Gants Recognizing Justice Hines Supreme Judicial Court Seven Justice Courtroom John Adams Courthouse Boston, MA May 4, 2017 Supreme Judicial Court Chief Justice Ralph D. Gants made special remarks prior to oral arguments on May 4, 2017, recognizing retiring Supreme Judicial Court Justice Geraldine S. Hines. Justice Hines: When Justice Geraldine Hines was nominated to serve on the Supreme Judicial Court, she pledged to Governor Deval Patrick, "I will labor with every fiber of my being to validate your trust in my ability to be a wise and fair judge of every issue that comes before the court." I can attest, as can every other Justice who has sat with you these past three years, that you have been true to that pledge. You have brought to this court not only your abundant wisdom and fairness, but also your passion for the truth, your enormous capacity to listen (not only to what is said but to what has remained unsaid), your uncommon good sense, your grace, your humor, and your courage. You have patience for all but the pompous. And unsparingly, you speak truth to power. You have been speaking truth to power since you were a small girl growing up in the segregated South, the oldest of ten children, living on the edge of poverty in the heart of Jim Crow. At the age of sixteen, inspired by a mother who, in your words, "prayed without ceasing," you enrolled in Tougaloo College in Jackson, Mississippi. Upon graduation in 1968, you enrolled in the University of Wisconsin Law School, where you joined the Black Student Alliance's efforts to create a black studies department and recruit more black faculty and students. -

House by House, Block by Block: The Rebirth of America’s Urban Neighborhoods ALEXANDER VON HOFFMAN OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS BOSTON AND THE POWER OF COLLABORATION In 1971, Bob Haas, a twenty-seven-year-old engineer and classical piano player, moved to a commune in a large broken-down Victorian house in a section of the Boston Dorchester district known as Upham's Corner. Haas loved the his tory and vitality of Dorchester—a streetcar-era place where first the Irish and then other ethnic groups had made their home in “Baahston”—and a few years later bought the old house from his roommates. Upham's Corner, however, was a neighborhood in crisis. M any poor Afri can Americans and Puerto Ricans lived there. Houses caught on fire and were abandoned. Stores, including the neighborhood supermarket, closed. During his first ten years in Upham's Corner, Haas's house was burglarized twenty- three times. Children on his street grew up, joined gangs, took crack cocaine, and murdered or were murdered. At first Haas naively thought that if he repaired his house, others would do the same, and the neighborhood would come back. When that did not work, he organized a neighborhood association. That did not stem the tide either, and in 1979 he and members of three neighborhood associations founded the Dorchester Bay Economic Development Corporation (Dorchester Bay EDC). Excited by its potential, Haas in 1985 gave up his other careers to become a full-time staff member and spent sixteen years as director of planning. It took a few years, but this last effort began to show tangible results. -

Thank you so much for joining us. I'm Gihan Fernando. I'm the Assistant Dean for Career Services at Georgetown Law. This is, I believe, the panel that is a little bit more career and job focused directly. But we will have elements, as we talk about things, about the state of the law, building on the prior panel, and then some of the practicalities and difficulties that students and attorneys with disabilities face in the marketplace. We will have, I hope, significant time for your questions about the particular situations you face as you counsel students or if you're students yourself. I know that there are students in the audience that have faced challenges going through the job search. Before we get started with the panel, I have a couple of announcements and shameless plugs. (Laughter) GIHAN FERNANDO: At Georgetown Law, we are one of the co- hosting schools for the Impact Job Fair. How many of you are not familiar with the Impact Job Fair? Oh good. This is good. The word is getting out. Impact is, I believe, one of the very few, if not the only, job fairs that is designed specifically for lawyers and law students with disabilities. Access to Justice Fellow Project 2017-2018 PREFACE In his Access to Justice Fellowship with the Equal Justice Coalition, John Carroll interviewed leadership, staff, and other stakeholders in the Massachusetts legal services community. From these interviews, and using other historical resources, John authored the collection of narratives in this document, tracing the origins of civil legal aid in Massachusetts and detailing the vital services provided by the 14 programs funded by the Massachusetts Legal Assistance Corporation (a co-founding member of the EJC). These narratives will be translated into a variety of formats (articles, blog posts, fact sheets) for the EJC, MLAC, and civil legal aid programs to use in outreach, legislative advocacy, and other educational efforts. * Client names in this document have been changed to protect individual privacy. DEDICATION This project is dedicated to the men and women who work in, and have worked in the legal services programs described here. This year marks the 35th anniversary of MLAC’s existence. Will Brownsberger Katie Lannan7/27/20 7:05 PM JULY 27, 2020.....Three senators who helped craft their branch's policing bill will join the Judiciary Committee's House chair, the head of the Massachusetts Black and Latino Legislative Caucus and a former state trooper on a conference committee that will try to reach a House-Senate compromise on police reform. Each branch named its negotiators on Monday. On the Senate side, it's Democrats Sen. William Brownsberger of Belmont and Sen. Sonia Chang-Diaz of Jamaica Plain, and Minority Leader Bruce Tarr, a Gloucester Republican. The House appointed Rep. Claire Cronin, an Easton Democrat who as co-chair of the Judiciary Committee led the House's effort to compile a police reform bill; Springfield Democrat Rep. Carlos Gonzalez, who chairs the Black and Latino Legislative Caucus, and Rep. Timothy Whelan, a Brewster Republican who voted against the bill. Chang-Diaz, the sole member of the Black and Latino Caucus in the Senate, and Brownsberger chaired the working group that developed the Senate's bill. Tarr was the only Republican on that panel. 1/4 Brownsberger and Cronin played leading roles in negotiations on a criminal justice reform package. Those talks lasted for 113 days. The police reform conferees have a much tighter timeline -- Friday marks the last day of formal legislative sessions for the two-year term, though there is a possibility that lawmakers could agree to work beyond that deadline because of the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic.
