  • WHERE ARE THEY NOW? March 2014
WHERE ARE THEY NOW? March 2014 First and foremost, huge congratulations are due to NYMT Producer JEREMY WALKER who has recently been made a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA) in recognition of his "achievements in providing pre-professional education and musical theatre stage experience to young people." This is a signal honour – and richly deserved. (Other Fellows include Dame Judi Dench, Peter Ustinov, Janet Baker, Stephen Hawking and Charles Dickens! Distinguished company!) THE BIG SCREEN IDRIS ELBA (Guys and Dolls, 1990) has been dominating the headlines recently as Nelson Mandela in MANDELA, THE LONG WALK TO FREEDOM. (The NYMT sang for Nelson Mandela in 2002 when he came to London to launch the MANDELA FOUNDATION UK . One of the busiest in the business at the moment must be JIM STURGESS (The Ragged Child, 1993) who currently has no less than five films in the pipeline – THE LION’S SHARE, THE BIG SHOT, LONDON FIELDS, ELECTRIC SLICK and ELIZA GRAVES. Equally busy is BEN BARNES (The Ballad of Salomon Pavey, 1996; Bugsy Malone, 1997; The Ragged Child, 1999; The Dreaming, 2002) who has three films in the offing, GOD ONLY KNOWS, ZENDOG and the spectacular SEVENTH SON. Also busy is SHERIDAN SMITH (Pendragon, 1994; Tin Pan Ali, 1995; Bugsy Malone, 1996; The Kissing Dance, 1998), hilarious in POWDER ROOM also giving a fine performance in THE 7.39 on BBC 1 as well as packing them in at The Noel Coward Theatre as Titania. Watch out for her on television later this year as Cilla Black. Following his fine work in LES MISERABLES, EDDIE REDMAYNE (The Ballad of Salomon Pavey, 1999) has two new films about to emerge –THEORY OF EVERYTHING and JUPITER ASCENDING while one of the special guests at the Christmas Concert in December, TOBY JONES (The Leaving of Liverpool, 1981) is also in GOD ONLY KNOWS with Ben Barnes, as well as in CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER and SERENA.

  • Whovians Can Get Their Fix with a 'Doctor Who
Whovians can get their fix with a ‘Doctor Whoʼ class at Syracuse University - The Washington Post 2/17/18, 432 PM The Washington Post Morning Mix Whovians can get their fix with a ‘Doctor Who’ class at Syracuse University By Soraya Nadia McDonald November 4, 2014 A Syracuse professor of digital and social media is offering a class based on the long- running British science fiction series “Doctor Who.” Professor Anthony Rotolo plans to take an exhaustive look at the wildly popular British series, which started in 1963 as a children’s show and was relaunched in 2005. How’s this hypothetical incentive for class participation: At Syracuse, if you answer a trivia question about “Doctor Who” correctly, you could net yourself a 3-D printed TARDIS or a miniature Dalek (one that won’t destroy everything in its path, of course). For non-Whovians: The Dalek are a particularly pernicious alien race set on destroying everything. They hate Doctor Who. The TARDIS is the vehicle, disguised as a 1960s London police call box, the Doctor uses to travel through space and time. Also worth knowing: The Doctor is able to die and regenerate himself in a different body, a detail that’s allowed 12 actors to play him in a 50-year span. The show is currently on its 12th Doctor, Peter Capaldi. ADVERTISING https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2014/11/04/whov…a-doctor-who-class-at-syracuse-university/?utm_term=.cba40a906a4b Page 1 of 3 Whovians can get their fix with a ‘Doctor Whoʼ class at Syracuse University - The Washington Post 2/17/18, 432 PM According to Rotolo’s course description: Students will consider and reflect on how Doctor Who has reached audiences from children and families to young adults and lifelong viewers through a wide array of broadcast, print and digital media, as well as describe how Doctor Who has applied elements of many media genres — sci-fi, horror, action, comedy and many others — to form a style that is unique to the series.

  • Out and About with the Vic-Wells
President: Vice President: No. 480 - September 2012 Simon Russell Beale CBE Nickolas Grace Price 50p when sold Out and About with the Vic-Wells Shakespeare at the British Museum There will be a Vic-Wells visit to the British Museum’s current exhibition Shakespeare: staging the world on Monday, 1st October 2012. The exhibition provides a new insight into the emerging role of London as a world city four hundred years ago, interpreted through the innovative perspective of Shakespeare’s plays - and features over 190 objects. The exhibition creates a unique dialogue between these objects drawn from the museum’s collection. Great paintings, rare manuscripts, maps, drawings, armour, coins and other intriguing objects are all examined through the lens of Shakespeare’s plays. Shakespeare: staging the world also explores the theatre-going experience at the time. The newly built playhouses were situated in the suburbs: Bankside was an area with a dangerous and notorious reputation. The theatres needed to attract large numbers of playgoers and so performances had to appeal to a wide spectrum of society, from groundlings to courtiers. Objects excavated from the sites of the Globe and Rose theatres, such as a sucket fork for sweetmeats and the skull of a bear, illustrate the Southwark of Shakespeare’s day, the cultural world inhabited by the playhouse, which rubbed shoulders with bear-baiting arenas as well as brothels and pubs. The British Museum has produced, working with the Royal Shakespeare Company, a series of new digital interventions which appear throughout the exhibition, allowing visitors to encounter Shakespeare’s words and characters alongside the objects on The Lyte Jewel display.
