The aim of this project was to find hidden pieces of glass that perhaps not many folk know about and bring them to a wider audience along with accompanying stories from the people who told us about their glass finds. Here is the result; the Glass Stories Trail. It is a circular route and you can start the trail at any point and visit as much or as little of it as you like. There are also suggestions of additional diversions that you can take away from the trail to see other things that, if incorporated into the trail route, would have made it a bit too big to do comfortably. This project has been made possible by the cooperation of the residents involved, Fariha Thomas of YCSA,David Zabiega of Govanhill Housing Association,Heraghty’s Bar, Govanhill Library, The Queen’s Cafe, Queen’s Park Govanhill Parish Church, Bella Napoli, Rachel Kelly, Liz Howard, Mr & Mrs Innes and Craig Smillie. 2 3 YCSA Glass Stories Trail Route Millar & Maxwell Rd Govanhill 02Lang Art Housing Publishers\ Association03 01. The lane running between Dinmont Rd and Durward Ave provides visual Durward Avenue access of the windows from the outside should you not be able to gain entry from a kind resident. These windows provide a good example of the ‘staining’ part of stained glass being painted rather than what we more commonly think of which is leaded glass. This term staining originates with the yellow colour used in these glass panels. A silver compound is painted on to the glass which is then fired in a kiln. Once firing is complete any residual ash/dust is then brushed off to reveal the yellow staining of the glass which by then is completely embedded and cannot be washed or scraped off. Dinmont Road Darnley Gardens 6 7 GLASS STORIES Millar & Lang Art Publishers (now YCSA) 48 Darnley Street, Pollokshields, G41 2SE Open Mon-Fri 9am-3pm Built in 1902 by D.B Dobson, A-Listed Founded in 1903, Millar & Lang published celebration cards e.g. Christmas, birthday etc as well as the 02 once well known National series of postcards. The stained glass was designed by William Gibson Morton for his friend and stained glass artist John C Hall. The stained glass in the internal doors depict the passage of time with Day/Life, Father Time, Father Christmas, Neptune, and Night/Death. It is said that the stained glass refers to the designs of some of their printed cards. A real treasure of a place that needs to be seen to be believed! 8 9 GLASS STORIES Govanhill Housing Association Samaritan House 79 Coplaw Street, G42 7JG Open Mon-Fri 9am-5pm Created in 2007 to commemorate the opening of Samaritan House, HQ of Govanhill Housing Association (it sits in the reception area). 03 It celebrates the lives and values of the people of Govanhill. The Artist was briefed to symbolise community mainstays such as: Townscape/Environment, Shelter/Wellbeing, Community/ Family, Social Harmony, Ethnicity/Culture. Many people were involved in designing/producing the artwork, working with the artist during each stage of the design and development. The individual frames incorporate various elements and references to a range of Govanhill landmarks and points of interest, with the names (and messages of) many of the people involved in its design. Alec Galloway, one of Scotland’s leading stained glass Artists, was responsible for the design and producing the final piece. The artwork was unveiled by George Wylie, the internationally renowned Scottish sculptor and artist. 10 11 GLASS STORIES Govanhill Library 170 Langside Road In the heart of Govanhill, this beautiful building has been enhanced by the addition in 2015/16 of 6 modern 04 stained glass windows. These depict the cultural diversity of Govanhill and were designed by various groups aided by stained glass artist Keira McLean who put their ideas into beautifully colourful permanence. Window 1 - Diversity Windows Project. This window was designed by the Larkfield Centre‘s AGAP Art Group who worked with Govanhill Youth Project and Glasgow Life to create a ‘Memories of Glasgow’ window, taking inspiration from the experiences of the contributors, Glasgow sunsets and Dixon Blazes. Through their art they wanted to convey a sense of community and unity among cultures, celebrating their diversity and fostering appreciation and acceptance of all. 12 13 GLASS STORIES Window 2 - Culture Fusion This was designed by the Asian Women’s Group who wanted to show the contribution that Asian women have made and continue to make to the communities of which they are a part. The vibrant colours are reminiscent of fabric used in saris and shalwar kameez. Words of empowerment are woven through the design reminding us that women and girls form the heart and soul of communities. 