Little Rock, ARK, September 27, 2018 - The Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, Philip Mann, Music Director and Conductor, announces a presentation of The Music of Star Wars, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, October 20th and 3:00 p.m. Sunday, October 21st at the Robinson Center. The concert will feature music selected from the entire series of 10 feature films, an animated film, three TV films, and six animated series spanning more than 40 years. The celebrated film composer John Williams (Star Wars, Jaws, Indiana Jones, Harry Potter), composed all music from the eight saga films (Williams is also slated to score the ninth and final film), with award-winners Michael Giacchino and John Powell composing the music for the spin-off films. The program will feature costumes, trivia, and decoration of the Robinson Center to create a multi- sensory experience. Audiences are invited attend this family-friendly event in costume as their favorite character. A random Star Wars-themed prize winner will be selected from costumed attendees at each performance. Film music serves many different purposes including: 1. To create or enhance a mood 2. To function as a LEITMOTIF 3. To link one scene to another providing continuity 4. To emphasise a gesture (known as MICKEY-MOUSING) 5. To give added commercial impetus 6. To provide unexpected juxtaposition or to provide irony 7. To illustrate geographic location or historical period 8. To influence the pacing of a scene 1. To create or enhance a mood Music aids (and is sometimes essential to effect) the suspension of our disbelief: film attempts to convince us that what we are seeing is really happening and music can help break down any resistance we might have. It can also comment directly on the film, telling us how to respond to the action. Music can also enhance a dramatic effect: the appearance of a monster in a horror film, for example, rarely occurs without a thunderous chord! Sound effects (like explosions and gunfire) can be incorporated into the film soundtrack to create a feeling of action and emotion, particularly in war films.

Fast-forward to the lightsaber battle between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Maul near the end and watch it. Now that you have your fill of excitement, rewind the battle and watch it again, but this time, mute your television or speakers. Does it seem different? Is the scene not quite as exciting? Perhaps it's because you're missing the sounds of the lightsabers clashing or the combatants' footsteps. That's definitely part of it, but what really makes this particular scene stand out is the music. Musical soundtracks play a key role in the way that we perceive movies, and music can enhance the atmosphere and add to the enjoyment of our games as well. To best determine what music to use throughout the game, you need a basic idea of how music works with film to create a spectacular cinematic experience. You do not need to be a musicologist or any kind of musical expert to put together a soundtrack. As long as you have watched any of the Star Wars movies, you have a good starting knowledge. If you listen to any movie soundtrack, whether it's from Star Wars, The Godfather , or even Braveheart , basic themes can be heard throughout the entire score. These themes connect with a particular character, location, or event in the story and may appear multiple times throughout the movie.

The Golden Compass, Composer Alexandre Desplat Has Opened up New Musical Doors to His Style
By Rudy Koppl From musical flights of fantasy to a maze of clever themes throughout the magic of The Golden Compass, composer Alexandre Desplat has opened up new musical doors to his style. Through brilliant sonic depictions of vast artic landscapes, the epic battle of behemoths, as two polar bears fight to the death, and a multitude of characters from other worlds, this is the first epic fantasy extravaganza Desplat has penned in his career. It’s been more than twenty years as Alexandre remembers, “I had a dream when I was a kid to one day score a big fantasy adventure movie in Hollywood like Star Wars or Alien, films with large epic scores that I admire by Williams, Goldsmith, Jarre, like in Lawrence from Arabia, and Bernard Herrmann’s Jason and the Argonauts, The Day the Earth Stood Still, and Fahrenheit 451. I knew this would be a huge amount of work because it’s a trilogy. You have to imagine the complete story so my music can match it from beginning to end. The characters are changing a lot through the story in the three books, so that’s the challenge.” Scoring his dream come true was no easy feat for Desplat. From the very onslaught of the film scoring process, it was the construction of a vision in transit. Director Chris Weitz was completely consumed by the amount of special effects that were totally necessary to make this adult fairy tale come true, so his task for the composer was overwhelming, “We tortured him by changing around the cut multiple times, even up until the last possible days; we kept the visual side of the cut open.
