Club Root Policy Review 2012 By Art Preachuk, Ag Services Manager

The Red Deer County Policy on the Control of Clubroot Disease in Canola calls for a yearly review. At the last Ag Service Board Meeting January 10, 2013, an amendment to guideline # 5 was recommended to Council and subsequently carried. Since more effective Clubroot resistant varieties have been introduced to the market place, and the levels of Clubroot found in Red Deer County so far have been minimal, the Board felt that the time period for restricting infected fields could be reduced if resistant varieties were used. Guideline #5 now reads: The notice will prohibit the growth of canola, mustard or any other susceptible crop to Clubroot for a period of up to five years, considerations may be given for the use of Resistant varieties. For a full review of the Policy see our web site http://rdcounty.ca/Agriculture and discover more related information.

Online Seed Mixes Can Cost You “Big Time” Labels do not always include a full list of the seeds enclosed and you may have bought yourself a weedy mess that could take years to clean up! And who needs to spend more time on weeds? Even with the snow whirling around many gardeners are already gearing up for the spring season by sowing seeds indoors to be ready for the freshly thawed ground. Seeding time brings another opportunity for gardeners to educate themselves on problem plants in their area. With online resources being an ever-growing source of previously unavailable plants, many people may unknowingly be spreading exotic, invasive plants into an area where they wouldn’t normally be able to reach on their own. The biggest issue regarding wildflower mixes is that many products don’t list the species of seeds they contain. In this case even someone familiar with the listed weeds could not make an informed decision on safe mixes. The safest choice in this case is to simply leave that particular mix and make your own using native plant seeds that are often available separately. This can easily be done since many of the plants that are native to your area are available as garden varieties (coneflower, blanket flower, black eyed Susan, sunflower, bergamot, mint, columbine). Also ensure that once seeds have been sown that only the planted seeds are what germinate and develop as weed seeds can easily be in contaminated seed packets or soil. The best way to do this would be to compare the developing foliage to reference material which can often be found online. In summary ensure that the seeds listed in the mix are not weed seeds and consider assembling your own wildflower mix from available garden varieties. 74194E3 Red Deer County News MARCH 2013 PAGE 14

Grow a Garden in 2013 Springbrook Community Garden Plots Available Now!

The Springbrook Community Garden is looking to build on a successful first season and expand in year two. The 2012 season saw 28 of the 112 plots being rented out in the Neighborhood Garden, 1300 pounds of food donated to the Food Bank from the Community Plot and 6 youth active in the Youth Garden. The 2013 season was officially kicked off on February 12 with the first meeting taking place at the Springbrook Fire Station. Registration for garden plots opened on February 12 and will continue until the plots are either sold out or it’s too late to plant. Plots remain $15 for 10’x10’ plot or $25 for a 10’x20’ plot. The garden will officially open for the season on May 10 with a garden clean up weekend scheduled for April 20/21. Special guest speakers will be scheduled for mid to late April as well. Volunteers are needed to help with the Community Garden Plot. The Community Garden Plot is a large garden planted, maintained and harvested by volunteers with donated seed and time. The produce goes directly back into the community and to other helping agencies such as Loaves and Fishes and the Red Deer Food Bank which services our area. If you have a green thumb and some spare time we need you! Donations are always appreciated to help the garden grow! We are always looking for donations of seed and garden tools to use in the Community Garden Plot and the Youth Garden Program. Items most in need are rakes, hoes, shovels and any kind of seed. The gardens are very large so there is never too much! For more information on the Springbrook Community Garden call Adrian at 403.350.9533, like us on Facebook at Springbrook Community Garden or come out to Springbrook and check it out. The garden is located just north of the fire station on 34th Ave. Just look for the bright orange shed! Red Deer County News MARCH 2013 PAGE 20
