The last time I awoke screaming in terror and stinking of fear from a haunting Nightmare, was when (as you may recall) my evil side paid me an unwelcome late-night visit. Since then, things have been pretty calm. Then the Pandemic hits and resulting self-isolation’s. Stressed and alone for long stretches at a time is it any wonder one’s emotional mind slowly begins to unravel. Perceptions blur, thinking and overthinking, worries and fears, memories start to get tangled and before you know it — The Nightmares Return! ONE NIGHT NOT LONG AGO… Exhausted, I lay in bed, hands interlaced behind my head my mind racing in all kinds of crazy directions. After all, It was a very trying day. My old childhood friend was dying and not long for this world. In fact, a phone call could come at any moment. Edward Ray, or “Einstein” as we came to call him because of his long unruly mop and natural smarts was an unlikely member of our old childhood band of brothers. Neither athletic nor outwardly adventurous he was in fact the exact opposite. Nerdy, awkward, and with a brain the size of a mountain. Perhaps this, part of the reason he became so endearing to the rest of us. More than a friend he was a brother, going on now nigh 45 years or so. And now he was dying… As if spotlighted from above, a circle of white light illuminates the bed on which our dying friend lays. The circle of light extended beyond, just enough to encompass his childhood friends now gathered around him. Beyond them, an inky black darkness enveloped the rest of the room. Nothing else was visible… You could hear the soft whispering of machinery, the quiet whoosh of expanding air, the faint beep of his digital heartbeat but you could not see from where these sounds were coming from. Behind, beyond the circled light, there was nothing. Nothing but an eerie and final darkness. We were all there — Johnny-B, Petey Walker, Big Mack and myself all gathered around our dying friend as he lay hopelessly fighting for his life. Right down, as nature demands it, to his last mortal dying breath. “Let him go” I said to no one in particular “Please end his suffering.” The boys that gathered round his hospital bed (if that is where we were?) whispered together in agreement; Amen. But Einstein, against all odds, continued to hang on. In fact, it looked like he was struggling to try and say something. Yet… looking down upon his frail cancer-ridden, emaciated body, was almost too much to endure. To say that just a mere shell of his former self remained of our old friend was delusional. For Einstein, in his current state, was for the most part, unrecognizable. His eyes sunken deep down into his now skintight bony skull. Above the covers, his arms like brittle twigs lay useless at his sides and his color — his color was that of yellow death. No, this was not just a former shell of our childhood friend; It was a human skeleton of malnutrition, a dying hallowed-eyed imposter. It was an extreme example of the horrors endured by a man in the last stages of terminal cancer. It was the very definition, of hopeless heartbreak. I took his frail bony hand in mine and lowered my ear, close to his mouth. “Tell them” he whispered almost silently. “Tell them” he tried again “I love them — Love them all.” With tears spilling freely I looked up at the boys gathered round and solemnly gave them Einstein’s final message. Final because, that was his final dying breath. Once his lungs expelled the air needed to whisper these last haunting words — they never again renewed their fill — Einstein had passed on. This scene, as in a dream, starts changing. Now the circle of light is shrinking. No longer can I see my friends gathered round. They too are in the darkness if there at all, anymore. On my knees beside his death bed, my head face-down in my hands, I’m sobbing. Sobbing for the loss of my friend. Sobbing for the way he had to die. Sobbing for his family. Sobbing for the anguish of it all. And now the circle of light is contracting once more. Now I too am disappearing into its oncoming darkness. “Goodbye old friend, we all loved you too” I said out loud, as the blackness around me now almost complete. Just as I was thinking this now must be over. Surely this nightmare is finally coming to an end… A bony frail hand shot out from the bed — and grabbed me by the wrist! Vice-like in its grip, and deathly cold, It drew me quickly and effortlessly back into the circled light and into the horror that awaited. Einstein’s dead body was sitting up on the bed and grinning. Pulling