LAST TIME OUT When Southern Utah was last on the field, they suffered a loss to the NAU Lumberjacks in- side the J. Lawrence on the final play of the contest, 34-33.

The first touchdown of the contest belonged to the Thunderbirds, as Justin Miller found Tan- ner McLachlan through the air to put SUU up 6-0.

After NAU got a safety, the two teams went into the second quarter with the score at 6-2. Brandon Schenks caught his first touchdown of the contest to kick things off in the second quarter, putting the Thunderbirds ahead 13-2.

Following NAU’s first touchdown of the game, Miller found Schenks once again to push the visitors ahead 20-9.

The Lumberjacks added another touchdown before the conclusion of the first half, with the Thunderbirds leading 20-15 at the break.

After NAU scored on a 55-yard touchdown to start the second half, Miller found Schenks for a third time to put the Thunderbirds on top 27-21. Schenks’ third touchdown of the day came on a 41-yard pitch-and-catch.

Northern Arizona scored another touchdown before the third quarter came to an end, taking a 28-27 advantage into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Thunderbirds got back on the board and back in the lead with a Landen Measom touchdown from Miller. That gave SUU a 33-28 advantage with 14:56 to play.

Neither team scored again until the final play of the game, when Coleman Owen caught a two-yard touchdown pass from Keondre Mudtee to cap off an eight-play, 81-yard drive to claim a 34-33 victory.

QB1 DEBUTS STRONG In his first career start for Southern Utah, Miller had a very strong debut.

#STORMTHESKY | #11UNITED NEWS & NOTES GAME 2

He finished the game with 29 completions on 40 attempts, completing 72.5 percent of his passes. Five of the completions resulted in touchdowns, with only one interception on the day. He threw for 288 total yards, with a long of 41, and finished with a quarterback rating of 169.3.

In just two appearances last season, Miller completed seven passes for 57 yards and one touchdown. He got the majority of his playing time against Montana State last season.

Miller is replacing former T-Bird quarterback Chris Helbig, who finished the 2019 campaign with 276 completions for 2,952 yards and 15 touchdowns. Helbig also threw 12 interceptions during the course of the season.

SCHENKS DRAWS ATTENTION In the first contest of his sophomore season, Schenks had a massive outing for Southern Utah.

He finished the game with three touchdown catches, which tripled his touchdown production from the previous season.

He had five total catches for 74 yards, averaging 14.8 yards per catch.

During his freshman season in 2019, Schenks caught four passes for 43 yards and one touch- down. He averaged 10.75 yards per catch, and 5.35 yards per game.

DEFENSIVE STRENGTHS The Southern Utah defense showed a lot of promise last Saturday, making a large number of big plays all across the field. AJ Stanley led Southern Utah in total tackles with 10, nine of which were credited as solo with just one assisted.

After being sidelined with injuries for a lot of his time at Southern Utah, La’akea Kaho’oha- nohano-Davis had an impressive start to the 2021 spring season for the Thunderbirds. He finished the game with two sacks for Southern Utah, and totaled seven tackles during the contest. Six of those tackles were credited as solo. He also forced a fumble, but unfortunately the T-Birds were unable to recover.

Francis Bemiy finished the game with five total tackles and one sack, while Greg Rogers was credited with a tackle for loss.

OPPONENT PREVIEW: IDAHO STATE The Bengals of Idaho State opened up their 2021 campaign against the No. 4 ranked Weber State Wildcats last Saturday, and fell to their regional rival 49-21.

ISU found more momentum as the contest went along, scoring all 21 of their points in the second half.

Bengal quarterback Tyler Vander Waal had an up-and-down game for ISU, completing 17- of-42 passes for 304 yards and three touchdowns. He also threw two interceptions and was sacked five times.

On the ground, Malakai Rango rushed 15 times for 70 yards.

Tanner Conner was the top wide receiver in the contest for ISU, catching six passes for 167 yards and two touchdowns. He and Vander Waal connected on a 74-yard play.

Defensively, Connor Wills finished with 12 tackles for ISU.

ISU head coach Rob Phenicie has been with the Bengals since 2015, and has been head coach since 2017.

Last season the Bengals went 3-9 overall, with a 2-6 record in Big Sky play.

Southern Utah had their best offensive showing of the season last year against Idaho State, winning inside Eccles Coliseum 59-34.

