Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been acknowledged in the thesis. iii Abstract Ancient Krete perceived itself, and was perceived from outside, as rather different from the rest of Greece, particularly with respect to religion, social structure, and laws. The purpose of the thesis is to explore the bases for these perceptions and their accuracy. Krete’s self-perception is examined in the light of the account of Diodoros Siculus (Book 5, 64-80, allegedly based on Kretan sources), backed up by inscriptions and archaeology, while outside perceptions are derived mainly from other literary sources, including, inter alia, Homer, Strabo, Plato and Aristotle, Herodotos and Polybios; in both cases making reference also to the fragments and testimonia of ancient historians of Krete. While the main cult-epithets of Zeus on Krete – Diktaios, associated with pre-Greek inhabitants of eastern Krete, Idatas, associated with Dorian settlers, and Kretagenes, the symbol of the Hellenistic koinon - are almost unique to the island, those of Apollo are not, but there is good reason to believe that both Delphinios and Pythios originated on Krete, and evidence too that the Eleusinian Mysteries and Orphic and Dionysiac rites had much in common with early Kretan practice. The early institutionalization of pederasty, and the abduction of boys described by Ephoros, are unique to Krete, but the latter is distinct from rites of initiation to manhood, which continued later on Krete than elsewhere, and were associated with different gods. -

Generations of heroes The Argonautica of Apollonius Rhodius brings emphatically to the attention of its readers the distinction between the generation of the Argonauts and the heroes of the Trojan War in the next genera- tion. Apollonius initially highlights this emphasis in the episode of the Argonauts’ departure, when the baby Achilles is watching them, at AR 1.557-5581 σὺν καί οἱ (sc. Chiron) παράκοιτις ἐπωλένιον φορέουσα | Πηλείδην Ἀχιλῆα, φίλωι δειδίσκετο πατρί (“and with him his wife, hold- ing Peleus’ son Achilles in her arms, showed him to his dear father”)2; he does so again in 4.866-879, which describes Thetis and Achilles as a baby. More specifically Jacqueline Klooster (2014, 521-530), in discussing the treatment of time in the Argonautica, distinguishes four periods of time to which Apollonius refers: first, the time before the Argo sailed, from the beginning of the cosmos (featured in the song of Orpheus in AR 1.496-511); second, the time of its sailing (i.e. the time of the epic’s setting); third, the past after the Argo sailed and fourth the present inhab- ited by the narrator (both hinted at by numerous allusions and aitia). -

Hesiod (8th or 7th c. BC, composed in Greek) The Homeric epics, the Iliad and the Odyssey, are probably slightly earlier than Hesiod’s two surviving poems, the Works and Days and the Theogony. Yet in many ways Hesiod is the more important author for the study of Greek mythology. While Homer treats cer- tain aspects of the saga of the Trojan War, he makes no attempt at treating myth more generally. He often includes short digressions and tantalizes us with hints of a broader tra- dition, but much of this remains obscure. Hesiod, by contrast, sought in his Theogony to give a connected account of the creation of the universe. For the study of myth he is im- portant precisely because his is the oldest surviving attempt to treat systematically the mythical tradition from the first gods down to the great heroes. Also unlike the legendary Homer, Hesiod is for us an historical figure and a real per- sonality. His Works and Days contains a great deal of autobiographical information, in- cluding his birthplace (Ascra in Boiotia), where his father had come from (Cyme in Asia Minor), and the name of his brother (Perses), with whom he had a dispute that was the inspiration for composing the Works and Days. His exact date cannot be determined with precision, but there is general agreement that he lived in the 8th century or perhaps the early 7th century BC. His life, therefore, was approximately contemporaneous with the beginning of alphabetic writing in the Greek world. Although we do not know whether Hesiod himself employed this new invention in composing his poems, we can be certain that it was soon used to record and pass them on. -

Birth of War – Aeneid 7 page 1 THE BIRTH OF WAR -- A Reading of Aeneid 7 Sara Mack In this essay I will touch on aspects of Book 7 that readers are likely either to have trouble with (the Muse Erato, for one) or not to notice at all (the founding of Ardea is a prime example), rather than on major elements of plot. I will also look at some of the intertexts suggested by Virgil's allusions to other poets and to his own poetry. We know that Virgil wrote with immense care, finishing fewer than three verses a day over a ten-year period, and we know that he is one of the most allusive (and elusive) of Roman poets, all of whom wrote with an eye and an ear on their Greek and Roman predecessors. We twentieth-century readers do not have in our heads what Virgil seems to have expected his Augustan readers to have in theirs (Homer, Aeschylus, Euripides, Apollonius, Lucretius, and Catullus, to name just a few); reading the Aeneid with an eye to what Virgil has "stolen" from others can enhance our enjoyment of the poem. Book 7 is a new beginning. So the Erato invocation, parallel to the invocation of the Muse in Book 1, seems to indicate. I shall begin my discussion of the book with an extended look at some of the implications of the Erato passage. These difficult lines make a good introduction to the themes of the book as a whole (to the themes of the whole second half of the poem, in fact). -