me closer and closer into its evil presence Its sunken dead eyes filmed over in a mucus grey and rolling wild in their sockets. Most of its sick dirty hair was left on the pillow, and what was left on him hung in long thin patch’s falling down across his grinning face. The stink of death was everywhere. It surrounded him like a death shroud and as he pulled me ever closer, my eyes wide in terror, my mouth opening wide to voice a horrifying scream… I awoke in the dark of night screaming… Screaming freely and out loud in horror. Brandy (my cat) jumped off the bed and went fleeing in terror out of the room. His sudden movement sent my consciousness reeling towards grey and I almost passed out. “Stupid Fucking Cat” I shouted after it. “You know you’re not allowed in here!” My heart like a jackhammer was thudding in my chest. “I’ve had it with these bloody nightmares! I can’t take this anymore!” I roared out loud to no one. With trembling hand I reached over to the lamp and turned it on. The digital bed-side clock said it was 4:13 am and seeing as sleep was cancelled for the rest of the night — I got my frightened sorry ass out of bed and on unsteady legs, headed for the bathroom. It was there at the sink. While cupping the warm running water and splashing it on my tired old face that I first noticed. I froze in mid splash, the water trickling uselessly through my fingers and into the sink below. My hands still cupped though now empty below my haggard image — and in the mirror, I could see on my left forearm (just below the wrist)— an angry bruising welt? As I slowly turned it over in wonder I could see in the mirror that it extended more than halfway around my forearm. Almost like… Carolina Governor Shortens T erms For. Wilmington 10 in Firebombing. RALEIGH, N.C., Jan. 23—Gov. James B. Hunt Jr., hoping to skirt a political minefield in his home state and pointedly rejecting the criticism of “those from outside,” affirmed his belief tonight in the guilt of the Wilmington 10, but reduced their sentences to make them eligible tor parole over periods ranging from four months to two years. The decision to opt for early parole rather than the pardon of innocence that was demanded by supporters of the 10 brought immediate angry restonse; from those supporters. In a statement issued in New York, the Rev. Dr. Avery D. Post, president of the 1.8 million‐member United Church, of Christ, expressed “shock, pain and disappointment” at the decision and vowed to continue efforts to prove ‘the innocence of the defendants. The Governor's decision meant that the Rev. Ben Chavis, who has served nearly three years in prison and in jails awaiting appeals, will be eligible for parole Jan. 1, 1980. Mr. Chavis, director of the Washington office of the church's Commission on Racial Justice, was originally sentenced to 25 to 29 years in the burning of a Wilmington, N.C., grocery store in 1971 and related charge of conspiracy to fire at policemen and firemen responding to the blaze. The Governor reduced that sentence to 17. to 21 years, and Mr. Chavii will I be eligible for parole after serving one fourth of the minimum. The remaining defendants, whose sentences were cut by about one‐third, will be eligible for parole, which the Governor emphasized was not automatic and is strictly supervised, at times varying from June 1 to Oct. 27 of this year. In a prime‐time televised address to North Carolinians in which he took generally tough tone, but which was leavened by a call for for what he indicated were fairer sentences, the Governor said: “From all that I have learned in reviewing this case, I have concluded that there was a fair trial, the jury made the right decision and the appellate courts reviewed it properly and ruled correctly.” Accordingly, the Governor said emphatically, “I cannot and will not pardon these defendants.” However, after reviewing the laws under which the 10 were convicted, firebombing an unoccupied building and conspiracy to assault policemen and firemen by shooting at them, Mr. Hunt said, “I have concluded that the sentences of these men in prison, which range from a minimum of 20 to 25 years, are too long.” He reduced the minimum sentences to a range of from 13 years to the ,17 for Mr. Chavis. The lone white and the only woman among the 10, Ann Sheppard Turner, was originally sentenced to 7 to 10 years for advocating but not participating in the arson. She was paroled a year ago. The nine imprisoned men are Mr. Chavis, 30 years old; Marvin Patrick, 25; Connie Tindall, 27; Jerry Jacobs, 