RECOVERING MAC OS 10.7 (Lion)

INSTALLING 10.7 (Lion) from a USB Key or Burned DVD

In previous versions of OS X, iLife and Mac OS X were restorable from separate optical discs contained in the packaging with the computers. The two products are preinstalled together when purchasing new computers.

With the advent of Mac OS X Lion and the diskless distribution model of Mac OS X and Mac OS X applications through the Mac , optical restoration media is no longer included within the packaging of Macintosh computers.

Snow Leopard OS X installers have also removed the option to “clean install” since they are expected to be run as an upgrade in-place on top of previous versions of the . The only way to 'clean install' OS X Snow Leopard or OS X Lion is to perform a format to the disk being installed upon, at which point the installer will simply install a clean version of the entire OS.

If performing such a “clean install”, the USB Key with the OS X Installer is simply one part of the solution - enabling installation of OS X and nothing more. OS X does include iTunes as part of the base operating system, but the remaining components of iLife '11 (iMovie, GarageBand, and iPhoto) are available as digital downloads from within the or as a separate installer from a previously acquired iLife '11 installation DVD. To obtain these products from the Mac App Store there is a cost of $14.99 each for every unit that it is to be installed (see below for District AppleID Information). Additionally, iWeb and iDVD are no longer components of iLife starting with iLife 11. If you wish to install them on a 10.7 computer, you may still use the iLife 09 installers.

When a Macintosh computer arrives out-of-the-box with Mac OS X Lion and iLife preinstalled you will be building on top of previously installed iLife 11. The setups of the OS and iLife are not tied to the Mac App Store and you will run Software Update to update the OS and applications.

If you perform a “clean install” from the USB Key or a DVD burned from the USB Key, once you're in the , you'll notice that the Mac app store indicates three updates. When you launch the Mac app store for the first time, you will be prompted to adopt the three iLife apps (GarageBand, iMovie, and iPhoto) with a valid AppleID. This should always be the District AppleID.

The first created admin account is prompted to 'adopt' the three preinstalled iLife apps (iMovie, GarageBand, and iPhoto) in the Mac App Store with you School/Department AppleID. Doing so enables re-download and/or updates to the Apps from the App store by accessing the store history against the associated AppleID. When ETS has made an image of each model for distribution through Bell Techlogix, the first local user account created is the LAN Administrator account that is created for the site-based technical support staff.

Please refer to the ETS Service Desk | Digital Devices website for more information on purchasing through the Mac App Store and obtaining the District AppleID. http://www.broward.k12.fl.us/servicedesk/digital_devices/index.html