2 Window 3 - Graffiti Wall Govanhill Youth Project’s unique contribution was a graffiti wall made of glass, with each brick designed to reflect the youth, energy, personalities and interests of its members. Tagging it has really put their individual stamps on it. 3 14 15 GLASS STORIES Window 4 - Irish Diversity Window The story of Irish immigration is told by the Irish Heritage Foundation in this window. In storyboard style it depicts the journey of Irish people from their 4 homeland to Govanhill starting with the Great Famine. It also shows the contribution that the Irish community have and continue to make to the city of Glasgow. Incorporated into the design are icons of Irish culture such as the Claddagh as well as references to language and dance. Window 5 - Exclusive Colours Fourth year pupils at Hollybrook Academy remind us 5 of the use of colour to express feelings and emotions; its ability to cheer the soul. Included in the artwork are inspirational quotes supporting and following their journey to adulthood. Window 6 - Govanhill People’s History A project that ran alongside this is called the Govanhill People’s History which has a window as well as a trail which can be found at http://govanhillpeopleshistory. com/audio-tour/ 6 16 17 GLASS STORIES Queen’s Cafe 515-517 Victoria Road, G42 8BH Open Mon-Sat 9.30am-9.30pm and Sun 10.30am-9.30pm In 1895 what is now the Queen’s Cafe was just 517 Victoria Road; a confectioners which has been its 05 business ever since - over 120 years! Initially owned by Pietro Pelozi by 1920 it had changed hands and was owned by Antonio Di Marco with a change of ownership seen again by 1930 to Alexander Jaconelli. In the 1940s the shop expanded to include 515 and by 1948 it had changed hands again to Francesca Ianetta (this name changed to Janetta in the 1950s). By the 1970s there had been another change of owner to Adalberto & Mrs M Gargaro. It is currently run by the Ginesis. An image from 1933 showing the stained glass panels in existence can be seen at can be seen at the Mitchell Library. We speculate that it was Alexander Jaconelli that had this work done. Thanks to Rachel Kelly & Kate Keter for providing this information. 18 19 GLASS STORIES McNeill’s 106 Torrisdale St, G42 8ED Open 11am-11.45pm Designed by architect A. Samuel this premises opened in 1965 as 06 the Madeira. It was bought by Celtic footballer Billy McNeill and became McNeill’s. Although no longer owned by him it retains the name. Inside there are a few nice pieces around the door, as well as an addition behind the bar that came from Minsky’s Pizza restaurant after it closed down. 20 21 GLASS STORIES Queen’s Park Govanhill Parish Church 170 Queen’s Drive Jane Haining was a member of Queen’s Park West Parish Church.

  • Mark Ferguson Jane Haining Speech 2021
HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL EVENT 2021 – Mark Ferguson Jane Haining was born in Dunscore, Dumfriesshire on Lochead Farm in 1897. A very intelligent and able young women Jane came to our town of Paisley to work for J.P Coats threadmill, firstly as a Clerk then promoted to Secretary (A senior post in the Mill). Following this Jane spent some time in Glasgow and Manchester before taking up a position as Matron in a girl’s home at the Scottish Mission to the Jews in Budapest. When the NAZIS turned their attention to Hungary Jane was asked to return to Scotland, however she replied “if these children need me in the days of sunshine, how much more do they need me in the days of darkness?”. Jane was later to be arrested by the Gestapo and was charged on 8 counts: That she had worked among the Jews. That she had wept when putting yellow stars on the girls. That she had dismissed her housekeeper, who was an Aryan. That she had listened to the news broadcasts of the BBC. That she had many British visitors. That she was active in politics. That she visited British prisoners of war. That she sent them parcels. She admitted to all the charges except being active in politics. Jane was amongst the first transportations from Hungary to Auschwitz/Birkenau in May 1944. On arrival she was stripped, tattooed with the number 79467 - at the age of 47, disinfected, hair shaved, before being issued with striped clothing and clogs. In Janes last letter to the head of the mission dated a few days before she died referenced her fondness for her beloved Dunscore stating “even here on the way to heaven are mountains”.
