PR Prestigious Chilean Mathematician Carlos Conca Visits Prestigious Chilean mathematician Carlos Conca visits BCAM ! Conca has received, amongst others, the Exact Sciences National Award in Chile and is a pioneer in applied mathematics. He has solved problems in fields such as mining and biochemistry. ! The researcher is due to come to the BCAM as part of the collaboration agreement between the Basque company and the Centre for Mathematical Modelling in Chile, which he directs. Bilbao, 2012 - On July 3rd, the Basque Centre for Applied Mathematics, BCAM, will be welcoming Carlos Conca, the prestigious head of the Centre for Mathematical Modelling of the College of Physical Sciences and Mathematics at the University of Chile, a benchmark centre for mathematics in Chile. Professor Conca's visit to the BCAM is part of the agreement collaboration that both organisations signed in 2010. Carlos Conca won the Exact Sciences National Award in Chile in 2003, has a PhD in Applied Mathematics from the Pierre and Marie Curie University in Paris, is an Honorary Doctor at the University of Metz (France), and won the Manuel Noriega Morales Award in Exact Sciences from the Organisation of American States (OAS). The Chilean researcher is a world renowned expert in the field of Applied Mathematics and has managed to solve industrial and domestic problems through differential equations. His most important contribution is the establishment and development of a new mathematical theory, internationally known as the Bloch decomposition, which has been applied to different fields in Physics and Engineering. Conca, who has trained several generations of students, is a pioneer in Applied Mathematics in his country, and his work has solved many practical problems. For example, in the field of mining he discovered a mathematical model that shows ground permeability before extracting copper, thanks to which the profitability of its extraction can be studied. He has also contributed to reduce the environmental damage of industrial processes and has analysed biochemical and cellular dynamics phenomena from a mathematical point of view. Gorbea, the Basque link with Chile The list of illustrious names at the College of Physical Sciences and Mathematics at the University of Chile, where the Centre for Mathematical Modelling, led by Carlos Conca, is situated, includes the name of a Basque man who is as unknown to his homeland as he is remembered in the South American country. This man is engineer and military man Andrés Antonio de Gorbea, born in Menagarai, Álava, in 1792, founder and first dean of said college. Gorbea was an outstanding student in the Nobles de Vergara Seminary and took part in the Spanish Peninsular War after the Napoleonic invasion. Years later, when he was lecturing in Toledo, he had to go into exile in London because of political persecution. While he was living there, Gorbea met the Minister Plenipotentiary of Chile in the UK, who hired him to work as a lecturer in the only university there was back then in Chile. He developed his career in Chile and helped to undertake some of the most important public works in the country. Gorbea was the first head of the College of Civil Engineers in Chile, and the founder and first dean of the College of Physical Sciences and Mathematics, opened in 1842. Carlos Conca es Premio Nacional de Ciencias Exactas del país sudamericano en 2003, Doctor en Matemáticas Aplicadas por la Universidad Pierre et Marie Curie de París, Doctor Honoris Causa por la Universidad de Metz (Francia), y ha recibido el premio Manuel Noriega Morales en Ciencias Exactas, que otorga la Organización de Estados Americanos (OEA). El investigador chileno es un experto mundialmente reconocido en el campo de las matemáticas aplicadas y ha logrado a través de ecuaciones diferenciales solucionar problemas industriales y domésticos. Su contribución más importante es haber establecido y desarrollado una nueva teoría matemática, conocida internacionalmente como Análisis de Bloch, que ha encontrado importantes aplicaciones en distintas áreas de la física y en ingeniería. Conca, que ha formado a generaciones de estudiantes, es un pionero de la matemática aplicada en su país, y sus trabajos han resuelto varios problemas prácticos. Por ejemplo, en el ámbito de la minería descubrió un modelo matemático que permite conocer la permeabilidad del suelo antes de extraer el cobre, lo que permite estudiar la rentabilidad de su extracción. También ha contribuido a disminuir el daño ambiental de procesos industriales y ha analizado desde el punto de vista matemático fenómenos bioquímicos y de dinámica celular. Gorbea, la conexión vasca La Facultad de Ciencias Físicas y Matemáticas de la Universidad de Chile, a la que pertenece el Centro de Modelamiento Matemático que dirige Carlos Conca, cuenta entre sus nombre más ilustres con el de un vasco tan desconocido en su tierra de origen como recordado en el país sudamericano.     