British Triathlon Annual Report BRITISH TRIATHLON ANNUAL REPORT 2015 CONTENTS PRESIDENT’S WELCOME PRESIDENT’S WELCOME 3 Welcome to the Annual Report for the financial year to end March 2015. YEAR IN IMAGES 4-5 There is always a big time gap between the end of the financial year and publication of our annual report. There has been another season’s racing under our belt and what a good season it has been. WINNING PERFORMANCES 6-9 One of the highlights for me was the first European Games held in Baku, Azerbaijan, the country of fire. A team consisting of Gordon Benson, Tom Bishop and Phil Graves blasted around the bike course together and (almost THE ATHLETES 7 literally) burnt off the majority of the competitors – much to the astonishment of the spectators. Gordon was left to forge ahead at the beginning of the run and win in splendid isolation, but it was an inspiring team effort that laid the AGE-GROUP MEDAL TABLE 8 foundations for his win. In Chicago at the ITU World Triathlon Grand Final, Lauren Steadman stole INSPIRATIONAL EVENTS 10-15 the show in the PT4 category of the ITU Paratriathlon World Championships to consolidate her claim to be the one to beat. She had also won in Geneva at the ETU Paratriathlon European Championships and we hope her form TRI LIVERPOOL IN NUMBERS 13-15 will carry over to next year and the Paralympic Games in Rio. We were also treated in Chicago to an absorbing duel in the elite women’s race between Gwen Jorgensen and our feisty duo of Non Stanford and Vicky Holland. Gwen STRATEGY IN ACTION 16 prevailed on the day, but one feels that our leading Brits are getting ever closer to matching her run speed off the bike. We are yet to find a headline sponsor during the season, which has contributed TRIATHLON TRUST 17 to a loss of £10,265 in the year. Our balance sheet however shows our continuing strength with reserves at the year-end of £1,095,456. Naturally we cannot eat into the reserves indefinitely but from our recent talks with potential FINANCIAL REVIEW 18-24 sponsors we are convinced that it’s just a matter of time before one recognises what we have to offer and as Rio approaches the level of sponsor interest has LAST WORD 25 been palpably increasing. Over the past year we have integrated Triathlon England more closely into our organisation and a number of key senior management roles are now addressing the needs of both organisations. We are absolutely convinced that this will make for a more effective service to our stakeholders in the future, whether it is UK Sport, Sport England, the ITU and ETU or the triathlon community. This integration means that we have to be careful not to cross subsidise each other. Good governance is all the more important and we strive in our behaviours to live the Nolan principles for good governance in not for profit organisations. As we approach the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, I am confident that your National Governing Body is well placed to perform to the best of its ability. 2 2015 BRITISH TRIATHLON ANNUAL REPORT Vicky Holland celebrates her victory in Cape Town. So when it comes to the sport of professional cycling, why aren't women receiving half the road? Directed by pro cyclist Kathryn Bertine, HALF THE ROAD: The Passion, Pitfalls & Power of Women's Professional Cycling explores the world of women's professional cycling, focusing on both the love of sport and the pressing issues of inequality that modern-day female athletes face in male dominated sports. With footage from some of the world's best races to interviews with Olympians, World Champions, rookies, coaches, officials, doctors and family members, HALF THE ROAD offers a unique insight to the drive, dedication, and passion it takes for a female cyclist to thrive. Included as well are notable women who have achieved inroads in other endurance sports, such as Kathrine Switzer, the first woman to official register (as "K.V. Switzer") and run the all-male Boston Marathon in 1967; the iconic photo of her being attacked by a race official was listed by Time-Life as among its "100 Photographs that Changed the World." Director’s Bio: Kathryn Bertine is a professional cyclist, writer and filmmaker.

• The Triathlete Hour Ep. 48
The Triathlete Hour Ep. 48. - Kathryn Bertine_mixdown Kelly: Welcome to the Triathlete Hour. And this week we have a fun episode with Kathryn Bertine. Now, if you're like me, you've heard of Kathryn because she spearheaded the successful campaign to get a women's Tour de France race-- Now a one-day event called La Course-- which she also raced in. And she produced the documentary Half the Road. She's been an editor for ESPN writing their popular column on trying to make the Olympics in any sport, any country, just go out and make it happen. Something she actually lived through too. And she also wrote a book about it. Another book about her years as a professional figure skater... And now she's here with her latest book Stand, about how to be an activist and the behind the scenes story of the toll it took on her personal life as she fought for equality in women's cycling. But what you might not know about Kathryn is she started out as a pro triathlete before switching to cycling and she tells us what it is she still loves about triathlon, some of the details of how she worked to make change. And after all that upheaval, what it was like having a massive crash mid race that left her nearly dead in Mexico. And coming back from that. It's an interesting conversation because Kathryn is always an interesting person. And before we get to that Laura Sidall joins us for Sid Talks to talk about some of the big news coming out of triathlete magazine this week also, who gets to race during COVID.
