• Septe~ber 8th, 1540 :~Capt~ Alvarado in advance of C~ronado's army reached the Rio Grande and named it "Nuestra Senora"~ He met people fro~ 12 Tigua'villag~s (located ·north of present day Albuquerque). He was met by Indians playing pipes with.an old man for a spokesman. The .Indians were of 1good appearancev:earing cotton clothing and the skins of cows (buffaid) and feather dress¢s. ·. They wore their hair · short. The old men Jere in authority. Seven other villages in the province had been destroyed by those Indians who paint their eyes and live with the co~s. Alvarado sent back word to toronado recommending the army encamp with the Tiguas for winter.(Twitchell . 1963: Vol. 1., pg.292) Castaneda, a chronicler of Coronados expedition, described the 12 viliages as being on the banks of the river in a . vall~y six miles wide with 4 more villages at the base of mountains to the east and an additional three on the heights. His hesdquarters were in the capital city of Santa Fe, and Lt was in this ~pper part of the Rio Grande that mo~t Spanish colonists had settled. , A second segment of Spaniards lived farther to the south on the Rio Abajo, as thisportion of the Rio Grande . ; was called.
