PLAYGROUND TREES

Earlier this week Melanie Hamilton, Tree Preservation Officer at North Council, visited the school at our request to inspect the trees in the main playground. On her advice, I have applied to Council to have a number of trees pruned and two trees removed.

This work will be carried out on weekends over the next few weeks. My thanks to Mr Billy Burton [Jay 3S] who will organise this work. We regularly check the trees in our playground and prune branches as necessary.

NEW HIGH SCHOOL AT CROWS NEST

As many of you would know, a new comprehensive [non selective] coeducational high school will be opening next year on the Bradfield College site at Crows Nest. Next year it is expected that an intake of approximately 100 Year 7 children will commence with additional Year 7 classes enrolled in 2016, 2017 etc. A senior college for Years 11 and 12 will open in 2019. The location of this college has not yet been decided.

The Catchment Area for the new school is North Sydney , Crows Nest and Cammeray. The local school for children living in Neutral Bay and Cremorne remains . However, it is anticipated that children living in Neutral Bay will be able to attend as out of area enrolments next year.

I had the opportunity to tour the new school facilities last week with the Director. The building to be used next year for Year 7 is the southern block ( on Hazlebank Street and Pacific Highway ) which houses a library, science room, classrooms and offices. The children will also have access to a cafeteria-style canteen, gymnasium/hall, multi-purpose room and computer area. The existing building and facilities will undergo a refurbishment in the next few months.

There will be an information evening for parents in the near future. I will continue to provide information about the new school in the Newsletter and at the next P & C meeting on Wednesday 12th March. CHILDREN ARRIVING LATE AND LEAVING EARLY

We have had a number of children arriving late in the mornings and leaving early in the afternoons for various reasons.

Parents are required to sign their children IN and OUT at the office. Teachers are required to register all late arrivals and early departures on class rolls. By law children are required to attend school every day for the entire school day unless ill or officially exempted. Our rolls are checked each term by the DEC Home School Liaison Officers.

I ask that parents do not make medical or dental appointments during school hours. It is particularly important that parents do not commit to regular speech therapy or occupational therapy sessions. While I understand that these are beneficial, it is very important that children do not miss any class time. Not only is it disruptive to the class, it is unfair to the child who misses lessons, important messages and information. I am concerned that private therapists continue to offer these sessions in school time.

PSSA T-Ball 2014

This year the Year 5 and 6 children of NBPS have been given the opportunity to take part in a pilot program for PSSA T-Ball. Over 120 children attended the tryouts and they amazed us with their skill, enthusiasm and sportsmanship. Unfortunately, we could only select 44 children to compete, and these children have formed a social and competitive team in both Year 5 and Year 6. In the first round of competition, our 4 teams played extremely well and we ended up with three wins and one loose. Congratulations to all the Year 5 and 6 children involved in PSSA T-Ball, a fantastic start to the season. We were very proud of you!

Year 5 Competitive Tee Ball Report

Last Friday, the Year 5 Competitive T-Ball Team had their first victory against Middle Harbour Public School. Neutral Bay showed some strong fielding in the first innings, with Declan Elliott taking a fabulous catch on second base. We then went into bat, where Billy Minnet got us off to a great start with a huge hit. Maddie Newman also had an excellent game in both batting and fielding. After 3 innings the score was 13-7 in our favour. Declan Elliott was named Man of the Match.

Round 1 - Year 5 Social Team Report The Year 5 Social T-Ball team played against North Sydney Demonstration School last Friday. It was our first game of the season and the team played very well. We had a victory of 23-16. Our player of the match was Henry Aspinall because he got 8 people out. I would like to thank Miss Taylor and Mr Adams, the T-Ball coaches for organising the games and training us. Joshua Bulfin 5T (Round 1 Captain)

Round 2 - Year 6 Competitive Team Report On Friday 21st February, the Year 6 Competitive Team played against Artarmon Public School at Tunks Park. We were neck and neck for the first few innings, but in the end we won 16-13. The player of the game was Grace Gilmour, who played exceptionally well both in fielding and batting. It was a brilliant game and I hope we go well next week! Rose Richardson 6A (Round 2 Captain)

