JOSEPH CES Full day kindergarten will be back on at St. Joseph Catholic Elementary School this fall after all, following a decision made Monday by the York Catholic District School Board (YCDSB). The Board of Trustees approved the move following an outcry from local parents. According to a statement released by the YCDSB, the full-day kindergarten program will be back on track in time for the first day of school, scheduled for September 2, but how long it will be in place remains to be seen. “[Full Day Kindergarten] will be in place until St. Joseph offers Single Track French Immersion only,” said the Board in a statement. “Parents with children born in 2009 and 2010 are welcome to register for Full-Day Kindergarten with priority being given to siblings of students currently registered at St. Joseph.” Registration is ongoing, with applications being accepted at the YCDSB (320 Bloomington Road West, Aurora) through August 21. Council will dedicate the ice pad at the ALFC in Ms. Sherin’s memory later this year. “I think it is a most fitting tribute,” said Mayor Geoffrey Dawe. “Judy was known for being able to book 25 hours out of 24 hours of ice time, so she was extremely good at balancing the needs and desires of the various teams and groups.” Ms. Sherin died on June 21 after a brief illness. She was 64. Her husband, Terry, summed up the honour in two words, one of which is printable: “Amazing!”

As a citizen of Aurora for 10 years, and as someone who is concerned with development in Aurora, I felt compelled to write a letter and implore my fellow Aurorans to wake up out of their stupor and speak out against unrestricted development in the 2C lands. Have only I seen what is happening along St. John’s Sideroad and Leslie Street? A large part of our tree canopy has been slashed and burned for more houses. With a great sense of irony did I read the article from last week’s Auroran in which Susan Walmer says, in an attempt to be kind, that new owners of these homes “want to live beside nature and conservation, but that is a principle which needs to be protected.” Housing developers, several of them, purchased land in a beautiful, undeveloped natural area of our town. They then proceeded to chop down each and every mature tree that they were permitted to, raze the land, drive out all wildlife to parts unknown, to build box-like homes, energy guzzlers all, due to the lack of canopy shading them. Thousands of extra bodies, hundreds of cars, and for all of this, we lost so much. For this, the developers will profit greatly. What is the benefit to us? I used to be proud that Aurora was so green, so conscious of overdevelopment. I moved from Richmond Hill and I witnessed the devastation of development and sprawl there; how could I imagine that no one would say no to development money here as well? The impassioned letters from environmental leaders have dried up, their words falling against the brick wall that is Council. People who used to champion our trail system have ceded. Where does that leave us now? I am not sure who owns the responsibility for allowing this destructive development to stain our town. To all of those who have witnessed and agonized over this development, speak up! Write a letter, attend a council meeting. The next vendor I’d like to introduce is Marnie Parkin (and husband Gord) PUBLIC NOTICE from Aurora. They own The Bear’s Den, which is the home of warm socks and more created on an antique circular knitting machine. The business came into being when they were living in Oakville and came upon the machine in the late 1980’s. That first machine was a 1924 Canadian Autoknitter manufactured In Toronto. They now have a new reproduced Erlbacher Gearhart Knitting Machine, the first in Canada, manufactured in 2011 in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. The business grew from making long tubes of knit fabric in the beginning. They travelled to Rochester, NY to meet someone they found on the internet to learn the intricacies of the machine. They attended conferences across the United States to learn more techniques and skills. They went from not knowing anyone else in Ontario who had one of these machines to organizing an annual convention in September with attendees from across Canada and the United States. The family all received hand cranked socks and when they moved to Aurora, they decided to widen their circle to include the Farmers’ GOING OUT Market. They joined us initially at the Indoor Market and have now become a part of the Outdoor Market, too. They also do lectures and demos for guilds, historical societies and other interested groups. Their socks are made from high quality yarns of alpaca, merino, superwash wool, etc. They also have wool-free yarn such as bamboo and cotton for those who cannot wear wool. They offer socks of various styles and OF BUSINESS designs. A pair of lace patterned socks may take up to 35 hours to complete and an eye for detail and patience is required. Their inventory has grown from socks to include mitts, scarves and hats with more items being added from time to time. Marnie and Gord’s motto is “the Bear’s Den is keeping your feet warm and cozy”. They have enjoyed being part of the Market and have met many new friends there. They invite you to come by their booth to see the wonderful machine and ask any questions. They would like to thank their customers for their continued support. The Bear’s Den will next be at the Market on August 9 to be followed by visits on August 23, September 13 and October 11, our final day this year. The next Special Event at the Farmers’ Market takes place on August 2, when we celebrate Seniors’ Day.
