Lots of fun at the village Fun Day

It was a bright and breezy day on Saturday 28th July when the village came out to play. There were a whole host of entertainments available. The circus skills area was very popular with all ages. Craft stalls of many types tempted the visitors, There were games to be played with the Scouts and family sports for the more athletic. The cherished cars on show varied from aged Austin 7s, MGs, a Rolls Royce and a Bentley to relatively modern machinery. Dogs of many varieties kept the judge busy all afternoon (see pages 10 and 11 for the results). The refreshments on offer were very popular—they ran out of cake!

4

Of course, at the centre of it all was the Flower Show. There was a wonderful display of flowers, fruit and vegetables. The photographic, craft, cookery and children’s classes were all well supported. See below for the story of the show and a list of cup winners. During the afternoon, the wind increased in strength. Marquees and gazebos were rapidly taken down. One marquee started to collapse and had to be hurriedly evacuated. But, in spite of a spell of some light drizzle, the band played on, the races were run, the dogs were judged and everyone had a great time.

The Flower Show report

At 8.00am on Saturday 28th July in the Village Hall and recreation field, preparations for the annual ‘Village Fun Day and Flower Show’ were well underway. The 93rd Flower Show was being set-up in the Village Hall with so many wonderful entries, including lots of entries from the children in the village. There were also a number of new entrants across the veg, fruit and flower classes which meant numbers were up and there was lots of competition, which was great. The floral art displays, as normal, looked stunning set up against the back of the hall. In the cookery class, we had a good number of entries, from gingerbread cake to (Continued on page 7)

decorated biscuits and coffee cake for the men. The Photography section had over 70 photos and the arts and crafts section was filled with such a variety of entries from painting to needle craft. (See more photos on page 8.) By the time the judges arrived the hall looked amazing, especially with the stunning flower display by Caroline and Derek Taylor, of Kirton Farm Nursery on the hall stage. A special thanks needs to go to everyone involved in setting the day up both inside the show and out on the field, it was very much a village day! Without everyone’s support the show and fun day would not have been such a great success. Lisa Johnson Secretary

Save Our Allotments! WE NEED YOUR HELP A meeting is being arranged to talk to the Winchester Diocese and to try and ‘persuade’ them to stop the sale. The meeting is hopefully going to happen in early September. We need as many villagers as possible, who are opposed to the sale, to come and support us in our fight. Please let us know if you would be interested in attending the meeting, to show the Diocese just how much support there is in the village, to keep the allotments that are over 100 years old! Notice of the date, once confirmed, will be posted on the village notice boards. It will also be listed on the Save Our Allotments Facebook page If you would like to attend, then please send an email to [email protected], and we will send the date as soon as it is confirmed. This may be the last chance we have to try to stop the sale, so please show your support. The Kings Somborne Allotment Association

‘Poppy’ collectors wanted for the 2018 Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal I have had two helpful responses from my appeal last month. However, volunteers are still needed for Romsey Road and Compton Estate. So, if you feel you could help and give some of your time to this worth-while charity, it would be very much appreciated. I am also asking if there are any confident trumpet or bugle players out there who would be willing to help and play on Sunday 11th November for the Service of Remembrance at the War Memorial. Marquee Markets 2018 August brought the return of the ever popular Marquee Markets in the churchyard. Cubs take a well-earned break Commemorative peal to be rung On September 1st, at approximately 2.30pm, a Hampshire team of bell ringers will be ringing a peal at our church. This is part of the bell ringers’ commemoration of the Hampshire village men, and women, who died in WW1. As our own village band is not yet capable of ringing a peal, we are grateful for this opportunity to commemorate our parish fallen. A peal on 6 bells takes approximately 2 hours 45 minutes and needs complete concentration, so it would be helpful if the ringers had no interruptions whilst ringing. Sue Spurling

The final challenges were based at the pub, where origami skills were put to the test, with Jude judging the ‘Best Folded Napkin’ competition. Much hilarity ensued from start to finish as cheating and bribery had been given the ‘ok’ before the start. The photo challenges proved a huge hit with challengers and judges alike. The winning team were ‘The Famous Five’. Christmas Fair 17th November 2018 This year's Christmas Fair will be held in the Village Hall from 2.00pm to 4.00pm on 17th November. We do hope you, your family and friends will come along and not only have a lovely afternoon but also help us to raise money for our church. We have several of our regular, popular stalls plus some new ones and of course teas and cakes will be available. Please put the date in your diaries.

