Principal’s Report Week 3 Term 3 2013

Welcome back to another exciting term. I hope students and parents have settled into their school routine over the last two weeks.

We started the term on a high note with our “By Effort We Achieve” Merit Assembly, a record number of students were recognised for their consistent effort and working to the nest of their ability throughout semester 1. We also announced the new prefects for 2014 and inducted them into the position with a morning tea for parents.

Official “Tie tying” ceremony at the parent morning tea.

Prefects 2014

The “Block” Bally Style!

In recent newsletters we have displayed plans for a school improvement program. The concept for the program is ‘Inspiration’ and we have some truly dedicated parents working hard to develop the plan. We are now at a stage where we can make a start. The first phase will be to design a new entry point to the school, one which will have a scale and prominence that befits a high school. The theme of a “Bally Walk of Fame” (see below) will recognise some very famous ex-students that have has successful careers in writing and TV and Film production.

The project will kick off this term and as the school budget is very modest we will be asking parents and students to come to a working bee this term on Sunday 25th August to clear the area of plants and debris. The plan is to clean the buildings using a gurney and remove the undergrowth.

We desperately need parents and friends to help, particularly if you are a surveyor, renderer or landscaper or you know someone that would donate some of their time for the school community.

Learning and Support Team

The Learning and Support room in A block will now be open at recess and lunch every day for games. Students must eat their recess and lunch before entering the room.

Homework Club has also started back up this term. The Learning and Support room will be open from 8am on Wednesdays for all students needing homework support with Miss Dowsett.

Any further enquiries please contact Miss Dowsett via email: [email protected]

The Year 11 Camp

The Yr 11 camp to Forster was a great success. The students bonded with each other as they realised that very soon they would be entering their HSC academic year and soon after that they will finish their schooling years forever and go off into the wider world. Many of the activities at the camp were designed to challenge them to work together in teams and have them problem solve as a corporate, not as an individual. The individual activities were designed to have them reflect on the types of life choices they will need to make as they grow older and navigate their way through the late teens and their early twenties. The old “Ton of Fun” park at Forster was the venue for this this year’s camp and the boys really appreciated the broad number of activities they could attempt. The mud run was definitely a high light. Ms Langdon our Yr11 Advisor remarked on a number of occasions just how mature and thoughtful your sons were and that she was especially proud of the way they helped each other out. The staff at the outdoor education team wre very impressed with our boys and remarked that they were the “best school” by far. Naturally we agreed! Ms Langdon also wanted to say a big thanks to Mr Surace, Ms Dibley, Ms Dowsett and Ms Duncan. They were always there for the boys.

Actions speak louder than words so here are some photos of their experiences...

Faculty of Arts

It’s another great start to a great term for The Faculty of Arts with lots of exciting opportunities for our students. It's also a term for challenges for our year 12 students with their Visual Arts Body of Work due later this term, while our year 12 Music 1 students prepare for their HSC examination which is scheduled for later in September. I urge these students to use the school facilities and seek out aid and advice from their eager and experienced teachers who are always there to help.

Music @ Bally Combined High Schools Music Camp

Last term The Faculty of Arts in collaboration with another high schools for have organised a Music Camp for students enrolled in BBC Ensembles and selected Elective classes.

The held at Elanora Conference Centre, began on the afternoon of Week 8 Wednesday 12 June. The students worked with tutors and staff from both participating schools. The aim of the camp was to provide students with the opportunity to: work on new music in an exciting, enriching and focused musical environment, lift performance practise to a higher level and learn music required for Winter Band Tour. The students represented our school with distinction. At the end of the camp, the families were invited to attend a showcase of the four days’ work in the hall at 2:00pm on Sunday 16 June. We thank all our parents who not only supported the camp through various means but also for attending our camp concert.

BBC Winter Band Tour 2013

A week following the Combined High School Camp, student from Balgowlah Boys Campus Ensembles and Elective Music classes embarked on their very first Band Tour. Winter Band Tour 2013 started on Week 9 Monday 24 June and continued through to Wednesday 26 June. Our Ensembles visited 6 primary schools (two each day) including: Brookvale, Beacon Hill, Manly West, Harbord, Manly Vale and North Public Schools and performed a one hour show to more than 3500 primary school students and staff. This tour not only gave our students opportunity to perform for a large audience but also realise their passion for music as well as strengthen our schools relationship with our Primary schools.

