Summer 2019 St. Mary’s Blessings

God is able to make every grace abundant for you, so that in all things, always having all you need, you may have an abundance for every good work. —1 Corinthians 9:8—

A little bit about Fr. Brian, our new pastor! I grew up in Camp Hill the youngest of three children, graduating from Cedar Fr. Brian Cliff High School in 2003. Volley ball, soccer, baseball and swimming took up with his Shelter the vast majority of my free time growing up. Even my jobs as a soccer and Buddy who beach volleyball referee revolved around sports. During my freshman year of wanted to high School I took a risk and joined my high school youth group at the invitation show of Fr. Michael Letteer. It was one of the best decisions I made during high everyone that he school. I met some of my best friends and began to develop a very real indeed had relationship with God. It made me want to become a part of the Newman a pair of Center in college where I eventually discerned a call to seminary with the help Batman of Fr. LaVoie. pajamas! College ministry these past four years was very much relational. I had the opportunity to meet one-on-one with students regularly and run small group Bible Studies each week. People generally don't come to Jesus because of some great program or DVD series, but they do when someone who loves Jesus journeys with them, and they are invited to become part of a genuine community of believers. Parish life will definitely be different as I provide for the sacramental and spiritual needs of many more. I hope you know the power of God's grace within you to lead others to Jesus.

Welcome back to St. Mary’s, Fr. Pistone! This Summer has felt like a revolving door in the rectory with Fr. Leo leaving and Fr. Brian and Fr. Pistone moving in. Except for a box or two, Fr. Pistone is finally moved in. With the help of a few friends he managed to just about cover the walls of his suite with photos of family, friends and certificates of his accomplishments throughout his forty-six years of priestly life. While he was pastor at St. Mary’s, his photo often graced the pages of the Lancaster New Era as well as the Catholic Witness. He felt by doing so, he was advertising this historic church and encouraging others to be part of this great community. Father’s favorite Gospel is the Prodigal Son, so one would imagine that his favorite painting, which he has hanging in his hallway would be Rembrandt’s Prodigal Son, along with the book by the same name by Henri Nouwen. So, what’s it like for him to be back at St. Mary’s after being away for 17 years? He says it’s heartwarming to look out and recognize all the people he baptized, married and those to whom he gave First Communion. To live in the very rooms that Fr. Gralinski lived and died in gives him special joy, since he loved the priestly man and listened to so many of his jokes. We pray he lives a long full life here; we are blessed to have him return.

Congratulations Fr. Josh! Photos courtesy of Chris Heisey Fr. Joshua Weaver, along with Fr. Matthew Cannon, Fr. Samuel Miller and Fr. Andrew St. Hilaire were ordained to the Holy Priesthood on Saturday, June 1, at St. Patrick Cathedral, Harrisburg. Fr. Josh was our transitional deacon for the 2018/2019 school year while he was at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary. He was such a valued part of the staff. His contagious personality drew everyone to him. He helped with our Youth Group, baptized babies, got to preach marvelous homilies and served at Mass. He was so loved that some people stood in line for over an hour Bishop Gainer anoints Joshua Weaver’s hands (left) and our own Fr. Held here at St. Mary’s July 8-12, over 60 participants had a wildly fun adventure exploring God’s goodness and celebrating our ferocious faith. The theme this year was ROAR! Life is Wild – God is Good! God is good when life is unfair, God is good when life is scary, God is good when life changes, God is good when life is sad and God is good when life is good. Such an important message, to seek God when life is difficult but to also remember to praise God always, thanking him for all of our blessings!

Annual Parish Camping Trip By Tina Skubon This summer’s campout was a huge success. Everyone had so much fun. We played games, kayaked during the day and at night, talked and laughed, relaxed, and read. Fr. Leo celebrated daily Mass, and thanks to Rich and Dawn Stratchko, we ate well. Our campsites were under the trees, so it was cool and delightful. Such a wonderful three days spent with fellow parishioners. We all loved the new location at Codorus and plan to return next year. Watch the bulletin for the dates. (P.S. You do not have to kayak to join in.)
