Parigi con Carlotta Grisi e Lucien Petipa nei ruoli principali. La scena qui presentata corrisponde al momento in cui il guardiacaccia, Hilarion, visita la tomba di Giselle e le Villi (vendicatrici anime di fanciulle morte prima di sposarsi) lasciano le tombe per danzare, circondano Hilarion e lo fanno ballare fino alla morte. Il duca Albrecht, anch’esso caduto preda delle Villi, danza con Giselle, la quale, con il suo amore, lo salva. Questa versione coreografica a firma di Alicia Alonso è entrata a far parte del repertorio dell’Opéra di Parigi, dell’Opera di Vienna, del Balletto del Teatro © N. Reyes © N.     Cuban National Ballet on tour of Europe The Cuban National Ballet Company –BNC-, directed by ballet legend, Alicia Alonso, began a three month tour of Spain, Italy and France set to wind up in July. The Cuban ballet ensemble will return to stages where audiences have enjoyed its performances before and dance on new theaters, such as Pleyel in Paris. BNC is touring Madrid, Andalucía, Barcelona and cities in the Basque Country, while in Italy, the famous Cuban company is scheduled to perform in Torino and Ravena. The Cuban versions of classics such as The Nutcracker, Giselle and Don Quixote are included on the renowned troupe’s presentations with which they have received both critics and audiences acclaim worldwide in previous tours. BNC and Alonso obtained the Grand Prix de la Ville de Paris Award for its performance of Giselle at the Fourth International Dance Festival held at Les Champs Ellisée Theater in 1966. The company is also dancing the show The Magic of Dance that compiles excerpts of 19th century ballet hits, while in France a mixed bill of classical and contemporary pas de deux is included in its program. The main roles are performed by premier dancers Viengsay Valdés, Sadaise Arencibia, Anette Delgado, Grettel Morejón and Dani Hernández; first soloist Rafael Quenedit; soloists Patricio Revé Raúl Abreu and Ariel Martínez; principal Ginett Moncho and choriphee Claudia García, supported by its famous corps de ballet. In Paris the Cuban company will be joined by Cuban dancers Joel Carreño and Yolanda Correa, current stars with the Norwegian National Ballet; Cuba’s Osiel Gouneau, principal with the Munich Ballet in Germany, and Acosta Danza company dancer Luis Valle.

    Ballet’s Influence on the Development of Early Cinema and the Technological Modification of Dance Movement Jennifer Ann Zale Abstract Dance is a form of movement that has captured the attention of cinema spectators since the medium’s inception. The question of the compatibility between dance, particularly ballet, and cinema has been fiercely debated since the silent era and continues to be discussed by scholars and practitioners in the twenty-first century. This topic was of particular interest in the Russian cinema industry of the 1910s, in a country where ballet was considered to be among the most prestigious of the art forms. This article explores ballet’s influence on the development of silent cinema in pre-revolutionary Russia and the ways in which cinema technologies alter dance as an art form. This topic is discussed through the career of Vera Karalli, Imperial ballerina of the Bolshoi Theater turned Russia's first film star. I question the legitimacy of the argument that film can only preserve a disfigured image of a dancer’s body in motion. Many critics of Karalli’s cinematic performance fail to take into consideration the direct influence of the cinematography, editing style, and overall conditions of the Khanzhonkov Studio of 1914-1917 on the finished product. This article explores the cinematic rendition of the moving (dancing) body, taking into account the technology responsible for producing the final image. The study draws upon primary sources found in Moscow’s libraries and archives. Priest A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of History – Doctor of Philosophy 2016 ABSTRACT THE BOLSHOI MEETS BOLSHEVISM: MOVING BODIES AND BODY POLITICS, 1917- 1934 By Douglas M. Priest Following the Russian Revolution in 1917, the historically aristocratic Bolshoi Ballet came face to face with Bolshevik politics for the first time. Examining the collision of this institution and its art with socialist politics through the analysis of archival documents, published material, and ballets themselves, this dissertation explains ballet’s persisting allure and cultural power in the early Soviet Union. The resulting negotiation of aesthetic and political values that played out in a discourse of and about bodies on the Bolshoi Theater’s stage and inside the studios of the Bolshoi’s Ballet School reveals Bolshevik uncertainty about the role of high culture in their new society and helped to define the contentious relationship between old and new in the 1920s. Furthermore, the most hostile attack on ballet coming from socialists, anti- formalism, paradoxically provided a rhetorical shield for classical ballet by silencing formalist critiques. Thus, the collision resulted not in one side “winning,” but rather in a contested environment in which dancers embodied both tradition and revolution. Finally, the persistence of classical ballet in the 1920s, particularly at the Ballet School, allowed for the Bolshoi Ballet’s eventual ascendancy to world-renowned ballet company following the second World War. This work illuminates the Bolshoi Ballet’s artistic work from 1917 to 1934, its place and importance in the context of early Soviet culture, and the art form’s cultural power in the Soviet Union.