MAD – Music Art and Drama

This is special term for The Faculty of Arts. It's when all our students showcase three terms of hard work and the commitment they have shown in the areas of Music, Art, Drama and Languages in an evening we are calling MAD. MAD 2013 will be held over two nights, Tuesday 27 and Wednesday 28 August.

These two evenings will give our students the opportunity to display Year 7 to 12 Visual Arts works in an art exhibition where it will feature the Year 12 Body of Works in their completed form as well as display our Year 7 to 11 Visual Arts Works. The Visual Arts exhibition will also be accompanied by Balgowlah Boys Work Studies and Hospitality students who will provide array of refreshments and nibbles for our guests.

After this exhibition, the evenings will continue for two fantastic nights of Music and Drama performances as well as video presentation form our Language students. These performances will feature our entire year 7 and 8 music students singing in a huge choir accompanied by the Balgowlah Boys Orchestra performing works such as Gloria by Vivaldi, In Callem Fero by Jenkins, I Gotta Felling by Black Eyed Peas, the theme from Lord of the Ring and many more... The year 9 to 12 elective Music students will be showcased with music from many styles and genres. Visual Arts @ Bally

Visual Arts at NBSC Balgowlah Boys Campus now has a Twitter and Instagram feed! All parents, teachers and students are welcome to follow @artatbally to see the fantastic works our students are producing, as well as to keep up to date with what is happening in Visual Arts at Balgowlah Boys.

The Year 7 e-waste entomology project is a key feature of this month’s Instagram feed; Year 7’s using filters and cropping to document their assemblages in an artistic manner.

Visual Arts is preparing for MAD 2013 in Week 8, teachers and students mounting a range of outstanding works by Years 7 and 8 mandatory, as well as 9 to 11 elective students. Senior HSC Visual Arts Bodies of Works will also be shown during MAD 2013. All parents, teachers and students are invited to attend.

Year 12 HSC students will sit their Visual Arts Trial paper on the Monday of Week 4. It is strongly suggested that students revise their three areas of content (the frames, conceptual framework and practice), and practise writing about key artists, artworks and themes/concepts from different points of view. Practising the Section I and II questions of previous HSC past papers from the Board of Studies website (http://www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au/hsc_exams/) will assist students in knowing the format of the paper and the types of questions asked.

Year 11 Visual Arts

This is a big term for Year 11 Visual Arts as it is the third and final term of the Preliminary Visual Arts course before student commences their HSC year in 4th Term. Currently in

these students are investigating different forms of underground art, street art and installation art, specifically studying the practice of street artist and paste-up queen 'Swoon'. As such the boys have been busy brainstorming, planning and creating their own works that will start popping up in and around Balgowlah Boys Campus G block in the coming weeks. Keep your eyes peeled!

Drama @ Bally

It is with pleasure and excitement that I have the opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Miss Gardiner, and I have been given the wonderful opportunity to teach English and Drama at Balgowlah Boys. Over the last couple of weeks I have been overwhelmed by the energy and positive attitudes of the staff and students here at the school. I look forward to my time here, and the opportunity to develop relationships that assist in developing a positive and enjoyable educational experience. Drama is a creative, interactive and vibrant subject that allows students to explore concepts and ideas through experimental work. Over the next two terms I will be working closely with year 7 & 8 introducing, re-visiting and exploring key concepts of Drama. This will include improvisation, the elements of drama and the skills required to actively participate in theatre sports. The Year 9 Drama class have recently started a unit that is centred upon the exploration of Comedy. Within this unit we will examine the central components to developing a humorous character. The boys will be devising a duologue that demonstrates their understanding of comedy as an art form and their ability to develop a character. They have demonstrated their understanding and confidence in the subject area, and I look forward to observing their future progress. I am delighted by the level of enthusiasm that is evident in all year groups, and I look forward to witnessing the development of the Drama students over the coming months.

