenegro’s skin test predominated (66.4%), with a positive result of 95.8% for CL and 99.3% for MCL. Treatment with N-methylglucamine antimony was performed in 99.4% of the cases, but discontinuously used in the majority of patients. This study presents information which may be used as a tool for the epidemiological surveillance and control of the disease in Xapuri, a region which depends essentially on forest resources and ecological tourism. -

Rural communities are important stewards of forests that provide valuable ecological services. This makes them vital allies to outside organizations seeking to support conservation and development initiatives. However, rural communities also have priorities and needs that may not align with the goals of conservation and development projects. This makes effective engagement of communities by outside organizations an important challenge. When rural communities lose traditional livelihood options, they prioritize economic benefits as a condition for participating in projects, and they exhibit “project fatigue” when many projects are imposed on their time. We reflect on our experience in seeking to align the goals of a conservation and development project with community priorities in the Chico Mendes Extractive Reserve in Acre, Brazil. Our project featured capacity building for monitoring forest health to foster participation in payments for ecosystem services programs. -
