RECAP: Last night’s season opener between Tacoma and Albuquerque was postponed due rain. The game will be made up tonight with two 7.0-inning games beginning at 6 pm. It was the first Rainiers season-opening home rainout since 2005 against Fresno.

OF NOTE: The Rainiers 2014 roster features 16 players who played in Tacoma last season. The list of returning Rainiers includes: Xavier Avery, Logan Bawcom, Blake Beavan, Endy Chavez, Ji-Man Choi, Nick Franklin, James Gillheeney, Ty Kelly, Nick Hill, James Jones, Lucas Luetge, , Jesus Montero, Chance Ruffin, Jesus Sucre and Nate Tenbrink. Tacoma’s roster boasts 5 of the top 30 players in the Mariners farm system, as ranked by . 2013 Mariners Minor League Player of the Year leads that group as the organization’s 9th-ranked prospect, followed by RHP Carson Smith (No. 14) and RHP (No. 22), INF Ji-Man Choi (No. 25) and OF James Jones (No. 27). Of the 25 active players of the Rainiers Opening Day roster, 13 have played at least one game in the Major Leagues. OF Endy Chavez leads that list with 10 years and 12 days of MLB service time with 3 players having made their big league debuts just last season (Nick Franklin, Brandon Maurer, Jesus Sucre).

COACHING STAFF: Roy Howell will be the 29th manager in Tacoma franchise history when he debuts as the Rainiers skipper tonight. Howell is in third season coaching in the Mariners organization after two seasons as the hitting coach at Class-A Advanced High Desert. His managerial resume includes three seasons at short-season Eugene (2003-05), three seasons with San Luis of the California Collegiate League (2007-10) and one season leading the field staff for the Road Warriors of the independent Atlantic League (2011). A former first- round selection by Texas in the 1972 draft, Howell logged time in the PCL as a player with Spokane (1974) and Portland (1985), as well as three seasons as a hitting coach with Portland (2000-02). Pitching coach Jaime Navarro, who is entering his 6th season with the Mariners organization, returns to the Rainiers after spending the last 3 seasons as the Mariners bullpen coach. Cory Snyder, who spent the last 3 seasons with Jackson, will serve as hitting coach. Tom Newberg and BJ Downie each return to Tacoma as part of the training staff, while Gabe Bourland will be the team’s performance coach.

RECAP: The Generals scored 5 runs in the top of the 11th inning as Jackson defeated Chattanooga 12-7 in the season-opener on Thursday night. LF Leon Landry (1x5, R, 2 RBI, BB), C (2x5, 3 R, RBI, BB) and CF Jamal Austin (3x6, R, RBI) each drove in a run in the 11th, while RF Kevin Rivers (1x5, R, 2B, 2 RBI, BB) recorded 2 RBI with a double to centerfield. Austin led the Generals with 3 hits, while Hicks, SS (2x6, 2 R, RBI, BB), 2B Jack Marder (2x3, 2 R, RBI, 2 BB) each recorded 2 of the team’s 12 hits. Seven players drove in at least 1 run in the game, while DH Jabari Blash (1x4, 2 R, GS HR, 4 RBI, 2 BB) drove in 4 runs on a 2-out grand slam in the 5th inning. REHAB ASSIGNMENT: Mariners reliever Stephen Pryor is currently on rehab assignment with Jackson. He is 0-0 with a 40.50 ERA (3 ER, 0.2 IP) in 1 appearance with Jackson. Pryor missed the majority of the 2013 season after being placed on the disabled list on April 15 and was transferred to the 60-day disabled list with a tear in his right latissimus dorsi muscle. He had surgery to repair an injured right triceps muscleon Aug. 9, 2013. Pryor was again placed on the 15-day disabled list on to start the 2014 season on March 29.

COACHING STAFF: After managing High Desert in 2013, James Horner will take over as manager of the Mariners affiliate in the Southern League, the Jackson Generals. Horner enters his 8th season with the Mariners (2005-10, 2013-current), but second as manager since returning to the organization prior to last season. Pitching coach Lance Painter returns to Jackson after spending the 2013 season with the High Desert Mavericks. Painter enters his 9th season with the Mariners, including his 4th with Jackson (2010-12). Entering his 4th season with the Mariners organization, Mike Kinkade will serve as the Generals hitting coach. RF (2x4) led the team with 2 hits, while LF Dario Pizzano (1x4), SS Tyler Smith (1x4) and DH Jordy Lara (1x3) each recorded 1 of the Mavericks 5 hits. Starter Matt Anderson (2.2,7,6,6,3,2,HB) recorded the loss after allowing 5 runs in the 3rd inning. Overall he allowed 6 runs on 7 hits, while waking 3 and striking out 2 in 2.2 innings in his first start of the season. REHAB ASSIGNMENT: RHP Taijuan Walker will make his first start of the year tonight on a rehab assignment with High Desert. Walker was placed on the disabled list with a right shoulder impingement on March 29. He pitched in minor league intrasquad games, but did not appear in an “A” game this spring. Walker made his Major League debut with Seattle on Aug. 30 at Houston (5.0,2,1,0,1,2), recording the win. He was the 5th-youngest starting to make his MLB debut in Mariners club history (21 years, 17 days). Overall he went 1-0 with a 3.60 ERA (6 ER, 15.0 IP) in 3 starts with Seattle in 2013. He was also named the Mariners Minor League Pitcher of the Year after going 9-10 with a 2.93 ERA (46 ER, 141.1 IP) in 25 starts combined between AA Jackson and AAA Tacoma.

COACHING STAFF: The Mariners California League affiliate, the High Desert Mavericks, will be managed by Eddie Menchaca, who spent the previous 3 seasons with Clinton. He enters his 6th season in the Mariners organization, including 4 as manager. Menchaca has led his squad to the postseason in each of the last 4 seasons, accumulating a 238-243 (.495) record. Pitching coach Andrew Lorraine enters his 1st season with High Desert after spending the last 2 seasons with Clinton. Hitting coach Max Venable begins his 1st season as coach in the Mariners organization. Venable appeared parts of 12 seasons in the Major Leagues as an outfielder, including stints with the Giants (1979-83), the Expos (1984), the Reds (1985-87), and the Angels (1989-91). Overall he batted .241 (337x1397) with 176 runs scored, 57 doubles, 17 triples, 18 home runs and 128 RBI in 727 career games in the Major Leagues. His son, Will, is currently an outfielder with the .
