AT LAST: This week's Hot Shot Debut on the Hot R&B Singles chart has been anticipated for the past few weeks. "Bump N' Grind" by R. Kelly (Jive) converts from album play and enters the chart at No. 16. The song has Fiel¡ WLWZ Greenville, S.C., heaven achieved top five rankings at eight stations, including KJMZ Dallas, WBLX-FM Mobile, Ala., and WJHM Orlando. The single enters the chart on the strength of airplay only. Other cuts from the "12 Play" album continue to receive strong airplay, and help push the album to No. 1 on the Top R&B Albums chart this week. Robert Kelly has established himself as a premier artist for '94.

GREATEST GAINERS: "Quiet Time To Play" by Johnny Gill (Motown) earns Greatest Gainer/Sales honors. (These honors previously were titled Power Pick airplay and sales awards.) "Quiet Time" has long been a radio fa- vorite from the album. Now that a live version of the song, recorded in Chi- cago, is available, it enters the Hot R&B Sales chart at No. 49. Gill's single ranks No. 1 in airplay at WVAZ Chicago and No. 13 at crosstown WGCI. "Quiet Time" gets top five ranks at four other stations: WBLX-FM Mobile, WKKV Milwaukee, WQMG Greensboro, N.C., and WPLZ Richmond, Va. It moves up on the overall chart 43-31. "Stay" by Eternal (EMI) has taken radio by storm. The female foursome from England has fun with a cover of Glenn Jones' American hit. It moves up to No. 25 on the airplay -only chart, as 13 stations indicate new radio activity this week. It's top five in rotation on KTOW Tulsa, Okla. It ranks No. 7 on WBLS New York.

IT'S ALL IN THE MARKETING: This week's Pacesetter honor on the Top R &B Albums chart is earned by the "Menace II Society" soundtrack, which makes an 81-56 turnaround in its 31st week on the chart. No, there are no new single releases. No, none of the featured artists have appeared on "The Arsenio Hall Show." My best guess is that the recent release of the movie on home video is the answer.

IRIE JAMAICA: A new regular feature appears in Billboard this week. The Top Reggae Albums chart will appear biweekly, along with the Top World Mu- sic and Top New Age album charts. The reggae chart, with 15 positions, is based on SoundScan sales data. If you have questions or comments, please write or call Billboard's chart manager for reggae music, Suzanne Baptiste.

MONITOR UPDATE: No. 1 on the R&B/Mainstream chart is "Understand- ing" by Xscape (So So Def), and there are two Airpower records: "Because Of You" by Janet Jackson (Virgin) and "Whatta Man" by Salt-N -Pepa featur- ing EnVogue (Next Plateau). No. 1 on the R &B /Adult chart is "Seven Whole Days" by Toni Braxton (LaFace). The two Airpowers are "Groove Thang" by Zhane (Motown) and "U Send Me Swingin"' by Mint Condition (Perspec- tive). "Shoop" by Salt -N -Pepa holds on to the No. 1 spot on the Most Played Rap Tracks chart for the 9th week. The Airpower winner is by Hammer, "It's All Good" (Giant).

AT THE TOP: All of the five bulleted records in the top 10 of the singles chart are making strong gains and earn bullets on both the radio-only and sales -only charts. The difference in points between the records is so small that any one of them could leapfrog the others next week.
