Pastor’s Column July 31 – August 1, 2021

“Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.’”

I saw an interesting meme on Facebook the other day. It said, “We need at least four basic elements to survive: air to breathe, water to drink, food to eat, and light to see and make things grow. The Bible tells us that Jesus is the breath of life, the living water that wells up to springs of eternal life, the bread of life, and the light of the world. Science was right. We need Jesus to live!” And in our Gospel reading this weekend we hear Jesus say, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.” If you recall, last weekend we heard St. John's account of the miracle of the loaves and fishes, an event which prefigured the great gift of the Eucharist in which ordinary bread and wine become transformed into Christ’s Body and Blood. Jesus himself teaches us about the Eucharist in what is called the Bread of Life discourse which makes up the sixth chapter of St. John’s Gospel, the most theologically developed among the four Gospels. Interestingly, St. John does not mention the institution of the Eucharist at the as the other three evangelists do. But this Bread of Life Discourse is one of the most important sections in all of Sacred Scripture because it furnishes our understanding of what the Eucharist is all about and why it is so essential for our spiritual well-being. When Jesus calls himself the bread of life, clearly by life Jesus means something beyond just physical existence. Real life is our spiritual relationship with God, a relationship of trust and obedience and love that is made possible only through Jesus Christ. When the people ask him what they can do to accomplish the works of God, Jesus responds, “This is the work of God, that you believe in the one that he sent.” Without Jesus, there may be existence, but not real life. Jesus is the bread of life that is meant to be savored and enjoyed, not just for a moment, but for all eternity. In our gospel reading Jesus warns the crowd, “Do not work for food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you.” So many people in our society expend all their energy chasing after perishable things like material goods, wealth, pleasure and power that can never fully satisfy but always leaves them wanting more. The hunger of the human situation is ended only when we know Christ and through him know God. In God alone is the restless soul at rest and the hungry heart is satisfied. Only Jesus, who gives us his very self, his Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity in the Eucharist, can fully satisfy our deepest desires. Bodily food helps keep us alive in this world, but it is the spiritual food of Jesus in the Eucharist that sustains us and nourishes us for that supernatural life that awaits us, that life that never ends together with Him in heaven. This is why coming to Mass each weekend is so important. We gather around the table of the Lord to first be fed by his Word in the Sacred Scriptures, and then to be nourished by his Body and Blood in Holy Communion. Having Jesus inside of us, to become a part of us, strengthens us and changes us and transforms us in ways we cannot fully comprehend to become more like Him. While we continue to livestream our Masses and Holy Hours for the benefit of those who cannot be with us physically, let’s make every effort to spread the word to invite our family members, friends and neighbors back to church so that together we can gather around the table of the Lord to be nourished by him in Holy Communion, and let’s pray that our adoration and frequent reception of the Most Blessed Sacrament of Our Lord’s Body and Blood give us that abundant life Jesus desires for us in this age, and lead us to eternal life in the age to come. – Fr. Bob

Unity – None of us is as good as all of us. Members of the Knights of Columbus all know that – together – we can accomplish far more than any of us could individually. So we stick together…we support one another.

Fraternity – Blessed Michael J. McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus, in large part, to provide assistance to the widows and children left behind when the family breadwinner died – often prematurely.

Patriotism – Members of the Knights of Columbus, be they Americans, Canadians, Mexicans, Cubans, Filipinos, Poles, or Dominicans, are patriotic citizens.
