As we continue to foster membership growth, the club will be able to make more improvements to our facilities and otherwise. With this increased activity, please be aware that bumping may be more prevalent. For rules about bumping, please check the Club Rules at pbtennis.com/Rules. To minimize bumping, be sure to check the Court Calendar for courts that are reserved by Leagues and Instruction at pbtennis.com/Calendar. Note that on Saturdays between 11:30 am and 12:00 pm there is currently only one court available. If you would like to play around this time, please try to schedule matches to end around 11:30 am or start after 12:00 pm. San Diego Tennis Announcements American Sachia Vickery and Former US Open Semifinalist Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium Headline $25,000 Shoebacca Women’s Open Player Field “We have an outstanding international player field for this year’s Shoebacca Women’s Open. With so many competitors from across the world, it’s going to be a great week of women’s professional tennis,” said Tournament Director Sue Whiteside. “We invite fans to come to Morgan Run Club & Resort and enjoy the matches all week as we celebrate the tournament’s 10th anniversary.” Qualifying matches begin on Sunday, February 23 with Main Draw Singles and Doubles matches getting underway on Monday, February 24. The tournament concludes Saturday, February 29 with the Women’s Singles and Doubles Championships. Admission for spectators and on-site parking will be free each day. 131st Annual Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Tennis Championship Returns to La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club March 6-8, 2020 The second-oldest tennis event in the US will feature many of the country’s best NCAA Men's college teams. Also expected to compete in this tournament are top teaching pros, promising juniors, college coaches and former tour players, making this one of the most interesting and unusual competitor fields in the country. La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club welcomes tennis spectators to view the tournament with free admission. On-site parking is available for a nominal fee. World Team Tennis Sets 2020 Schedule; Nine Teams Including New Chicago Franchise To Compete In 63 Regular-Season Matches July 12-30. “After what was undoubtedly the league’s most successful season by many metrics, World Team Tennis continues its positive growth in 2020 with additional expansion for our 45th season,” WTT CEO Carlos Silva said. “In announcing our season schedule, as well as player signings, earlier than in past years, there is an entirely new groundswell of excitement from fans of our nine teams, and for team tennis as a whole, during this time of year.” The 2020 WTT season will see a SoCal rivalry renew on opening night July 12 as the Orange County Breakers, led by Maria Sharapova and Steve Johnson, drive down I-5 to play the San Diego Aviators, led by Ryan Harrison, at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif. The teams reverse course the next night, July 13, and compete at Breakers Stadium in Newport Beach, Calif. The Breakers beat the Aviators in the 2017 WTT Final a year after the Aviators downed the Breakers in the 2016 WTT Final. I am Jane Meyers, and today I will be recording the oral history of John Martin, eminent alumnus of San Diego State University, Class of 1960. This oral history for the SDSU Special Collections and University Archives is funded by the Jane and John Adams Humanities Grant. John was born in New York City, grew up in San Diego, and graduated from Saint Augustin High School. While at San Diego State, he majored in journalism, became a reporter for The Aztec, and then the managing editor. After graduating, he served in the Army, where he worked at night as copy editor for The Augusta Chronicle; then reporter for the Army publication, Rome [phonetic] Interview, and became editor of the Army weekly, The Jayhawk. During his time in the Army, he reported on the Kennedy assassination in 1963. After John completed his military service, he worked in Paris for The New York Times, and in Spain where he wrote a travel guide. Returning to the United States, John worked from 1966 to 1975 as a correspondent for KRCA News in Sacramento. From 1975 until 2002, he worked for ABC News, where he soon showed his reporting and writing expertise as a national and international correspondent, working with David Brinkley, Ted Koppel, and Peter Jennings. In 1983 he successfully uncovered the story of notorious Nazi fugitive, Klaus Barbie. League Champion d. Coin Flip In a tie breaker for tournament seeding, every game played including exclusion games, but excluding endowment games are counted. Note: If a tie involves multiple teams (more than 2) and a team is eliminated, the procedure starts over at step one with the remaining teams. B. Pairing Announcements/Scheduling 1. Pairings and tournament information will be available on the MIAA website, www.miaa.net, throughout the tournament. 2. The number of and equity in “rest” days is not a tournament scheduling criteria. C. Site Determination and Tournament Sites 1. All matches throughout the tournament will be hosted by the higher seeded team, providing the site meets suitable quality standards. The tie-breaking procedure above, will be used to determine the host, if in the state tournament, teams seeded the same will be playing each other. If the higher seed cannot host, the TMC Site Determination Policy will be used: • Home school AD finds an acceptable site • Lower seed will host the match • If both sites are not acceptable, the Tournament Director will place the match at an acceptable site within MIAA site policy guidelines.
