REFLECTING WITH THE PASTOR

St. Susanna MAY 15, 2016

616 Reading Road Becoming community…Becoming “Team ” Mason, Ohio 45040 Hearing and reading the Scripture passages for the Feast of Pentecost some might think this is the church’s Fourth of July celebration. There is Parish Office Hours fire, excitement, and a powerful message everyone heard. But instead Monday - Friday: of all this commotion leading to confusion, everybody understood what was communicated. If anything they were confused by the fact of clear 8:30am - 4:30pm communication. Pentecost was a big deal then…it is a big deal now! Pentecost is all about the Holy Spirit that is ready to lead us and strengthen us to take our 1st Sunday of the Month: place in the community of believers…take our proper position on Team Christ! 8:15am - 12:30pm The gifts of the Spirit: wisdom, understanding, counsel, knowledge, fortitude, piety and fear of the Lord (wonder) are no less needed and present today as they were 2,000 years ago. The miracle is that the more we get involved as Phone: 513-398-3821 integral/necessary parts of the church community, the more our individual Parish Office: ext. 3100 gifts are brought out in service to others. The more we live for others and not School Office: ext. 3108 ourselves, the more we are blessed and come to a deeper understanding of the gift we are. The more we understand our particular call from God, the more After Hours Emergency: ext. 3200 we will understand and cherish being part of the whole body of Christ. The Fax: 513-398-2254 more we use our gifts to build up the Team, the community of St. Susanna… the more we learn and live non-competitive cooperation… the more the can be understood in every time and culture.

The Feast of Pentecost is meant to be a blowout celebration that reminds us of the power we have been given by God, by , to create a community of solidarity, life, love and respect for all. The gospel can be understood in every time and culture because it fulfills the deepest yearning of human hearts. With all our differences, Pentecost tells us we are all connected to one another…. that what we do for one another, we do for Jesus. To the extent we believe that, the more it will become true. The very presence of Jesus was an antidote to the fear and shame the first disciples faced. The presence of Jesus, His love, His grace, His peace and His mercy … through us will transform the world. Celebrate your gifts…share your gifts… remain an important part of “Team Christ”. St. Susanna, the Church, the World… God… needs you!

WORSHIPPING WELL! THE GATHERING RITE PART III

Is our gathering together important because we are like a club or a group of intimate friends getting together? We are not like that at all. Almost the opposite. Here we welcome people who would probably never be our friends. What we have in common is far more than blood, far more than the mutual affection of friends. What we have in common is baptism in Christ. That’s it. That’s all that matters here. That’s why rich and poor should be sitting side by side. Every barrier society erects to keep us apart is worthless here. Every bond society builds up to put us into this little group or that clan or the other club is also worthless here. In a sense, we are naked here, like a baby in the waters of baptism. All the externals are gone. All that we wear is Christ. We all wear Christ. And that — not simply that we might like one another — is why we come forward and ring this altar round. That is the preparation for Mass.

Such preparation goes a step further when we begin the gathering rites or entrance rites. Please don’t think that “entrance rites” means the entrance of the priest who presides at the liturgy and the other ministers. It means the entrance of all of us together into the liturgy. Some may be in the ritual procession, but in reality we are all in procession, all moving into our liturgy. All the words and song and gesture are ways to get from where we are to where we want to be: a church ready to hear God’s word. We get there with song and procession and the sign of the cross and prayer, and sometimes with sprinkled water or penitential prayers and the Gloria. At their best, these are things we all know how to do and do them fully and with a sense that here, in making the sign of the cross, in singing out loudly, in saying familiar words, here we are really at home, in our element, one with brothers and sisters making up the church

A JOURNEY FROM MOURNING TO JOY

St. Susanna is offering a grief support group for parishioners and our neighbors who have lost someone they loved through death. If you or someone you know might benefit from a grief support group, please plan on joining us for a 13 week journey. After the funeral when the cards and flowers have stopped coming, most of the people around you return to their normal lives. But your grief continues and you feel alone. Grief Share is a group led by caring people who have experienced grief and have rebuilt their lives. The program is non-denominational and features biblical concepts for healing from grief. It includes a video seminar, support group and workbook for personal reflection and growth. Some of the topics are: Is this normal? Challenges of grief; Guilt and Anger; Stuck? Each session is self-contained so don’t worry if you miss one or can’t make every session.

Grief Share will meet on Tuesday evenings beginning at 7:00 p.m. from May 24 – August 16. Please join us in the St. Isidore Room in the Church undercroft. The cost of the workbook is $15.00. If you can cover this cost, it would be greatly appreciated. If this is not possible, please don’t worry. Come and join us anyway. It would be helpful to register beforehand to assure we have enough workbooks. Please feel free to contact Fr. Bob Farrell, ext. 3101or [email protected] if you have any questions or concerns. May God bless you and grant eternal rest to those we love.