Round 2 - Year 6 Social Team Report On Friday 21st February, our Year 6 Social T-Ball Team had a smashing game, beating Artarmon Public School by 12 runs. After 4 innings, the final score was 30-18. It was obvious from the start, that this was a game we couldn't lose! Our star player was Anna Brown, who showed incredible sportsmanship. Overall, it was a great game and we all enjoyed playing. Lillian Hamer 6A (Round 2 Captain)

Round 2 - Year 5 Social Team Report On Friday 21st February, the Year 5 Social T-Ball Team played against Artarmon. It was a very close game and we ended up tying with the other team 9-9. Everyone in the team played very well and as team captain, I was very proud of them. I ended up choosing Luke Heron as our player of the match, because he was a good sport, he caught some one out and he almost scored us a home run! Good job Year 5 Social Team, you all played very well! Mitchell Holden 5J (Round 2 Captain)

NBPS SWIMMING CARNIVAL AT NORTH SYDNEY OLYMPIC POOL

When the big day arrived Neutral Bay was ready.

The sun shone, the children led by the house captains, chanted, cheered and supported their houses all day. The teachers, with the help of some wonderful parent volunteers, worked hard all day to ensure the carnival ran smoothly as the races kept coming throughout a seamless and enjoyable carnival for all.

There were fantastic performances from all the students who participated and swam with great energy, determination and enthusiasm. Our elite swimmers shone and will now go on the next level to represent the school at zone on the 11th March at the same venue. But most importantly everyone had fun and took part with a smile on their face.

Thank you to everyone who took part, by swimming, supporting, doing a job or helping in some capacity. It was a great day for the school and for all the children. • Results are contained in this edition of the newsletter • Ribbons and champions to be handed out and announced at the next assembly. • Letters and information regarding the zone will be sent out early next week

NSW CRICKET KNOCKOUT COMPETITION ROUND 1: NBPS V ARTARMON

Neutral Bay returned to the knockout competition in great style last Thursday taking on and convincingly defeating Artarmon. It was an impressive performance by the team who were super keen to play their first match in the competition and ensure that they booked their place in the second round.

Artarmon, fresh from victory against Middle Harbour, chose to put Neutral Bay into bat after winning the toss. After a solid but slow start the batsman turned up the heat. George Dhonae scored a convincing 42 before retiring not out, followed with an equally impressive 40 by Raffi Mamott, who also retired undefeated. The whole team chipped in with valuable contributions setting Artarmon a mountain to climb needing 196 off 25 overs to win.

Our bowlers bowled tightly and took early wickets to keep the pressure on the opposition’s best batsman. The pick of the excellent bowling attack was Max Bottomley who tore the heart out of the Artarmon’s bid for victory by taking 4 wickets in one over. Incredibly, 3 out of the 4 wickets knocked the stumps over, Mitchell Johnson style.

Artarmon’s innings ended in the penultimate over when the final wicket was taken with Artarmon still over a 100 short of the target set by the Neutral Bay team. Both teams showed great sportsmanship which was excellent to see. A lot of fun and enjoyment was had by all on the day. It was an outstanding performance by the Neutral Bay team who will need to show the same strength and positivity when they take on Lane Cove.

Well done team and good luck in the next round.

KONNICHIWA [HELLO] FROM THE CANTEEN

Last Friday Flexischools crashed for a while. As Friday is the busiest day nationally in school canteens, the system occasionally becomes overloaded. To prevent this happening it is advisable to order on a Thursday evening, when possible.

We have had a few children come to the canteen window with money at lunch time wanting to order a sandwich or a special. If you are new to the school please register with Flexischools www.flexischools.com.au as all lunches are ordered online, and only snacks are available at the window.

Fairies Claire Garsin & Anna Gibson looked gorgeous in their sparkly new wings for the first moosie run to Kindyland last Friday. The fairies will be back this Friday, so don’t forget to pack in $1!

We need a few extra volunteers for next week. If you are able to help, please let me know on 0417 072 007 or [email protected]

Next week’s special is Couscous Salad - I was lucky enough to test it today and it absolutely delicious. I am sure it will be a hit with the children.

We also spend time developing listening and music reading skills – vitally important for singers and instrumentalists alike.

Rehearsals take place every Wednesday during term time at Neutral Bay Public School. Supervision will be provided from 3:15-3:40pm under the Cola and rehearsal will run from 3:40-4:40pm in classroom 1G. The cost is $12 per rehearsal paid by the term - as well as an annual administration fee.
