He won eight and two for Best Original Song. He is best known for his collaborations with composer , with whom he wrote stage musicals including Oklahoma, Carousel, South Pacific, and The Sound of Music. Described by as an “experimental playwright,” Hammerstein helped bring the American musical to new maturity by popularizing musicals that focused on stories and character rather than the lighthearted fluff that characterized musical theater in the nineteen twenties. He also significantly collaborated with , , , and , with whom he wrote the ground-breaking musical .

About the Host

Sean Hartley is the Founding Artistic Director of Broadway Close Up and the Director of Theater@Kaufman. He frequently lectures throughout the country on musical theater through One Day University. As a lyricist, composer and/or book writer, his works for theater include Prelude to a Kiss (with Craig Lucas and Daniel Messe, South Coast Repertory Theater), Little Women (with Kim Oler and Alison Hubbard, Syracuse Stage), Love And Real Estate (with Sam Davis, 59E59) and Cupid and Psyche (with Jihwan Kim, John Houseman Theater, Drama Desk nomination). At Kaufman Music Center he produces the series Broadway Close Up, Broadway Playhouse and The Poppy Seed Players, and he also teaches at Kaufman Music Center’s Lucy Moses School and Special Music School.

About the Artists

Clifton Duncan (singer) was seen in the lead role of Joe opposite Tony Award-winner Anika Noni Rose in John Doyle’s critically acclaimed revival of Jones at Classic Stage . Prior to this he was a stand-out soloist in City Center’s Hey, Look Me Over!, played The Balladeer in City Center’s all-star Assassins, and made his Broadway debut with the American cast of the beloved British comedy The Play That Goes Wrong. He earned his MFA from ’s Graduate Acting Program.

Greg Jarrett’s (music director) credits on Broadway include , Les Liaisons Dangereuses, Dames at Sea, Side Show, and The Nance.
