The Gladstone Area Promotion and Development Limited (GAPDL) Communities for Children (CfC) is part of the Family Support Program (FSP) which provides prevention and early intervention programs to families with children up to 12 years, who are at risk of disadvantage and who remain disconnected from childhood services. The initiative is delivered by GAPDL in partnership with the Australian Government Department of Social Services. The CfC program aims to improve opportunities for children in disadvantaged communities, including child protection and development through targeted approaches to vulnerable families on issues of: • Health • Safety • Education • Communication, and • Participation in the broader community GAPDL CfC works in partnership with local agencies, businesses and the community to create positive and sustainable outcomes for children aged 0 to 12 years. As the Facilitating Partner for Communities for Children in Gladstone Region, we are responsible for the contract management and funding for local CfC projects and programs. Objectives of the Program To improve the health and wellbeing of families and the development of young children, from before birth through to the age of 12 year, paying special attention to the key priorities. To create strong child-friendly communities that understand the importance of children and the apply this capacity to maximise the health, wellbeing and early development of young children at the local level. Key Priorities for 2017-2019 Healthy Young Families: Supporting parents and carers to care for their children before and after birth, and throughout the early years. Supporting Families and Parents: Support for parent and carers to provide children with secure attachment, consistent discipline and quality environment that are stable, positive, stimulating, safe and secure. Early Learning: Support parents and carers to access high quality early learning opportunities, early identification and support for children at risk, and skills so they can stimulate and promote child development and learning from birth. School Transition and Engagement: Support children and families to make a smooth transition to school and work with local schools to assist children and families with their ongoing engagement with school. 2018 GAPDL Communities for Children Service Directory 2 Generated: 05 October 2021 Programs and resources funded during 2017-2019 include: 123 Magic and Emotion Coaching: A three-week (6 hours total) parenting course that helps parents and carers learn to manage difficult behaviour in children 2-12 years old. Engaging Adolescents: A three-week (6 hour) parenting course that helps parents and carers of 13-18year olds to develop greater confidence in parenting adolescents and to build stronger relationships with their teens. Circle of Security: An eight-week early intervention program designed to enhance attachment and security between parents and children. This course targets younger children but is relevant to all age groups, inclusive of teenagers. Play2Learn Program: The Play2Learn program is a supported playgroup that aims to improve the early childhood development, parenting skills and connection to community for those who attend. Multicultural Playgroup: The Multicultural playgroup provides a volunteer facilitated playgroup for families with children aged five years and under. The playgroup provides a bridge for community services to connect with culturally and linguistically diverse people (migrants) in the Gladstone Region. Wings to Fly: A professional development program for early years educators (0-5 years). The program builds upon educator’s capacity and strategies by developing a creating understanding of ways to build relationships that support children’s resilience and wellbeing. DADDY: A three-week program for male caregiver, parents and grandparent, DADDY is a practical and fun approach to understanding the important role males play in our children’s lives. Safe Sleep Space: The Safe Sleep Space resource has an emphasis on caregiver interaction and social and emotional development. The approach offers you a better understanding of your baby’s needs, cues and capabilities, then provides a step-by-step guide to workable strategies for creating and emotional and physical safe sleep space. My Safety Steps: The My Safety Steps resource was developed from the Building a Child Safe Community Project. This project focused on creating a more child friendly, child safe community working in partnership across community, Government and business sectors. The booklet includes practical and interactive ideas on how to teach children how to stay safe (physical and emotional queues), who to ask for help if you’re not feeling safe and what to do in an emergency. Parenting Support and Programs Calendar: The Gladstone Region Parenting Support and Programs Calendar is collated by the GAPDL CfC but provides a publication that includes as many support programs listed in a single document. The publication is provided to service providers and support organisations (especially front-line services) to encourage client participation in these programs.