The Theoi of Theocritus: Generic Divinity in Idyll 1 It sounds like the beginning of a bad joke: “three gods walk up to a dying cowherd and…” Yet nevertheless, it is under such unusual circumstances that we are first introduced to Theocritus’ bucolic poetry. A programmatic poem designed to establish a new “lower” genre, Idyll 1, in fact, includes more divine figures than mortals. Theocritus’ unusual treatment of divinities begins most strikingly with his portrayal of the Nymphs, but culminates in his depiction of a trio of erotic deities—Hermes, Priapus, and Aphrodite, a set who do not occur together elsewhere in the Idylls. While the invocation of such diverse gods may seem Homeric, the presentation of these divine figures falls short of the expectations and patterns set up by Homer. In their encounters with Daphnis, their divinity is strangely suppressed, and the approaches, attire, and overall portrayal of the gods are reduced to simple, mundane terms that utterly lack the glory of epic. Interpretation of the roles of these gods has varied over time. A. S. F. Gow proposed that Hermes, at least, comes to Daphnis as a fellow herder, a “god of flocks and herds” who reminds the reader of the pastoral environment (1950); Kathryn Gutzwiller, focusing on Daphnis’ conflict with Aphrodite, explains his divine encounters as Theocritus’ attempt to emphasize Daphnis’ mythical prowess in rejecting love (1991); Marco Fantuzzi simply accepted the presence of these deities as a vestige of the mythical background of Daphnis (1998). There is no consensus among scholars; rather, there is a clear dichotomy, as Gow’s interpretation relies on the familiarity of a god and Gutzwiller and Fantuzzi’s on their divinity. -

Hellenistic Magic in the Argonautica While the scholarship on the magic of Apollonius’s Medea is significant, there nonetheless remains in it a curious gap: all scholars can agree that Medea is, clearly, a formidable magician, but a study of the specific elements of her magic is long overdue. This paper seeks to provide but a portion of it: an examination of Medea’s portrayal not merely as a powerful magic-user, but as four distinct aspects of the Hellenistic magician. At first glance, of course, yet another talk on witchcraft and Medea—yet another anything on witchcraft and Medea—may seem a bit like flogging a dead horse. Considering all that has been written on this topic, it may in fact, to borrow a quote from Neil Gaiman, seem a bit like flogging the greasy patch on the driveway where a dead horse once used to lie. Medea’s powers have ever been one of the first things that come to mind, when we think of her and of her legend, and when it comes to considering her as a character in Apollonius, they have certainly garnered more than their fair share of scholarly interest. Yet for all the attention paid to how Medea’s use of magic casts her in the traditional feminine role of helper-maiden, in the traditional male role as the hero, as a stock character from folk tale, or as a Nausicaa from hell (Clauss 1997), nothing has been done to evaluate the kind of magic she employs in the poem. And a look at the kind of magic Medea employs in the Argonautica is an appealing look indeed, for it is very, very different from the kind of magic she employs in Pindar; it is very different from the kind of magic she employs in Euripides. -
Homer – the Iliad
HOMER – THE ILIAD Homer is the author of both The Iliad and The Odyssey. He lived in Ionia – which is now modern day Turkey – between the years of 900-700 BC. Both of the above epics provided the framework for Greek education and thought. Homer was a blind bard, one who is a professional story teller, an oral historian. Epos or epic means story. An epic is a particular type of story; it involves one with a hero in the midst of a battle. The subject of the poem is the Trojan War which happened approximately in 1200 BC. This was 400 years before the poem was told by Homer. This story would have been read aloud by Homer and other bards that came after him. It was passed down generation to generation by memory. One can only imagine how valuable memory was during that time period – there were no hard drives or memory sticks. On a tangential note, one could see how this poem influenced a culture; to be educated was to memorize a particular set of poems or stories which could be cross-referenced with other people’s memory of those particular stories. The information would be public and not private. The Iliad is one of the greatest stories ever told – a war between two peoples; the Greeks from the West and the Trojans from the East. The purpose of this story is to praise Achilles. The two worlds are brought into focus; the world of the divine order and the human order. The hero of the story is to bring greater order and harmony between these two orders. -

For the hour has brought together Demeter and Demetrios; she comes to celebrate the solemn mysteries of the Kore, while he is here füll of joy, as befits the god, fair and laughing. His appearance is majestic, his friends all around him and he in their midst, as though they were stars and he the sun. Hail son of the most powerful god Poseidon and Aphrodite. (Douris FGrH76 Fl3, cf. Demochares FGrH75 F2, both at Athen. 6.253b-f; trans. as Austin 35) Had only the first lines of this ritual song survived, the modern reader would notice the assimilaüon of the adventus of a mortal king with that of a divinity, the etymo- logical association of his name with that of Demeter, the parentage of mighty gods, and the external features of a divine ruler (joy, beauty, majesty). Very often scholars reach their conclusions about aspects of ancient mentality on the basis of a fragment; and very often - unavoidably - they conceive only a fragment of reality.
