U.S. SENATOR DAN COATS MILITARY ACADEMY NOMINATION PROCEDURES

NOMINATIONS:

To be considered for admission to a military academy, an applicant must have a nomination, pursuant to Title 10 of the U.S. Code, through either a congressional office or activities related to military service. Applicants who meet eligibility requirements may apply for and receive nominations from both categories.

Applicants may apply for and receive nominations from both their U.S. Representative and their two U.S. Senators. Applicants may also apply to the Vice President of the , who can nominate applications at large.

NOMINEE SELECTIONS:

Nominees will be selected using the competitive nomination process. This method allows increased competition among the candidates and offers an equal chance for all qualified applications.

To assist in selecting the most qualified candidates, Senator Coats has formed an academy selection committee to review each applicant’s application packet and interview the top candidates. Interviews will be conducted in mid-November and December, with notice of specific dates and time being given in advance. In the weeks immediately following the interviews, final selection will be made and the candidates will be announced.

ELIGIBILITY:

Candidates must meet the following requirements as of July 1st of the year of admission to a military academy:

1. Must be at least 17 years of age, but not have passed their 23rd birthday.

2. Must be a U.S. citizen.

3. Must be a legal resident of .

4. Must be unmarried, not pregnant, and have no legal obligation to support children or other dependents.

Application Checklist

For consideration, each applicant must submit the following materials postmarked or submitted electronically no later than November 1, 2012.

1. A completed application form signed by applicant and resume, both of which must be typed or legibly written.

2. Typed and completed personal questionnaire.

3. A typed, 300-word essay describing why the applicant wants to attend a military academy and serve a career as a commissioned officer.

4. Official copy of high school transcript, GPA through junior year, and class rank. Also, include the list of classes applicant is enrolled in during the fall semester of their senior year.

5. If applicable, official copy of college transcript, including courses currently in progress and GPA.

6. A minimum of three letters of recommendation from non-family adults. Recommendation letters may be written by any adult chosen by the student, such as clergy, family friends, employers, coaches, or teachers. Letters may be submitted to Senator Coats’ office directly or via the student, who has access to his/her application file at any time. Additional letters may be submitted.

7. SAT or ACT scores. Additional scores can be submitted as long as they are postmarked by November 1, 2012. Scores should be sent directly to Senator Coats’ Indianapolis Office. Applicants should reference Senator Coats’ report codes: SAT code 1651, ACT code 7127.

8. Attach a current photo to the application form, wallet size, with your name and hometown on the back.

9. Remember that it is in your best interest to apply for a nomination with both of your U.S. Senators, your U.S. Representative and the Vice President. Contact each office to get information on how to apply, as every office has its own application procedures.
