The community education work of orchestras and opera companies: principles, practice and problems. Julia Mary Winterson This dissertation is presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. The University of York, Department of Music November 1998 Abstract In 1998 most orchestras and opera companies have an education team; today's large- scale, high-profile projects mounted by orchestras and opera companies appear to be developing into a full-scale industry on their own. Although music companies today present their educational activities as having a new approach, this originality is not borne out by the evidence; most of the ideas fundamental to its practice were presented nearly thirty years ago. In the absence of sustained critical debate, this thesis analyses and questions some of the claims made by education teams. It does not attempt to be a comprehensive survey of the projects taking place; rather its purpose is to evaluate them, to put them in educational, musical and social contexts and to examine the underpinning theoretical and intellectual issues. However, it does provide new and wide-ranging data on a broader scale than that of previous research. The research demonstrates that many of the objectives of music organisations are not being met. It appears that visiting musicians can be a welcome and enjoyable diversion from normal school routines and that, at times, they can have a profound effect on individual participants, but there is little evidence to suggest that the work helps with the school music curriculum or that it shares the resources of the organisations involved and develops the concert-going audience. -

The Players Alison Alty (oboe and cor anglais) Alison Alty studied at Manchester University with Malcolm Messiter and Guildhall School of Music with Anthony Camden. She was principal cor anglais with the European Community Youth Orchestra touring Europe and India. Alison now combines the raising of three children with a busy freelance career performing with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, London Philharmonic, Royal Philharmonic, Philharmonia and BBC Symphony Orchestras, English National Opera and the London Mozart Players. -

The series started in 2008 to celebrate the ensemble's 40th birthday, and the works created for it have enduring relevance as introductions to the best new music of our time. Anna Meredith Axeman for bassoon and electronics When a friend asked me to write a piece for solo bassoon I was a bit stuck as I like the bassoon but always found it a bit too dignified somehow. After a few drinks and an experimental session with electric guitar pedals we decided the way forward was to unleash the bassoon from its rock closet and try and write a piece that made the bassoon sound as much like an 1980s guitar-god as possible. AM Mark Bowden Parable for saxophone Parable is a short work for solo alto saxophone. The idea for the piece came from the legend of the Gordian Knot in which Alexander the Great, unable to untie the rope, slices the knot in half with his sword, thus ensuring his future good fortune. The piece doesn’t depict this story in a literal sense, but explores a cyclical pattern of notes that is periodically ‘cut’ by interjecting material. -

Please see www.messiter.com for details. The Players Jan Winstone (harpsichord) leads an eclectic professional life as a pianist and keyboard player. Having studied at Reading University (with a major interest in mediaeval music), and accompaniment at the Royal Northern of College of Music with John Wilson and David Lloyd, and at the Royal Academy of Music with Geoffrey Pratley and Aaron Shorr, she is a regular player in London’s West End shows including “Billy Elliot”, “Wicked” and “Jersey Boys”. She worked on “Coram Boy” for the National Theatre as Assistant Musical Director and performs in vocal, instrumental and chamber music recitals and as a soloist with orchestra, with engagements in the UK, Italy and Japan. -

Please see www.messiter.com for details. The Players Kim Murphy (contra bassoon) decided to become a bassoon player when she got into the RNCM junior dept. at the age of 15. While she was there she was taught by Graham Salvage, Ed Warren and William Waterhouse. She then was accepted to the Guildhall school of Music and drama where she studied with Graham Sheen, John Orford, Meyrick Alexander and also did a year of Baroque bassoon with Jeremy Ward. Since then Kim has played with many of the countries orchestras and west end shows on bassoon and contra including BBC Symphony orchestra, BBC Concert Orchestra, Royal Opera House, Welsh National Opera, English National Opera, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Kim also performs at the moment in the west end with Oliver and Phantom of the Opera. -
