Quality assurance Not all production lines use a quantitative evaluation of the camera performance in aspects, such as resolution, optical centering, shading etc. in order to differentiate the acceptable from the unacceptable cameras. This sometimes leads to a problem that the quality judgment depends on the individual person on the production line. A problem that can be avoided using an objective iQ-Analyzer method that has been developed by Image Engineering and is currently and successfully being used in camera production. In one specifi c project the camera is partly produced by one company and partly by another one. In order to agree on the acceptable tolerances and to minimize failures the two companies use the same production line control system.

LG2

The handy light box that works with four fl uorescent tubes One remarkable feature of the illuminator is its compact design. It even fi ts on the smallest laboratory table. An additional frame of solid metal provides high standing stability. The of approx. 4700 K can be fi ltered to achieve other correlated color temperatures. The standard test chart size for the illuminators is our D280 format. A dimmable version is also available with the LG2-D.

LE6

The spherical illuminators work on the principle of an integrating sphere A light source illuminates the interior of a sphere, which is coated with a special white diffuse coating. A plane (measure window), which usually needs to be small compared to the diameter of the sphere and oriented perpendicular to the incident light, is illuminated extremely uniform. Due to our internal design the measuring window can be much bigger. A special construction allows the dimming of the light down to approx. 1% of the maximum illumination without changing the color temperature. The color temperature is 3200 K +/- 50 K. Different fi lters are available for changing the color temperature as well as a 50 W and a 100 W version. LE6-S is a cheaper, not dimmable version of LE6 with constant illuminance of approx. 3000 lx for LE6-50S and 8000 lx for LE6- 100S. The standard test chart size for the illuminators is our D280 format. D240S has the same slide format but a smaller picture format. Therefore it fi ts without an adapter. Adapters are available for the chart sizes D240 and D205.

LE7 iQ-LED TECHNOLOGY Test chart illumination par excellence with various standard spectra (e.g. A, D50, D65) The LE7 is based on a 0.5 m integrating sphere. The basic version is equipped with two iQ-LED elements. For very high illumination levels, a version with four iQ-LEDs is also available. Because of the optimized positioning of the iQ-LED elements in the upper and lower front area, a high uniformity of more than 97% in the active chart area is reached. The illumination level of the predefi ned and selectable spectral standard distributions can be changed by keeping the spectral distribution constant. This can be achieved by simply typing in the new illumination value in the control software. Therefore, color conversion fi lters are no longer needed and a high accuracy can be reached in every intensity level of any kind of light source. Individual spectra can be generated and, together with the EX1, you can reproduce your own light sources. The LE7 comes in a lightproof box and with an integrated micro spectrometer to verify your spectral distribution in real-time, just like our CAL1. Together with the iQ-LED C++ API interface, it is possible to integrate the control in custom software or to create your own operating software.

CAL1 iQ-LED TECHNOLOGY The one light source solution in the fi eld of camera characterization and calibration CAL1 is a single light source that can be used for camera calibration aspects like defective , luminance and color shading measurement, exposure adjustment, spectral sensitivity determination and many more aspects. This calibration light source is designed to characterize and calibrate cameras in the lab or on the production line. Its compact design consists of one iQ-LED element in a 0.3 m integrating sphere that illuminates a 70 mm opening. Because of the non-refl ective special diffuson fi lter on the sphere opening, a uniformity of more than 98% is reached. The CAL1, with its integrated micro spectrometer, is controlled by the easy-to-use iQ-LED control software or, if upgraded with the individual activation of each of the 20 narrow band color the iQ-LED C++ API, it can be integrated in your individual test channels. procedures. Therefore, you only need one device for all light sources such as Because of the very short response time of the iQ-LED, a full A, D50, D65, any other standard light source or self-generated calibration can be performed in under one second, if the camera spectra. For spectral sensitivity measurements, the CAL1 allows is fast enough in terms of image processing and image transfer.

iQ-FOV BOX

When charts become highly distorted due to extreme wide fi elds of view, the evaluation of camera performance becomes diffi cult. Predistorted charts sometimes help. However, the problem is that one chart only works for one type of lens. Cameras with a fi eld of view around 180° require curved originals. After testing many structures, we fi nally ended up with our iQ-FoV Box. It consists of metal plates with magnetic charts. These charts can be turned and tilted in a most fl exible manner so that for every camera a combination of chart positions can be found to test camera characteristics, e.g resolution. The camera is inserted into the box from the back and the front can be opened for easy chart adjustment. Fields of applications are the automotive and surveillance area. Technical data on request.