BIG SKY AT A GLANCE With three games in action on the opening weekend of play for the spring Big Sky football season, three teams emerged victorious and sit at 1-0 in league standings.

Idaho, Northern Arizona and Weber State all started their seasons with victories, giving them a tie for the league lead.

Eastern Washington, Idaho State and Southern Utah all dropped their first game of the year, and will enter the second weekend looking for a victory.

This weekend, along with Southern Utah hosting Idaho State, UC Davis will travel to Idaho to take on the Vandals and Eastern Washington will travel to Northern Arizona for a date with the Lumberjacks.

WORDS FROM COACH WARREN On Justin Miller’s performance…

“He got hit a couple times, got rid of the ball a little bit sooner than he wanted to on that interception, but he bounced back all day,” SUU head coach Demario Warren said. “He’s a team leader, and he did a great job in the locker room afterwards.”

On Schenks’ breakout performance…

“He’s been phenomenal for us and we’re excited about his future,” Warren said. “He’s a young receiver for us, and he came through when we needed him most with a couple third down catches. We’ve got a lot of good players.”

On moving forward...

“I can’t complain about my team, I think I’ve got to do a better job as head coach,” Warren said. “I think we can win a lot of games this year, so we’ll get back to the drawing board and get our guys in the best position to be successful.”

Head Coach Demario Warren Fifth Season as Head Coach 19-28 Overall, 15-18 Big Sky 12th Season at SUU

At the start of the 2020 season, Thunderbird head football coach Demario Warren will be in his fifth year at the helm of the program.

The 2019 season concluded with three victories for the Thunderbirds, as SUU finished the year with a win- ning record at home at 3-2. The T-Birds knocked off Stephen F. Austin in overtime, blew out Idaho State 59-34 and secured the Grand Canyon Rivalry Trophy with a narrow victory over Northern Arizona.

At the end of the season, along with a number of All-American honors, SUU center Zach Larsen was given the Rimington Award, recognizing him as the best center in the FCS. Larsen started his playing career at SUU in Warren’s first season as head coach in 2016.

In total, seven Thunderbirds were named to the Big Sky All-Conference team following the regular season. Larsen was a First Team Selection, while Braxton Jones, Judd Cockett and Carlton Johnson all earned Third Team Honors. Lance Lawson, Alex Sims and AJ Stanley were all named Honorable Mentions.

The 2018 campaign, and his third year as head coach, proved to be a challenge for Warren and his staff as the Thunderbirds recorded just one victory over the course of the season.

Following the season the Thunderbirds continued to build their brand, however. Larsen was named to both the Walter Camp and Phil Steele FCS All-American Team. Southern Utah also continued to build their foot- print in the National Football League, as Marquez Tucker and Logan Parker were signed as free agents by the Chicago Bears and the Kansas City Chiefs respectively.

In just his second season as head coach of the Thunderbird football team, Warren led the T-Birds to their second Big Sky Conference Championship in 2017 and to their third FCS Playoff appearance in school his- tory.

Finishing the season 9-3, which marked the most Division I victories in a single season for the program, Warren led the Thunderbirds to their first ever trip to the Second Round of the FCS Playoffs when the team received a BYE in the opening round. The Thunderbirds also reached their highest ranking in both major FCS Polls, ending the season No. 13 in the FCS Coaches Poll and No. 14 in the STATS FCS Top 25.

Following the season, Warren was named AFCA Region 5 Coach of the Year and Co-Coach of the Year in the Big Sky Conference. This was his first time earning each of these accolades.

Under Warren’s leadership, the T-Birds had 22 players named to the various Big Sky All-Conference Teams. Larsen was named to a number of All-American teams, Landen Measom and Jalen Russell were named Freshman All-Americans, Mike Needham Earned All-American status from major outlets and Needham and Taylor Nelson were named to the 2017 FCS ADA Academic All-Star Team.

The 2017 Thunderbird football team also shattered previous attendance records, as 11,811 fans packed Eccles Coliseum to watch the Thunderbirds play in the Second Round of the FCS Playoffs.

Coach Warren and his wife, Amanda, are the parents of four children; Demario, Jr., Jazelle, Daylee and Len- nox. #STORMTHESKY | #11UNITED SPRING 2021 THUNDERBIRD COACHES
