There’s a beautiful new year ahead as we celebrate the power of possibility in our increasingly challenging and polarizing times. So, it seems appropriate to kick off our “theatrical new year” with John Patrick Shanley’s beautiful play: Outside Mullingar. I owe David Ira Goldstein a debt of gratitude for leaving this slot open for me to choose a play I deeply love this season. Not only does it mark my directorial debut here at Arizona Theatre Company, it also allows me to introduce you to a host of actors and a few designers. I’ve long collaborated with these artists, but they are mostly new to Arizona audiences, and I owe the cast enormous thanks for joining me here. They are amongst my most cherished collaborators, so forgive my indulgence. I’ve known Robynn Rodriguez since I was nineteen years old. I’ve built over 30 plays with John Hutton. I met Larry Bull hiking in 1996 and subsequently hired him over several seasons at the Utah Shakespeare Festival, among other companies. I’ve watched and admired Cassandra Bissell’s work at many national theatres and finally had the honor of hiring her in 2014. They are exceptional individuals on and off-stage. In addition, this marks my first collaboration with our brilliant resident designers, Kish Finnegan and Brian Jerome Peterson, both of whom I’ve known and admired from afar. This is promis- ing algebra. Our legacy meets our future as we engage in building work that not only embraces a community of artists, but adds new ingredients for the future. Speaking of ingredients, this play is delicious. In my opinion, it’s the most gorgeous play John Patrick Shanley has written. And you’re about to see it. I’ll let you do that without me explaining it here. Just remember: life is full of surprises; may a good one bless you in this New Year. Fondly, David Ivers Artistic Director [email protected] 4 2017 2018 LETTER FROM MANAGING DIRECTOR BILLY RUSSO Happy New Year! The staff and board of Arizona Theatre Company, David and I, join in wishing you happiness, good health and good news in the new year. Speaking of good news, I’m thrilled to introduce you to three very talented, passionate and committed people who have joined us over the last four months to take on the responsibilities of key positions at Arizona Theatre Company. Julia Waterfall-Kanter (Director of Development), a second generation Tucsonan, returns to ATC having served as Associate Director of Development in the late 1990s. Other organizations that have benefited from Julia’s expertise include Arizona Opera, Tucson Jewish Community Center and Social Venture Partners. Julia and her husband, Brain Kanter, (whom she met while traipsing around the world with Up With People) are proud parents of two teenage girls. Sue DeBenedette (Director of Marketing) joins the ATC team after many years in marketing in the record business, performing arts and public media. In her own words, “Sue has a crazy passion for connecting people to live performances and is thrilled to help take ATC to new heights in its next 50 years, should she live long enough.” John Geertsen (Company Manager) comes to ATC after a seven-year tenure at Pioneer Theatre in Salt Lake City. John started his career in television (MTV/VH1) and then moved into the world of theatre, first as an equity stage manager with more than a decade of experience then transitioning into the admin- istrative sphere. If you knew the extent of his responsibilities in taking care of all of the artists during the season, you would be astonished at his constant level-headed demeanor laced with a wry sense of humor. Julia, Sue, John all bring deep knowledge and experience but most importantly a desire to take on a role in which they can have a significant impact on the organization’s growth and its service to the commu- nity. They join an already impressive team, ensuring that ATC lives up to the confidence our loyal audi- ence and donors have in us to continue to provide the state of Arizona with theatre of the finest quality available across the nation. And to add to the good news for the month, I am thrilled that you are here with us to experience David Ivers’ directorial debut at Arizona Theatre Company. It’s something I’ve been eagerly anticipating for over a year. I think we’re in for a real treat. As the year begins, so may it continue.
