The World to Come
THE WORLD TO COME Directed by Mona Fastvold *World Premiere - 2020 Venice International Film Festival - Competition* PRESS CONTACTS US Press: Emilie Spiegel, [email protected] Intl Press: Claudia Tomassini, [email protected] SYNOPSIS In this frontier romance framed by the four seasons and set against the backdrop of rugged terrain, Abigail (Katherine Waterston), a farmer’s wife, and her new neighbor Tallie (Vanessa Kirby) find themselves powerfully, irrevocably drawn to each other. As grieving Abigail tends to the needs of her taciturn husband Dyer (Casey Affleck) and Tallie bristles at the jealous control of her husband Finney (Christopher Abbot), both women are illuminated and liberated by their intense bond, filling a void in their lives they never knew existed. Director Mona Fastvold (The Sleepwalker, co-writer of CHILDHOOD OF A LEADER and VOX LUX) examines the interior lives of two women resisting constraints, giving voice to their experiences. Scripted by Jim Shepard and Ron Hansen (The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford), THE WORLD TO COME explores how isolation is overcome by the power of imagination and human connection. Q&A with Director Mona Fastvold First of all, tell me how the material came your way. It’s an interesting pairing of a novelist adapting a short story — was this a script that came to you fully formed? The script came to me from one of our producers, Whitaker Lader, who had seen my previous film. She and Casey had been developing the script with the screenwriters, Ron Hansen and Jim Shepard, for some time. I was immediately struck by it. -

Biographies of Janet Mock and Miss Major, Black Trans Women
Whalen Symposium Abstract – Award Consideration John Jacobson, Women’s and Gender Studies Word Count: 694, excluding title and bibliography #GirlsLikeUs: The Development of Femme Identities in the (Auto)biographies of Janet MoCk and Miss Major, BlaCk Trans Women Understanding the subjectivities oF black transgender women lies at the intersection oF multiple academic Fields. Revolutionaries such as Judith Butler, bell hooks and Kate Bornstein have all contributed to discourse surrounding transgender women oF color. To understand and humanize the subjectivities oF these women, there must be an interaction of gender theory, queer theory, queer of color critique, and black Feminism. Trans women oF color are routinely in the margins oF academic spaces because their lives are interactions of unique oppressed identities. This presentation puts the (auto)biographical lives and works (a memoir and documentary, respectively) oF two black trans women in context: Janet Mock, a young activist, author, and media maker, and Miss Major, an elderly activist whose liFe has spanned From Attica to Stonewall and beyond (Licona). It centers their stories through the black Feminist concept of “a healthy love for ourselves, our sisters and our community which allows us to continue our struggle and work” (Combahee River Collective). Through these methods oF black Feminist love, we can observe the ways Mock and Major have developed black trans Femme identities and how those identities are revolutionary. Mock and Major both establish self-love through their modes oF unique gender expression, the way they “become” women in the way that Simone de Beauvoir theorized through personal growth and gender expression. Their living oF this theory allows the idea oF womanhood, or Femme-central identity, to be a “process, a becoming, a constructing that cannot be rightfully said to originate or end” (Butler). -

Catch-22 Star George Clooney Shares the Catalyst for His Long-Awaited Return to Television in Emmy® Magazine
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CATCH-22 STAR GEORGE CLOONEY SHARES THE CATALYST FOR HIS LONG-AWAITED RETURN TO TELEVISION IN EMMY® MAGAZINE (NoHo Arts District, Calif. — May 10, 2019) — More than 58 years after the publication of Joseph Heller’s classic anti-war novel Catch-22, some of the biggest players in Hollywood are bringing the acclaimed story to a new audience. In the May 10 issue of the award-winning emmy magazine, series executive producer, director and star George Clooney, along with co-stars Kyle Chandler and Christopher Abbott, share the challenges of bringing one of the 20th century’s most renowned literary works to life. While many believed that turning the free-form narrative of Catch-22 into a linear, limited series couldn’t be done, Clooney, along with fellow executive producers Grant Heslov, Richard Brown and the late Steve Golin of Anonymous Content, and series writers, Luke Davies and David Michôd, were up for the challenge. They believed the timeliness of the source material would resonate with a 21st century audience. The six-hour limited series premieres on Hulu May 17. In “A Moral Mission,” the producers and writers share that they were struck by the many ways Catch-22 parallels the current political climate. “There’s an incredible dovetailing between the madness of Heller’s world that David and I tried to translate to the TV screen, and the madness of the world we wake up to every morning,” Davies says. Catch-22 marks the return to series television for Clooney, last seen two decades ago on the NBC drama ER. -

Mediate Aftermath of a Date Rape
PRESS KIT LOG LINE A young professional struggles to process what’s happened to her in the immediate aftermath of a date rape. Her trauma is compounded when she reports the assault and discovers that the cops and even her own family don’t believe her. Based on true survivor stories. SYNOPSIS Believe Her is a 13 minute narrative short film that explores why we are inclined not to believe victims of sexual assault. The story, built from true experiences from sexual assault survivors, follows MONICA (Allison Tolman) from the time she is assaulted through her decision not to file a report. As she's interviewed by the police, we see, though a series of flashbacks, that Monica was violently raped at the end of what she thought was a good first date. But as she's questioned, seeds of doubt are sewn: she was wearing something sexy, she'd had a lot to drink, she has a reputation for sleeping around. And as she processes the assault, details are fuzzy. While good intentioned, the cops, her brother, even her best friend call her story into question, forcing her to decide not to prosecute, and instead, internalize her trauma and suffer in secrecy. Believe Her was shot in Brooklyn with an all female crew in October 2017, coincidentally, just two weeks after the Weinstein story broke and launched the #MeToo movement. Filmmaking Team ERIN DOYLE COOPER Director/Writer/EP Erin Doyle Cooper is a writer, director, and creative director, who focuses on telling character-driven stories that foster diversity of thought.
