Welcome Back!

Thanks to the Greene County Commissioners for inviting us back again this year. Michael Schindel, publisher The Flashlight Drag Crew is happy to have the longest winter that I can remember—behind us. During that long winter, the Airport started a building project, only to be delayed by Old Man Winter. The good news is that we are here and racing. If you are new to the races, hopefully you won’t be able to tell that we had to make changes to the layout of the Flashlight Drags. For the regulars, please help us work through the changes.

Changes? Yes, once again we have a few new ideas that we want to try. Based on racer feedback, we eliminated the Big Dog Class. However, we also recognize that these also want to race. To be fair to the true street cars, tuners and trucks, the old Big Dog cars are now called Outlaws. And they will have there own event immediately following the traditional four hours of the Flashlight Drags. The new event is called the Outlaw Hour. It will run from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Spectators will get two shows for the price of one.

So, please sit back and enjoy the season with us. And as always, we welcome your feedback. And make sure to follow us on Facebook.

On behalf of the Flashlight Drag Crew, I extend our appreciation to all of you. Be Safe. Have Fun. Michael Schindel Publisher Altered Gas Performance Events, LLC FLD

hoosing a cover story for the season opener of the Flashlight Drags Program is never easy, neither is Cbuilding a ’34 Dodge Hot Rod Pick Up Truck from junk yard parts. Bill Slagel did it, and for the most part, I will let the JUNK YARD photographs tell the story. You won’t see this vehicle racing down the runway, but you’ll Part 2 — recognize Bill and his daughter, Lisa. They rarely miss a race. of the Backyard Bill is a master builder. Over the years, he’s built all sorts of Builder Series unusual projects including his racecars, car hauler, and now this ’34 Dodge, just to name a few.

When Bill told me about this project, I grabbed Dan Dishart, our resident photographer, and we paid a visit to Bill’s garage. We couldn’t believe the resourcefulness of this guy. Janet and Bill Slagel We also couldn’t believe the end product.

I have to list the junk yard parts here that Bill salvaged to build this truck. It is absolutely astonishing. You will be able to identify many of them in the photos.

Parts List: – 392ci Hemi – 671 Blower from a J4 Alice-Chalmers – 9 inch Ford rear end – Detroit Locker – AMC Pacer front end – Roof from a 1962 International Scout – Stainless Steel Frame salvaged from an acid bath tank, scrapped by Allegheny Ludlum Steel. Bill did all of the fabrication work – Stainless steel bed from a scrapped cafeteria counter at John Kane Hospital – Tool Box from a bundle of hardwood fl ooring – Truck bed – rough cut oak CONTINUED
