The Impact of Globalization on Small Scale Artisans in Azrou, Morocco An Interactive Qualifying Project Submitted to the Faculty of WORCESTER POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE In conjunction with Al-Akhawayn University In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Bachelor of Science By ____________________________ Wadii Bellamine _______________________________ Marouane Afiri Date: January 08, 2007 Approved: _________________________________ Professor Bland Addison, Major Advisor _________________________________ Professor Tahar El-Korchi, Co-Advisor Abstract Faced with the impact of globalization upon business productivity and the consumer’s expectations and demands in current-day Morocco, Moroccan small scale artisans are struggling to compete and earn income to survive. This new phenomenon is due to a smaller interest in the handicraft sector both by the state and by the young consumers, whereas until today, the most basic infrastructural needs for successful business such as affordable transportation and affordable means of publicity are absent in remote villages such as Azrou. The reduced interest in the handicraft sector from the upcoming generation is also a result of globalization and threatens to lead this sector to extinction. Thankfully, the state has come to realize these emerging phenomena and has began an effort to improve the handicraft sector and keep it alive since this last has represented a major source of income for Morocco in the past. Our general approach was to study the small scale artisans specifically in Azrou in order to acquire a deep understanding of the problem, and through studied successful cases, propose solutions and recommendations for the artisans in Azrou as an alternative to the state’s strategy for the improvement of the artisanal sector in Morocco. The results of our research show that there are ways for the small-scale artisans to improve their businesses with the means they currently have, and these include the use of e-commerce, taking advantage of ethical tourism to publicize and help their businesses grow. The implementation of these recommended solutions will surely aid these artisans, but it is the task of the state to improve or develop the infrastructure needed to ease access to e-commerce and the tourist sector, ultimately ensuring the long-term prosperity of the small-scale artisan business and, ultimately, their quality of life. Youssef Ouahmane, the stone carver, Mohammed Abdeljabbar, the wood carver, Said, the metal carver, Mohammed, the other wood carver, and Fatima, the president of the women’s weaving cooperative, are all people that were very kind and welcoming to us, and were not reluctant to share with us their most troublesome concerns. Last but not least, we can’t forget Lee Wilbur, the Peace Corps Volunteer who worked in the Azrou Artisanat in the past, and whom was the primary contact who pointed us to most of the people we met in Azrou and Ifrane. But first, another sort of acknowledgement is necessary. The parsimonious theories and neat typologies I was taught in graduate school in no way prepared me to understand the tremendous sacrifices and risks of physical and psychological violence that individuals take in authoritarian contexts to participate as members of the political opposition; that is something one learns in the field. I’d like to begin the dissertation by acknowledging my deep respect for those activists, regardless of political persuasion, whose phone calls are recorded and monitored, who are followed every time they leave their homes, who risk their lives and the lives of those they love on behalf of their ideals. For those who have “disappeared,” for those who have endured torture, sometimes for years or decades, for those who are presently in detention, for those whose bodies are dissolved in acid, buried at sea or in mass graves, I acknowledge your sacrifice.     Morocco’s economy is growing at a sustained pace involving critical development activities in sectors like: Industry; agriculture; tourism; and energy. The water demand of these sectors will have to be met against the backdrop of shrinking water resources and amidst rapidly growing competition for water use. Il y avait la possibilité de s’installer à la ville de Taza ou dans les villages environnants comme Oued Amlil par exemple, tout en faisant la navette en voiture. Cette option a été écartée d’office, car nous voulions résider au milieu du parc naturel, loin des véhicules, du bruit et de la pollution. Bref, nous cherchons le dépaysement complet, pour profiter pleinement, nuit et jour, de la beauté de la nature et de l’air vivifiant de la moyenne montagne. Même cette fois-ci, la randonnée a failli ne pas avoir lieu, suite à l’annulation unilatérale par SMS et à la dernière minute par le propriétaire d’un gîte récent (construit en 2014) à la suite de problèmes familiaux, d’après le message.

    Chapitre VI La ville et ses équipements collectifs Introduction L'intérêt accordé à la connaissance du milieu urbain et de ses équipements collectifs suscite un intérêt croissant, en raison de l’urbanisation accélérée que connaît le pays, et de son effet sur les équipements et les dysfonctionnements liés à la répartition des infrastructures. Pour résorber ce déséquilibre et assurer la satisfaction des besoins, le développement d'un réseau d'équipements collectifs appropriés s'impose. Tant que ce déséquilibre persiste, le problème de la marginalisation sociale, qui s’intensifie avec le chômage et la pauvreté va continuer à se poser La politique des équipements collectifs doit donc occuper une place centrale dans la stratégie de développement, particulièrement dans le cadre de l’aménagement du territoire. La distribution spatiale de la population et par conséquent des activités économiques, est certes liée aux conditions naturelles, difficiles à modifier. Néanmoins, l'aménagement de l'espace par le biais d'une politique active peut constituer un outil efficace pour mettre en place des conditions favorables à la réduction des disparités. Cette politique requiert des informations fiables à un niveau fin sur l'espace à aménager. La présente étude se réfère à la Base de données communales en milieu urbain (BA.DO.C) de 1997, élaborée par la Direction de la Statistique et concerne le niveau géographique le plus fin à savoir les communes urbaines, qui constituent l'élément de base de la décentralisation et le cadre d'application de la démocratie locale. Au recensement de 1982, était considéré comme espace urbain toute agglomération ayant un minimum de 1 500 habitants et qui présentait au moins quatre des sept conditions énumérées en infra1.

A significant number of well-established human rights obligations apply in the three quarters of the territory that is under Moroccan occupation. International law contains clear prescriptions for the protection, political independence and advancement of the Saharawi people, who were the original inhabitants of Western Sahara, then Spanish Sahara, until they were abandoned by Spain in 1975. Foremost is the right of self-determination of non-self-governing peoples. The norms prescribed by the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights have been consistently violated in occupied Western Sahara. This submission for the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights has been prepared by Western Sahara Resource Watch, an international non-governmental organization, based in Brussels. It is intended to highlight the significant failure of Morocco as the occupying power or State with responsibility for the territory of Western Sahara and the Saharawi people to ensure even the most basic compliance with the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.
