Topic Information Sheet – Renewables last updated 14th July 2011

Information

Renewable energy Renewable energy is derived from natural processes that are replenished constantly. In its various forms, it derives directly from the sun, or from heat generated deep within the earth. Included in the definition is electricity and heat generated from solar, wind, ocean, hydropower, biomass, geothermal resources, and biofuels and hydrogen derived from renewable resources.

Wind power Airflows can be used to run wind turbines. Modern wind turbines range from around 600 kW to 5 MW of rated power, although turbines with rated output of 1.5–3 MW have become the most common for commercial use; the power output of a turbine is a function of the cube of the wind speed, so as wind speed increases, power output increases dramatically. Areas where winds are stronger and more constant, such as offshore and high altitude sites, are preferred locations for wind farms. Typical capacity factors are 20-40%, with values at the upper end of the range in particularly favourable sites.

Hydropower Energy in water can be harnessed and used. Since water is about 800 times denser than air, even a slow flowing stream of water, or moderate sea swell, can yield considerable amounts of energy. There are many forms of water energy: Hydroelectric energy is a term usually reserved for large-scale hydroelectric dams. Micro hydro systems are hydroelectric power installations that typically produce up to 100 kW of power. They are often used in water rich areas as a remote-area power supply (RAPS). Run-of-the-river hydroelectricity systems derive kinetic energy from rivers and oceans without using a dam.

Solar energy Solar energy is the energy derived from the sun through the form of solar radiation. Solar powered electrical generation relies on photovoltaics and heat engines.

Biomass Biomass (plant material) is a renewable energy source because the energy it contains comes from the sun. Through the process of photosynthesis, plants capture the sun's energy.

Biofuel Biofuels include a wide range of fuels which are derived from biomass. The term covers solid biomass, liquid fuels and various biogases.

Geothermal energy Geothermal energy is energy obtained by tapping the heat of the earth itself, both from kilometers deep into the Earth's crust in volcanically active locations of the globe or from shallow depths, as in geothermal heat pumps in most locations of the planet.

Ocean energy Systems to harvest utility-scale electrical power from ocean waves have recently been gaining momentum as a viable technology. The potential for this technology is considered promising, especially on west-facing coasts with latitudes between 40 and 60 degrees.

Islay Energy Trust Islay has frequently been a pioneer for the testing of new renewable energy technology, and projects that utilise heat exchange, photovoltaics, wave and wind have all been developed on Islay: the community swimming pool in the Mactaggart Leisure Centre uses waste heat from the neighbouring Bowmore Distillery, Bruichladdich Distillery uses anaerobic digestion to capture energy from its waste products, roofing slates that incorporate photovoltaic solar panels were used in the development of Ionad Chaluim Chille Ìle, the Gaelic Community Centre, and the Port Mòr community centre is fully equipped with a wind turbine, solar thermal heating and a ground source heat pump. The Limpet Wave Station near Portnahaven has proved to be a successful testbed for wave technology and has been used as a prototype for the much larger station that is planned for Siadar on Lewis. This tradition of green energy projects is set to continue with the proposal for a 10MW tidal energy array in the Sound of Islay. Scotland has over 25% over Europe’s tidal energy potential and some of the best locations are around Islay. http://islayenergytrust.wordpress.com/about/green-islay-renewable-energy- projects/

Here We Are - Cairndow HWA has now set up a community interest company called Our Power, in order to progress with their biomass Woodchipping business. This business will eventually [within 5 years] enable Here We Are to become financially sustainable. Wood provided by Tilhill will be chipped and delivered by Our Power to Lakeland Smolt's

A crucial element in the initiative is, of course, timber:- in Argyll trees grow fast and well. With the Forestry Commission's assistance HWA has negotiated a 5 year contract for the quantity of wood at the moisture content needed by Lakeland and at a price that makes the project viable. The timber will be sourced within a 30 mile radius. HWA now needs to look beyond its one (good sized) customer for others within the same radius. Long distance transportation of timber for chips is not sustainable. http://www.hereweare-uk.com/cairndow/