She graduated from the Bolshoi Ballet School in 1905. She was a beautiful and dramatically expressive dancer and made her debut at the age of 19 as Tsar-Maiden in Humpbacked Horse. She soon became a principal dancer in such roles like Aurora (Sleeping Beauty), Medora (Le Corsaire), Kitri (Don Quixote), Swanilda (Coppelia), Raymonda (Raymonda), Nikia (La Bayadere) and Odette-Odile (Swan Lake). Her partner in many performances was Mikhail Mordkin. She was married to a wealthy Moscow capitalist A.K. Ushkov and left Russia in 1921. Their mansion at Prechistenka 20 in Moscow soon became home of the Isadora Duncan Dance School.

Con la interpretación de dos de las obras más emblemáticas de la compañía: Carmen y Las sílfides, el Ballet Nacional de Cuba (BNC) que dirige la prima ballerina assoluta Alicia Alonso, quiso también recordar el aniversario 70 del ingreso del líder histórico de la Revolución Fidel Castro a la Universidad de La Habana y saludar el venidero X Congreso de la Unión de Jóvenes Comunistas (UJC). También se presentó Celeste en la escena del Teatro Nacional, la aplaudida coreografía que fuera estrenada en el pasado Festival Internacional de Ballet de La Habana... Al igual que entonces, la obra tuvo en la primera bailarina Viengsay Valdés a su principal protagonista. Solo que esta vez defendió la hermosa pieza que ideara la afamada creadora Annabelle López Ochoa, entregándole una emoción muy particular. Y es que, como las otras grandes figuras que la han antecedido, la Miembro de Honor de la Asociación Hermanos Saíz (AHS) siente idéntica cercanía por la organización fundada por Julio Antonio Mella y que reconoce como eterno presidente a José Antonio Echeverría.

    Introduction The World Ballet Festival Returns for Summer 2018 From the 14th World Ballet FestivalPhoto: Kiyonori Hasegawa For more than 40 years now, the most talented and renowned dancers have come to Tokyo from around the world to perform in the World Ballet Festival, which will once again be held this summer. When it was first introduced in 1976 under the leadership of Tadatsugu Sasaki, it was very rare for the star ballerinas of different companies or countries to share a stage. Its first edition caused an international sensation by bringing together three legends, Margot Fonteyn from the UK, Maya Plisetskaya from the Soviet Union and Alicia Alonso from Cuba. Since then stars such as Jorge Donn, Patrick Dupond, Sylvie Guillem, Alessandra Ferri, Manuel Legris and Vladimir Malakhov have become regular participants, bringing the audiences to a storm of excitement every time and inspiring them to watch and compare all the dancers perform. Promoted by Alonso, ballet took firm roots in Cuba in the following decades, particularly after the Cuban Revolution (1959). This dissertation integrates the methods of historical research, postcolonial critique and discourse analysis to explore the performative and discursive strategies through which Alonso defined her artistic identity and the collective identity of the Cuban ballet. The present study also examines the historical context of the development of ballet in Cuba, Alonso’s rationale for the practice of ballet on the Island, and the relationship between the Cuban ballet and the European ballet. Alonso defended the legitimacy of Cuban dancers to practice ballet and, in specific, perform European classics such as Giselle and Swan Lake. She opposed the notion that ballet was the exclusive patrimony of Europeans. She also insisted that the cultivation of this dance form on the Island was not an act of cultural colonialism. In her view, the development of ballet in Cuba consisted, instead, of an exploration of a distinctive Cuban voice within this dance form, a reformulation of a European legacy from a postcolonial perspective.

    Alicia Alonso, una Giselle eterna Alicia Alonso, la llegendària ballarina cubana, ha mort als 98 anys, segons el que ha informat el Ballet Nacional de Cuba que ella mateixa va fundar i dirigir. “Art, ensenyança i patiment, les tres coses que han marcat la meva carrera”, solia explicar la mateixa Alonso, que va ballar més de mig segle tot i els problemes de visió. Alonso es va convertir en la figura del ballet clàssic més important de l’Amèrica Llatina en aconseguir el títol de prima ballerina assoluta. Nascuda el 21 de desembre del 1920 a l’Havana, filla de pares espanyols, Alonso va començar la formació artística el 1931 a l’escola de ballet de la Sociedad Pro-Arte Musical. Més tard es va traslladar als Estats Units, on va estudiar amb Enrico Zanfretta, Alexandra Fedórova i altres professors destacats de l’School of American Ballet. El seu nom original era Alicia Ernestina de la Caridad del Cobre Martínez del Hoyo, però quan es va casar amb el mestre Fernando Alonso va adoptar el seu cognom, que va mantenir fins i tot després de divorciar-se’n. Patia un problema en un ull des que tenia 19 anys que li dificultava la visió, però això no feia trontollar la seva energia desbordada, els seus moviments secs i la seva seguretat. Tenia un estil molt propi que la va fer destacar de les altres ballarines. Va debutar al final de la dècada dels anys trenta als musicals Great lady i Stars in your eyes de Broadway. Però la carrera d’Alonso es va disparar amb el seu ingrés a l’American Ballet Theater, quan es va crear el 1940.
