THE BULB NEWSLETTER Number 35 July-September 2001 Amana lives, long live Among! ln the Kew Scientist, Issue 19 (April 2001), Kew's Dr Mike Fay reports on the molecular work that has been carried out on Among. This little tulip«like eastern Asiatic group of Liliaceae that we have long grown and loved as Among (A. edulis, A. latifolla, A. erythroniolde ), but which took a trip into the genus Tulipa, should in fact be treated as a distinct genus. The report notes that "Molecular data have shown this group to be as distinct from Tulipa s.s. [i.e. in the strict sense, excluding Among] as Erythronium, and the three genera should be recognised.” This is good news all round. I need not change the labels on the pots (they still labelled Among), neither will i have to re~|abel all the as Erythronlum species tulips! _ Among edulis is a remarkably persistent little plant. The bulbs of it in the BN garden were acquired in the early 19605 but had been in cultivation well before that, brought back to England by a plant enthusiast participating in the Korean war. Although not as showy as the tulips, they are pleasing little bulbs with starry white flowers striped purplish-brown on the outside. It takes a fair amount of sun to encourage them to open, so in cool temperate gardens where the light intensity is poor in winter and spring, pot cultivation in a glasshouse is the best method of cultivation. With the extra protection and warmth, the flowers will open out almost flat. -

Native Americans used a tea derived from the leaves to cure a number of ailments. Hepaticas are poisonous in large doses. They can also be irritating to the skin if handled. Flowers often found in clumps. The leaves are distinct with three lobes ending in a rounded tip. The flower stocks are upright standing over the flattened basal leaves. The leaves are light green at first but turn a purplish, wine colour as the season wears on and can often be seen standing out from the snow in the winter. Photo : 2013 Brian Popelier Interesting Facts The plant gets its name from the leathery purple-brown basal leaves, which resemble the shape of the liver. Many early herbalists believed that the shape of the plant determined its usefulness in the treatment of liver ailments. Bees and flies are the primary pollinators. The plant uses ants to distribute their seeds. As the seeds drop ants pick them up and disperse the seeds to other areas. -

Kholodny Institute of Botany National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine 2 Tereshchenkivska Street Kiev (Kyiv), 01004 Ukraine [email protected] ABSTRACT Following the proposed re-circumscription of genera in the group of Anemone L. and related taxa of Ranunculaceae (Mosyakin 2016, Christenhusz et al. 2018) and based on recent molecular phylogenetic and partly morphological evidence, the genus Anemonastrum Holub is recognized here in an expanded circumscription (including Anemonidium (Spach) Holub, Arsenjevia Starod., Tamuria Starod., and Jurtsevia Á. Löve & D. Löve) covering members of the “Anemone ” clade with x=7, but excluding Hepatica Mill., a genus well outlined morphologically and forming a separate subclade (accepted by Hoot et al. (2012) as Anemone subg. Anemonidium (Spach) Juz. sect. Hepatica (Mill.) Spreng.) within the clade earlier recognized taxonomically as Anemone subg. Anemonidium (sensu Hoot et al. 2012). The following new combinations at the section and subsection ranks are validated: Anemonastrum Holub sect. Keiskea (Tamura) Mosyakin, comb. nov . ( Anemone sect. Keiskea Tamura); Anemonastrum [sect. COLONIAL GARD~J~ PLANTS I Flowers Before 1700 The following plants are listed according to the names most commonly used during the colonial period. The botanical name follows for accurate identification. The common name was listed first because many of the people using these lists will have access to or be familiar with that name rather than the botanical name. The botanical names are according to Bailey’s Hortus Second and The Standard Cyclopedia of Horticulture (3, 4). They are not the botanical names used during the colonial period for many of them have changed drastically. We have been very cautious concerning the interpretation of names to see that accuracy is maintained. By using several references spanning almost two hundred years (1, 3, 32, 35) we were able to interpret accurately the names of certain plants. For example, in the earliest works (32, 35), Lark’s Heel is used for Larkspur, also Delphinium. Then in later works the name Larkspur appears with the former in parenthesis. Similarly, the name "Emanies" appears frequently in the earliest books. Finally, one of them (35) lists the name Anemones as a synonym. Some of the names are amusing: "Issop" for Hyssop, "Pum- pions" for Pumpkins, "Mushmillions" for Muskmellons, "Isquou- terquashes" for Squashes, "Cowslips" for Primroses, "Daffadown dillies" for Daffodils. Other names are confusing. Bachelors Button was the name used for Gomphrena globosa, not for Centaurea cyanis as we use it today. Similarly, in the earliest literature, "Marygold" was used for Calendula. Later we begin to see "Pot Marygold" and "Calen- dula" for Calendula, and "Marygold" is reserved for Marigolds. -

Sie ist die erste Publikation, welche die Lebensbeziehungen zwischen Wildbienen und ihren Flugpflanzen in diesem Gebiete behandelt. Die Beobachtungen erstreckten sich über einen Zeitraum von etwa neun Jahren. In nomenklatorischer Hinsicht war uns das Werk SCHMIEDEKNECHT, Die Hymenopteren Nord- und Mitteleuropas, 2. Auflage, 1930, maßgebend. Die Benen- nung der Pflanzen erfolgte nach K. FRITSCH, Exkursionsflora, 3. Auf- lage, 1922. Bei der Durchsicht der Pflanzennamen war uns Professor Dr. Herbert Schmid behilflich, wofür wir ihm an dieser Stelle den besten Dank aussprechen. Im Gegensatz zur domestizierten Honigbiene und deren Rassen, welche weitgehendst polyphag sind, ist unter den solitären und parasitären (Wild-) Bienen ein großer Teil monophag, d. h. auf eine oder mehrere bestimmte Blütenpflanzen oder mindestens auf eine oder wenige Blütenpflanzenfamilien spezialisiert und zugleich auch meistens stenök verbreitet. Die sozialen Apiden (Hummeln) sind durchwegs polyphag. Die Zahl der Blütenpflanzen, die von der Honigbiene besucht werden, ist außerordentlich groß und umfaßt viele Arten, auf denen Wildbienen niemals angetroffen werden. Weitaus die Mehrzahl aller Insekten, welche die Bestäubung der Pflanzen durch Übertragung des Pollens übermitteln, sind die Bienen. Neben der Honigbiene (Apis mellifica) haben auch die Wild- bienen — was weniger bekannt sein dürfte — einen großen Anteil an diesem Vorgang. Stenöke Bienen bestäuben nur eine oder nur wenige Pflanzenarten und sind daher nur dort anzutreffen, wo diese Pflanzen verbreitet sind. -

Naturforsch. 51c, 151-154 (1996); received November 11, 1995/January 5, 1996 Ranunculaceae, Fatty Acid Composition, Columbinic Acid, Gamma-Linolenic Acid, Taxonomy The fatty acid composition of seed oils of eight Ranunculaceae was determinated in order to characterize new sources of gamma-linolenic acid. Fatty acids were identified as fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) by capillary gas-liquid chromatography (GC) and capillary GC- Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). For trienic FAME the use of a cyanopropyl- polysiloxane stationary phase (CP-Sil 88) allowed the separation with high resolution of methyl ester of columbinic acid (trans-5,c/s-9,ds-12 18:3) and gamma-linolenic acid (cis-6,cis-9,cis-12 18:3). The results confirmed the presence of columbinic acid in Thalictrum seed oils, and that of gamma-linolenic acid in A nem one and related species seed oils. The taxonomic subdivision of Ranunculaceae into sub-families and tribes, which resulted from morphological considera tions, did not account for the above results.