An appeal from the WI As part of our Centenary year, we hope to have an exhibition of photographs and mementoes of our W.I. Do any former members have items that could be included? If you can help, please write your name, in pencil, on the back of photographs, old programmes etc—it would be very helpful in ensuring that they are returned to you. We hope to have a lively and interesting exhibition. It may be possible for the exhibition to be on display in the church during next August. Mary Pollock (388 422)

School and Somborne Society Exhibition

Following the School’s celebrations last November and more recently in Church on Education Sunday a joint Exhibition to celebrate the founding of King’s Somborne School was mounted in the Parish Church throughout August. The picture shows a view of the Timeline and picture boards and Dawes Tapestry in the South Aisle.

An exhibition with demonstrations The Hampshire and Berkshire Guild’s annual visit to Stockbridge has become a welcome highlight of the town’s calendar. Whether an invitation to peruse top- class craft on the doorstep with (whisper it) Christmas in mind, or to find that statement piece to complete a design scheme. Over the weekend of 15th and 16th September (open till 8.00pm on Saturday) some of Britain’s finest potters, cabinet makers, jewellers, glass and metalworkers will be demonstrating their expertise to visitors alongside the exhibition, offering rare insights into their highly skilled work. And, be warned, understanding a little of what makes an artefact beautiful only adds to its appeal... Hampshire & Berkshire Guild www.craftsguild.co.uk

Thank you We would like to thank our friends, neighbours and the entire King's Somborne community for the kindness and support we have received after the sudden death last month of our son Paul. Although we have only been in the village for a short time, the offers of help have been overwhelming, and we are immensely grateful to everyone. Whilst it is difficult to comprehend that a young, fit and seemingly healthy young man is no longer with us, we take comfort from the many cards, letters, and ‘chats over a cup of tea’ that have helped us through the most difficult time of our lives. We would also like to extend our grateful thanks to all who attended the celebration of Paul’s life at Test Valley Crematorium and afterwards at the Crown Inn and to everyone who contributed to the Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) charity in memory of Paul. Another Vicar has the last word I’m grateful to be given the opportunity to give this “last word”. This summer is actually the twenty fifth anniversary of my first visiting King’s Somborne, as it was back in 1993, after meeting a certain young lady on holiday in Devon that I plucked up courage to ring her at her parent’s home in the village before she returned to London. I came over from Fawley, where I had recently become the curate, to Bourne House that Sunday afternoon in July and the following April we were married in your church! So King’s Somborne, where of course my parents-in-law, Norman and Amy, still live, has a special place in my heart as it does for Christine. We are now in West Wellow and it has been a privilege for me to help out on first Wednesdays during the interregnum. It’s also good to follow on from the letter of last month of my friend and former Andover Deanery colleague, Jill Bentall, who I thought wrote a lovely appreciation of the village and community. Her letter had a summer holiday feel – my short thought concerns the turn of the season and autumn. As any school teacher, or in my case former school teacher, will attest there’s something very evocative about the beginning of September. From the freedom, long days and (especially this year) fine weather of the summer, we come, with some anticipation perhaps, but also excitement to a new season and the challenges it will present. Usually it’s a beautiful time, with the rich colours of the falling leaves. We may look back wistfully to the summer recently passed and Christians sometimes also look back to times when things seemed better. But, as we are reminded robustly by St Paul, we are to look forward in our faith, for there is much to do: Not that I have already… reached the goal, but I press on to make it my own…this one thing I do, forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 3:12-14) May these words inspire us as we move into this new season and all that God has for us in the months ahead. In Somborne and Ashley’s case I pray that this will include particularly the swift appointment of a new vicar to work and live amongst you. God bless you. Chris Pettet, Rector of East and West Wellow and Sherfield English
