[email protected] P.O. BOX 75, PILGRIM'S REST, 1290 1 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY A Phase 1 Heritage Impact Assessment (HIA) regarding archaeological and other cultural heritage resources was conducted on the footprint for a proposed footbridge at the Elands River, Elandshoek, Mpumalanga Province. The study area is situated on topographical maps 1:50 000, 2530BC BOSHALTE as well as 2530DA NGODWANA, on the farms Lindenau 303JT and Goedgeluk 444JT , which fall within the Mpumalanga Province, under the jurisdiction of the Ehlanzeni district municipality, and Mbombela local municipality. The National Heritage Resources Act, no 25 (1999)(NHRA), protects all heritage resources, which are classified as national estate. The NHRA stipulates that any person who intends to undertake a development, is subjected to the provisions of the Act. The proposed pedestrian footbridge over the Elands River will be approximately 42 meters long and 2.4 meters wide. The client, SHUMA AFRICA PROJECTS in association with Wandima Environmental are proposing four options for a new footbridge to be investigated. The existing footbridge across the Elands River is opposite the Elandshoek Railway Station, next to the N4, between Nelspruit and Waterval Onder. The Elandshoek Railway station played a role in the development of the historic Eastern Railway Line from Maputo (Delagoa Bay) to Pretoria.
