England has a network of well-established regional studios, as well as cost-effective hidden gems and frequently used build space. Built to the highest Proximity specifications, the Centre boasts an 875m2 uninterrupted sound stage Approx. 20 miles from London, 30 minutes by train with extensive rigging capacity for professional production work from its 15m high grid. The Centre’s distinct industrial aesthetic also makes it a compelling setting for film and photography work. Additional facilities include production offices, dressing rooms, a green room, a prop-making workshop, rigging workshops, CAD suite, dance studio, recording studio, on-site car parks, loading yard and 24-hour security. The Backstage Centre is located at High House Production Park, a 14-acre site offering a range of external filming locations just 30 minutes from central London. Proximity Black Hangar Studios provides a range of on site services in Approx. 55 miles from London, 1 hour by train addition to the considerable, uninterrupted aircraft hangar space. The 14-acre backlot consists of construction workshops, production offices, extensive woodland, deserted roads, private airstrip and aircraft services. Black Hangar Studios’ elevated water tank features above and below water shooting platforms, with a 180° natural skyline, a ‘spill wall’ at one end and a deep centre section, with an underwater optical glass shooting panel. In addition, new features include Britain’s biggest permanent Cyclorama (100ft in length and 24ft in height) and a wide array of aircraft props, sets and parts, including 737 fuselage and cockpit. The Main Warehouse alone offers a further 200,000 sq ft, ideal for low build, storage or workshops. It also has a 90m green screen, the largest in England outside of London.     A Career at BBC North BBC North is the whole of the BBC in the north of England. There are approximately 2700 staff at MediaCityUK in Salford, and 700 staff who work in local radio and regional television across the north in Leeds, Sheffield, Hull, Newcastle, Middlesbrough, Carlisle, York, Blackburn, Lincoln and Liverpool. 200 more posts will move to MediaCityUK in 2015. MediaCityUK is in Salford on the Quays. There are 3 BBC buildings. The whole of BBC Sport is at Media City and there’s also BBC Breakfast, BBC Radio 5 live, the whole of the BBC Children’s department, that’s CBBC and CBeebies. We also have BBC Learning, the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, North West Tonight and Radio Manchester. There’s Future Media, who build the BBC’s websites and apps and look after the BBC iPlayer and there are Technology teams who provide the support to keep our studios on air. There is Comedy and Entertainment, with programmes like Citizen Khan, Dragons’ Den and A Question of Sport and then there’s Radio Drama and Drama North, and even more radio with Radio 6 music and some Radio 2 and Radio 4 programmes. There is more to MediaCityUK than just the BBC, with many other companies there as well. ITV have around 500 staff there and they make Jeremy Kyle and Countdown and, of course, there’s the new set for Coronation Street. The first recording was done on this set in March. There are lot of smaller companies there too including small production companies, technical companies, sceneshifters, media accountants and lawyers and of course shops and restaurants as well.

It analyses the relationship between the physical location of TV series production at Elstree Studios, UK, the representation of place in programmes, and the international trade in television fiction between the UK and USA. The TV series made at Elstree by the ITC and ABC companies and their affiliates linked Britishness with an international modernity associated with the USA, while also promoting national specificity. To do this, they drew on film production techniques that were already common for TV series production in Hollywood.

He or she instructs the crew of electricians in their work in addition to guiding the team of operators who usually sit with the LD in the lighting control room. Fortunately, producers and directors realise that the result would look pretty awful. Another thing is also worth making clear – a lighting director is not an electrician. He or she might have been once, but an LD is not another name for a crew chief or gaffer. Most television LDs do not have electrical qualifications, although some may have.