Additional features Basic features of the lightSTUDIO Optional LED lightHEAD Now Image Engineering has gone even further. The lightHEAD can be exchanged for an LED based one that uses 20 narrow band LED channels and 2 white LED channels to spectrally match almost every standard light source. The LEDs are combined USB interface dimmable several illuminants interior inclusive to units of 80 LEDs on a 10 x 10 cm area and 10 of these are combined to form the larger light source. One set of fl uorescent tubes is also added to get the spiky spectrum charateristic for these sources.

Optional moving targets (with rack) Most devices nowadays feature still photography and video functionality. In order to compare compression technologies, artifacts, motion blur and other aspects in video the lightSTUDIO can be equipped with moving targets. One of these is a horizontally moving frame that can hold a variety of targets including a dead leaves or a slanted edge one. The speed of the motion is adjustable up to 3 m/s. A second movable section is a rotating plate on the back wall of the box which also allows for adjusting the speed (up to 600 rpm). It can carry a sector chart or any kind of custom chart. In Moving chart in the center order to stabilize the whole setup with moving parts the option iQ-LED for moving targets also comes with a rack, on which the box is TECHNOLOGY mounted.

HDR option Another aspect that is important for modern digital cameras is the ability to capture high contrast scenes. In order to really create a high contrast scene it is necessary to add some back illuminated test patterns or images to the box. Two LG2 light boxes with transparent charts are used for this purpose. In order to avoid stray light, which reduces the contrast in the foreground, the light boxes are placed in the back of a surrounding black box. This box is inserted in the center part of the back wall of the lightSTUDIO. Contrast ratios of more than 10.000:1 can be reached. HDR modul in the center 22 tools imageQuality MEASUREMENT DEVICES

TE42 // FORTY TWO

The TE42 is a multipurpose test chart and is available for cameras with sampling rates between 2 and 170 megapixels. It was designed to get a quick overview of a camera’s image quality performance by taking just a single image under a given illumination condition. It consists of structures for the analysis of resolution, texture reproduction, acutance, dynamic range, noise, color reproduction, distortion, shading, chromatic aberration, and visual analysis. These can all be automatically analyzed by using the iQ-Analyzer software.

RESOLUTION TEXTURE LOSS

One of the most important values when testing a digital camera Sinusoidal Siemens stars with reduced contrast are eminently is the resolution. Resolution, according to ISO 12233 (digital still suited to analyze texture loss – meaning the loss of fi ne details cameras) and ISO 16067 (scanners), is the ability of an image with low contrasts. The loss of texture in an imaging system is capture device to reproduce fi ne details in the captured scene. caused by noise reduction or other image processing techniques. It is important to see, that the number of pixel is not the same as the resolution. The number of pixel is a necessary but not suffi cient requirement to get to a certain resolution. Optical parts TE280 TE276 like the lens and the antialiasing fi lter, as well as image processing, also have a signifi cant impact on the resolution of a camera. And the smaller the pixels get, the higher the infl uence of optical components on the resulting resolution.

TE268 (fi xed aspect ratio; 4:3 and 3:2 available)

The upcoming ISO 19567 standard for texture analysis comprises a measurement method using low contrast Siemens stars.

The Resolution module of the iQ-Analyzer, Image Engineering’s TE253 9x analysis software, supports the analysis of the stars including the (aspect ratio variable) new TE280 chart. Using Siemens stars with a reduced contrast (18% modulation), you can benefi t from the well-known advantages of sinusoidal Our standard chart for resolution measurements is the sinusoidal Siemens stars. A pilot study published at the Electronic Imaging Conference low light bright light 2008 has shown that both methods, the Siemens star and slanted low contrast low contrast edge, deliver the same results when applied to uncompressed and unsharpened images. A unique manufacturing technology has lead to a new generation of TE253 and TE268 (H series) with the sinusoidal Siemens stars. This technology produces extremely high-resolution continuous tone structures on photographic paper and enables to measure cameras with up to 180 Megapixels using our standard A1066 target size. To get there we decreased the size of the center mark on each Siemens star from 12 mm to 5 mm.