I - INTRODUÇÃO O IMPA , criado em 1952 no âmbito do CNPq e hoje parte do Ministério da Ciência e Tecnologia, tem como atividades principais: 1. Realização de Pesquisas Matemáticas e Aplicações. 2. Difusão do Conhecimento Matemático 3. Formação de Novos Pesquisadores e Professores para as Universidades 4. Desenvolvimento de Projetos de Melhoria do Ensino de Matemática em todos os níveis. Essas atividades visam situar nosso país na vanguarda do conhecimento matemático, objetivo essencial para a prosperidade da Sociedade. De fato, não se pode almejar independência, bem-estar e progresso sem que se possua uma tecnologia criativa e inovadora. Esta, por sua vez, só existirá como conseqüência de um avançado grau de desenvolvimento científico e na base de tal desenvolvimento encontra-se indubitavelmente a matemática. O IMPA tornou-se nos últimos trinta anos um centro de vanguarda no Brasil e na América Latina, tanto pela excelência de sua pesquisa como pela formação de jovens cientistas e na difusão de matemática, merecendo amplo reconhecimento nacional e internacional por seu trabalho. Mais recentemente, a partir das áreas da matemática em que tem atuado, vem crescendo o número de projetos de aplicações a outras áreas da Ciência ou de interesse do setor produtivo. A ação do IMPA nas linhas básicas de suas atividades muito o aproxima das universidades brasileiras atuando para seu pleno desenvolvimento na área da matemática. Sua contribuição às universidades e outros centros científicos, têm sido feita através de seu programa de formação de pesquisadores e pessoal docente de alto nível, dos programas de pós-doutorado e de pesquisadores visitantes, dos Colóquios Brasileiros de Matemática e da publicação de textos primorosos em todos os níveis desde o ensino secundário até a ponta da pesquisa, passando pela coleção de livros Matemática Universitária destinada à melhoria do ensino universitário, como também do acesso à sua excelente biblioteca e da ampla colaboração de seus pesquisadores a outras instituições brasileiras.

We prove that, because of the incompress- ibility constraint, the Bloch eigenvalues, as functions of the Bloch frequency ξ, are not continuous at the origin. Nevertheless, when ξ goes to zero in a fixed direction, we exhibit a new limit spectral problem for which the eigenvalues are directionally differentiable. Finally, we present an analogous study for the Bloch wave decomposition for a periodic perforated domain. 1. Introduction and main results. The method of Bloch wave decomposition (or Floquet decomposition) is well known for reducing the problem of solving the Schr¨odinger equation in an infinite periodic medium to a family of simpler Schr¨odinger equations posed in a single periodicity cell and parametrized by the so-called Bloch frequency [9], [10], [17], [23].

The limit behavior of the solutions of Signorini's type-like problems in periodically perfo- rated domains with period " is studied. The main feature of this limit behaviour is the existence of a critical size of the perforations that separates different emerging phenomena as " 0. In the critical case, it is shown that Signorini's problem converges to a problem associated to a new! operator which is the sum of a standard homogenized operator and an extra zero order term (\strange term") coming from the geometry; its appearance is due to the special size of the holes. The limit problem captures the two sources of oscillations involved in this kind of free boundary-value problems, namely, those arising from the size of the holes and those due to the periodic inhomogeneity of the medium. The main ingredient of the method used in the proof is an explicit construction of suitable test functions which provide a good understanding of the interactions between the above mentioned sources of oscillations.