Drama Club

WOW!! What a vibrant, enthusiastic, imaginative, talented and animated bunch of young men! The drama club is off to a great start again this term with the group proving that they have various ideas to possibly develop. We are urgently exploring the opportunity to perform at our schools MAD night in September. The boys have workshopped ideas associated with MAD and have come up with some very colourful and humorous

improvisations. I look forward to mentoring such a creative young group as they navigate their way through the creative process.

The Drama Club meets every Tuesday afternoon at 3.30pm until 5pm, if you are interested in joining our group please come and speak with me. I thank you all for my warm welcome and I look forward to meeting with the extended Balgowlah community throughout the year.

Languages

Last holidays I went to Japan. I can’t say I’ve done anything better in my life. The food was perfect, and everything was cheaper than you could imagine. The Japanese people were extremely kind and hospitable, and I learned quite a large amount about the traditions in Japan and also the language. Like how you can get anywhere on public transport and get anything at a convenience store, and how you must take your shoes off before going in the house. Although I think Nason learned more about that (a couple of mistakes were made in that district). We travelled to Tokyo Disneyland (the happiest place on earth), and saw other wonderful places such as the Odawara Castle, Mt. Fuji and the shops, which should really get their own mention. If you asked anyone that went on the trip, they would tell you that it was amazing, and that’s a reflex response.

More Japanese News

Two of our Year 10 Japanese students, Adam Douglas and Nason Pybus, recently spent 2 weeks in Odawara, Japan, for the 24th Annual Manly Odawara exchange visit. This trip involves living with a Japanese family for 2 weeks and learning about life in Japan. This trip occurs once a year and is open to students of Japanese in YR9 and above. Any student interested in next year’s visit is encouraged to talk with Mr Ian Host or Mrs Vanessa Briggs.

This Year’s Manly Odawara Exchange Participants with chaperones, Mayor Jean Haye and Alan Campbell Sherwood, in YR10 Japanese, competed in the LeSurf Annual Tokimeki cup and proudly represented Balgowlah Boys. This is a Japanese speech contest where students are to stand in front of an audience and read a story in Japanese. The students are marked on their fluency, pronunciation and intonation. All students of Japanese are encouraged to compete in this competition.

Later this year, Balgowlah Boys will be host to 20 students from Naha-Nishi High School, Okinawa, Japan. We are currently looking for host families. If you are interested, please contact Mr Ian Host or Mrs Vanessa Briggs.

Mr Ian Host is starting to organise a trip to New Caledonia for French elective students for next year. The trip will be for close to 2 weeks and involve language immersion lessons and of course relaxing on the beaches. This trip will be open to both Year 9 and Year 10 elective students next year.

Another fantastic project that is underway is the Language Short Film Festival. This evening will exhibit short films created by Year 9 and 10 elective language students from all five campuses of the Secondary College Language in French, Japanese, German and Italian. The evening will start at 6pm on Wednesday 31 July 2013. All welcome with free entry.

Sport Report

Sport continues this term in the exact manner it did in Term 2. Whilst we have had some interruption from rain, it’s generally been smooth sailing this year for recreational and grade sport.

Just a reminder that all school-based sports such as badminton and table tennis start at 1:10pm and most grade sport buses leave at 12:45pm. With the exception of ‘away’ games all sports conclude at their venues and students are dismissed from there. eg: Tenpin bowling is dismissed from Dee Why RSL.

The Year 7 gala day is on Tuesday 6th August at Nolan’s. Any student who is not in a team or missed the information sheet needs to see Mr Theodore ASAP. Congratulations to the following teams:

U/14 Futsal team Red team made semis at regional championships Blue team runners-up at regional championships.....Qualified for state titles to be held in August

U/15 AFL team Competed well and made the second round of the gala knockout (highest ranked loser!!!). This is also the first AFL team for Balgowlah Boys in living memory!

Opens rugby league team Last 20 in state and now compete in Dubbo later this week, well done!

U13 League team Won the All Schools Competition for our district. This qualified the team to play for the Sydney North District at NSW All Schools Carnival in Penrith on the 30th July.

Open Volleyball team Continue to play with confidence and enthusiasm in the Manly Warringah Volleyball Assn, Sunday night comp. My thanks to all the boys and their parents for their commitment!
