Whilst the railings nor the bridge itself is listed, it was felt the railings are a key historical feature and every effort should be made to salvage and reuse these where possible. A specialist contractor experienced with historic metal working has been engaged to complete the repairs. Where parts of the railings are damaged beyond reuse, new pieces of metal will unfortunately have to be welded in. However, this will be kept to a minimum and will not be completed unless absolutely necessary.

For the most part, the railings will arrive onsite ready to be fixed to the bridge. However, some fettling will be required, such as bending rails and likely cutting down of posts, (those which could not be entirely salvaged) will be completed on site. Together with the odd bit of site welding and touching up of paintwork. In order to complete the repair a road closure is required. It is currently programmed for the Contractor to start on site on the 1st September. The work should take around 3 weeks to complete. The signed diversion would be from the A4 South through Lockeridge, north west to East Kennet. See the attached plan. I apologise for the short notice regarding the closure and I hope this does not affect any community plans. Advanced signage notifying of the repairs and closure will be onsite in the next week.