25; Willie Earl Vereen, 24; James McCoy, 25; Reginald Epps, 24; Wayne Moore, 25, and William Wright, 25. State Senator William Smith, an lawyer who represents Wilmington in the Legis- lature, was generally supportive or Governor Hunt's decision. “I might have reduced the sentences a bit more,” said Mr. Smith, a Democrat. “They were excessive. But I think the broad majority of North Carolinians will agree with: the Governor's decision,” he said. In Durham, United States Attorney H. M. Michaux, who, before his appointment, was considered one of the chief black political supporters of Governor Hunt, said that he felt “very much let down” by the GoVenior's decision. “He's shown his true colors this time,’ said Mr. Michaux, a,former state legislator. “rthink he's completely wrong when he says the people got a fair trial.” The case, described as “a political nightmare” in the state, has attracted national and international attention, and has been acknowledged by the State Department as causing “serious problems” for President Carter's international campaign for human rights. The press of the Soviet Union and other Communist nations has cited the Wilmington 10 as an example of United States hypocrisy. Amnesty International, the human rights organization that was awarded the 1977 Nobel Peace Prize, lists the defendants among those it described as “prisoners of conscience” similar to political prisoners. Although the immediate reaction here appeared to be generally muted, the Rev. Charles E. Cobb, the executive director of the Commission for Racial Justice for the United Church of Christ, said in •a telephone interview from New York that the Governor's decision could propel black supporters into the streets In mass demonstrations. He said he believed that “Governor Hunt has knowingly joined the long list” of conspirators to convict and keep incarcerated the Wilmington 10” and accused him of “playing political games with the lives of these young men.” Governor Hunt, who is 40 years old and regarded as a moderate Democrat, was elected in 1976 with 60 percent of the vote. In 1977, he successfully sponsored passage of a constitutional amendment .permitting North Carolina Governors, including himself, to run for a sec‐. and successive term. Members of Mr. Hunt's staff have indicated that the Governor has national aspirations. The 10 were convicted of arson and conspiracy in connection with the burning of a white‐owned grocery store on Feb. 6, 1971. The store, Mike's Grocery, was firebombed at the end of a week of racial violence that left two people dead. Chrissie's Nightmare by D. Wayne Moore. Published: 15:22 BST, 29 October 2015 | Updated: 15:58 BST, 29 October 2015. Bobby Wayne Moore, 39, of Colleyville, Texas, is currently serving a three-year probation sentence for posting a harassing ad about his wife online. A Texas woman wants her ex-husband to pay for the time he posted her phone number on Craigslist and urged other men to come to her home and 'take advantage of her'. Bobby Wayne Moore, 39, of Colleyville, Texas, is currently serving a three-year probation sentence after admitting to a charge of online harassment in the case. But now his ex-wife has filed a lawsuit against him, demanding he pay her $1million in damages for the ad which has left her with crippling anxiety. In the lawsuit filed Wednesday, Moore' unnamed wife says they were married for several years before she filed for divorce when he became verbally and physically abusive. She says she had moved out and was living with her two children, including Moore's preschool-age daughter, in March 2014 when he wrote the ad in question on Craigslist. According to the lawsuit, Moore wrote a post that included her phone number and 'a description that the female with such number wanted multiple strangers to come to her "home" and take sexual "advantage of her."' Moore's ex-wife also claims that he sent her hundreds of threatening text and emails. The ex-wife says that the ad caused her to suffer intense headaches, kept her from sleeping at night or enjoying food. She is now asking for $1million in damages for the pain, suffering and mental anguish she has reportedly suffered, as well as the medical bills for therapy and loss of earning capacity because of her fear and emotional distress. 'The issues raised in this case are really important,' her attorney, Mark Allen, said in an email to the Star-Telegram. 'My client's bravery and courage in bringing this lawsuit will hopefully serve to protect all women from this type of abuse.'
