2018 POLK COUNTY FAIR Join over 900 youth involved in Clover Kids and 4-H as they showcase their learning at this year’s Polk County Fair from July 18-23 at the State Fairgrounds. With 71 clubs, there is a lot to see and experience, especially with the theme: Fun for the Whole Herd. Below are some things you won’t want to miss!

 Kick-Off BBQ and King-Queen Coronation | Wednesday, July 18 The BBQ is from 6:00-7:30 pm in the 4-H Building. The King-Queen Coronation begins at 7:00 pm.  Communication Event|Thursday, July 19 The communication event is from 12 to 6 pm in the 4-H Building. Stop by and listen to youth speeches and participate in some make and take activities.  Fourth Annual Clover Dash 5K | Saturday, July 21 at 8:30 am Early registration ends July 1!  King Arthur Baking Contest | Saturday, July 23 There are youth and adult divisions. Focus UPCOMING DEADLINES  July 1- All entries are due.  July 1- Livestock ID’s are due for rabbits and poultry in 4-H online to be able to exhibit them at the Polk County or Iowa State Fair.  July 2- All Polk County Fair Entries are Due.

CLUB BASKETS ARE NEEDED

At the Polk County Fair the Polk County 4-H Advisory Board hosts a silent auction featuring themed baskets. Previous basket themes include movie night, BBQ, local gift cards, game night, swimming/water fun, picnic, Friday night lights, etc. Clubs donate the themed baskets and bring them to the 4-H Building on Tuesday evening (same time as booth set-up). Clubs should type a list of items included in the basket and include their club name on the sheet!

events WAVE YOUR 4-H FLAG

The Iowa 4-H Foundation has set a goal to register 5,000 4-H Alumni and Friends before the Iowa State Fair. Those who register and then visit the booth on August 10, will be eligible to pick up a 4-H Alumni membership card. This card will be good for discounts around the Fairgrounds. In addition, alumni and friends who register will be eligible for special events and benefits during the year! As an added incentive, counties can win money for their county endowment for having the most alumni and friends from their county registered! Register here.

4TH ANNUAL CLOVER DASH 5K and TOT TROT Please join us for the 4th Annual Polk County Clover Dash 5K on July 21st, 8:30am at the . This race is in memory of former County Youth Coordinator, Joy Niklasen. New this year is also a free tot trot for those ages K-3rd grade!

All 4-Her's, Clover Kids, families and friends are invited to participate as a runner in the 5K/Clover Trot or as a volunteer. All proceeds go to Polk County 4-H youth activities. Follow your clover-paved trail for a great run with lots of amazing prizes, food and 4-H fun!

Animal and Livestock News

FOOD SAFETY QUALITY ASSURANCE (FSQA) This is a required certification for all youth who exhibit the following animals at the county or state fair.  Cattle- Breeding, Market & Dairy  Swine- Breeding & Market  Sheep- Breeding & Market  Goats- Breeding, Market & Dairy  Poultry  Rabbits The State will be transitioning to a new program called Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA). Because this is a transition year below is the only remaining option for training for the 2018 fair Season.  Online YQCA class option for all age levels  At this time this certification is only good for 1 year.  Please note that the online option will cost you $12/youth- Payable online  You will log in to the website using you 4-H online log in information. https://yqca.learngrow.io/Account/Login

POULTRY REQUIREMENTS Once again in 2018: ALL poultry will be required to have pullorum typhoid testing performed within 90 days of the Polk County Fair. Certificates from the hatchery or store of purchase do not qualify as current testing; this certificate is inva- lid once the birds have entered your farm.

Again this year NO testing will be done at the fair. Instead, we will hold a pre-fair testing day on July 7, 2018. We ask that you please come between the times assigned to your club name.  8-10 am- Clubs A-J  10-11:30 am- Clubs K-Z

IOWA STATE FAIR LIVESTOCK ENTRY The entry system for Iowa State Fair Livestock and Horticulture is to open June 1. If you plan to exhibit at the Iowa State Fair please do the following: 1. Go to https://iowastatefair4hlivestock.fairentry.com

1. Click sign in with 4HOnline 2. Enter your family 4HOnline Email and Password 3. Click Begin Registration. 4. You will then follow the system’s directions to complete the entry 5. After you click submit, ***New for this year*** you should have the option to pay your state fair entry fees online, but you may still choose to pay by Check or Cash. 4-H ALUMNI DATABASE

In 2019, Polk County 4-H will turn 100 years old and in March of 2017, Polk County Extension turned 100 years old and we realized that we do not have a good database of emails for our Alumni! So, in anticipation of this big birthday we are wanting to putting together a better email list. FAIR ENTRY DEADLINE The Polk County Extension Office is a busy, busy place this week of June 25. This is the week to come in with questions and submit paperwork to exhibit at county and state fair. POLK COUNTY FAIR WE NEED YOUTH RUNNERS! We are looking for YOU to help at the Polk County Fair! We’re searching for 4-H members to serve as Youth Runners on Wednesday, July 18, 2018. Runners will help keep judges hydrated, assist 4-H staff, run exhibits to booths, and help set- up when and where needed. Our busiest time is 2 pm and after. Great way to get some Silver Cord Hours!

CLOVER KIDS AT THE FAIR Clover Kids can enter in the Polk County Fair and take projects (you pay one entry fee but take multiple projects) on Conference Judging Day, Wednesday, July 18, 2018. Please read the Clover Kid/Open Class sections in the fair book: http://polkcountyfairiowa.com/ Projects include crafts you made throughout the year and/or an exhibit you created specifically for the fair. In previous years, Clover Kids have shown judges: lego projects, homemade jewelry, baked goods, a coloring page, etc. The judging process is a higher level show-and-tell; ALL exhibits that Clover Kids bring will be judged at one time. The Master Gardener/Clover Kid flower pot project is another project for which Clover Kids must pay and enter by July 2. Clover Kids bring a flower pot, take it to the judge’s table, receive a dollar for it, and take it back to their club booth Clover Kids show animals in Open Class. Please read those sections in the fair book and connect with Marci Vinsand or the animal superintendent if you have any questions about livestock/animals.

ADULT FAIR EVENTS

Adults don't forget that there are events for you to compete in at the fair too!

Open class-- Open to any youth or adult Polk County resident. THere are 5 divisions-- Horticulture, Photography, Fine Arts, Textiles, & Foods. $4 entry fee needs to be paid when you drop of exhibits on July 18, 9a-12pm. Ribbons only, no premiums.

King Arthur Cupcake Contest-- Pre-entry form is required (see PCF website to download). Entries must be received in the Polk County Extension Office by 5:00 p.m. on July 13 or you may turn a form in at the Open Class Department in the 4-H Exhibit Building between 9:00 a.m. and noon on July 18.

ART AT THE FAIR Stop by on Wednesday of the Polk County Fair and leave your mark on our art. We will have a button art project that we need your help to finish. This piece of art will be on display at the Pleasant Hill Art in the Park in September.
