PETER HEATH All Text and No Image Makes Blake a Dull Artist: Inseparable Interplay Between Poetry and Picture in Blake's Multimedia Art W.J.T. Mitchell opens his book Blake's Composite Art by saying that “it has become superfluous to argue that Blake's poems need to be read with their accompanying illustrations” (3); in his mind, the fact that Blake's work consists of both text and image is obvious, and he sets out to define when and how the two media function independently of one another. However, an appraisal of prominent anthologies like The Norton Anthology of English Literature and Duncan Wu's Romanticism shows that Mitchell's sentiment is not universal, as these collections display Blake's Songs of Innocence and Experience as primarily poetic texts, and include the illuminated plates for very few of the works.1 These seldom-presented pictorial accompaniments suggests that the visual aspect is secondary; 1 The Longman Anthology of British Literature features more of Blake's illuminations than the Norton and Romanticism, including art for ten of Blake's Songs. It does not include all of the “accompanying illustrations,” however, suggesting that the Longman editors still do not see the images as essential. at the EDGE http://journals.library.mun.ca/ate Volume 1 (2010) 93 clearly anthology editors, who are at least partially responsible for constructing canons for educational institutions, do not agree with Mitchell’s notion that we obviously must (and do) read Blake’s poems and illuminations together. Mitchell rationalizes the segregated study of Blake by suggesting that his “composite art is, to some extent, not an indissoluble unity, but an interaction between two vigorously independent modes of expression” (3), a statement that in fact undoes itself. -

Reading the Poem The Poison Tree The Poet William Blake (1757-1827) is one of England’s most celebrated poets. He was born the son of a London hosier. He did not go to school, which was not compulsory in those times. However, he was taught by his mother, and from childhood showed extraordinary aptitude. His family belonged to a strict Christian sect, and Blake was brought up to be very devout. In 1772 he was appren- ticed to an engraver, and in 1779, because of his talents, became a student at the Royal Academy, where he studied paint- ing. He married Catherine Boucher in 1782. It was a happy marriage, though they had no chil- dren. After his father’s death, he and his brother opened a print shop. He was beginning to write and illustrate as well, and in 1783, a benefactor paid for his first work, Poetic Sketches. In 1989, he self-published Songs of Innocence, the first of his really ma- jor collections. Songs of Experience followed in 1794. © Ziptales Pty Ltd Reading the Poem The Poison Tree The Poet Blake had a powerful sense of personal morality. He was deeply mystical in his beliefs. He took very seriously the idea of Christian charity (ie loving kindness towards other people), and was appalled by some of the cruelties he saw around him. Among his most famous poems are ‘The Chimney Sweeper’, a devastating por- trait of the wretched lives of the poor, and ‘Jerusalem’, an anguised reflection on the imperfection of life, which contains the now immortal expression ‘dark satanic mills’ (a reference to the facto- ries of the industrial revolution). -

The angel tells 3 Could scarcely cry "weep! weep! weep! weep!" Tom that if he behaves well God will take care of him and make sure he is happy. 4 So your chimneys I sweep & in soot I sleep. The next day, Tom woke up. We got out of bed before dawn and 5 There's little Tom Dacre, who cried when his head went with our bags and chimney brushes to our work. It was a 6 That curled like a lamb's back, was shaved, so I said, cold morning but Tom seemed fine. If we all just work hard, 7 "Hush, Tom! never mind it, for when your head's bare, nothing bad will happen. 8 You know that the soot cannot spoil your white hair." THEMES 9 And so he was quiet, & that very night, 10 As Tom was a-sleeping he had such a sight! 11 That thousands of sweepers, Dick, Joe, Ned, & Jack, HARDSHIP AND CHILDHOOD 12 Were all of them locked up in coffins of black; “The Chimney Sweeper” is a bleak poem told from the perspective of a chimney sweep, a young boy 13 And by came an Angel who had a bright key, living in 1700s London who has to earn a living doing the 14 And he opened the coffins & set them all free; dangerous work of cleaning soot from people’s chimneys. -

"1 Recent researches have shown the special importance and significance of childhood in romantic poetry. Blake, being a harbinger of romanticism, had engraved childhood as a state of unalloyed joy in his Songs of Innocence. And among the romantics, be was perhaps the first to have discovered childhood. His inspiration was of course the Bible where he had seen the image of the innocent, its joy and all pure image of little, gentle Jesus. That image ignited the very ·imagination of Blake, the painter and engraver. And with his illuntined mind, he translated that image once more in his poetry, Songs of Innocence. Among the records of an early meeting of the Blake Society on 12th August, 1912 there occurs the following passage : 20 "A pleasing incident of the occasion was the presence of a very pretty robin, which hopped about unconcernedly on the terrace in front of the house and among the members while the papers were being read.. -

The Meeting of Childhood and Colonialism in William Blake’s Songs of Innocence and of Experience Mötet mellan Barndom och Kolonialism i Songs of Innocence and of Experience av William Blake Fredrik Karlsson Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences ENGCL1 15 HP Supervisor: Åke Bergvall Examiner: Johan Wijkmark Date: 2018-02-07 Karlstads Universitet Abstract In Songs of Innocence and of Experience William Blake contrasts childhood and adulthood. This essay relates this to another prominent social issue in the collection, colonialism. This essay aims at answering the question of what happens when the child is black rather than white. By providing an analysis of how children in general are portrayed, followed up with a brief discussion of how Blake deals with colonial issues this essay sets the stage for a final concluding discussion about what happens when the two themes of childhood and colonialism meet. The discussion reveals that Blake is using irony to ridicule the contemporary polarized meanings of the words “black” and “white”. By doing this Blake makes the little black boy in “The Little Black Boy” the perfect symbol for criticising the contemporary issues of child abuse and colonialism in one single piece of poetry. THE ANALYSIS OF WILIAM BLAKE’S POEM THE CHIMNEY SWEEPER By Ketut Ayu Ary Wardani Jurusan Sastra Ingris Fakultas Sastra Universitas Udayana Abstrak Karya sastra dan sejarah merupakan hal yang tidak dapat dipisahkan, terutama saat kita membahas Era Romantis. Revolusi Perancis dan Revolusi Industri merupakan suatu peristiwa besar yang dampaknya terasa dalam setiap aspek kehidupan di Eropa, termasuk dalam karya sastra dari William Blake yang berjudul The Chimney Sweeper. Dalam The Chimney Sweeper, William Blake melukiskan tentang mereka yang ingin mendapat uang dengan cara mudah dengan mengorbankan anak-anak sebagai penyapu cerobong. Dalam puisi ini Blake menegaskan bahwa para pemimpin bahkan orang tua dari anak itu sendiri, berpikir bahwa mereka tidak melakukan kesalahan dan tidak akan menyakiti anak mereka dengan pekerjaan tersebut, yang pada kenyataannya merupakan tindakan yang sangat berbahaya dan membawa penderitaan untuk anak-anak para penyapu cerobong tersebut. Studi ini akan mengadopsi dua teori utama, yaitu teori dari Knickerbocker dan Reninger, serta teori dari Wellek dan Warren. Pembahasan akan difokuskan pada latar belakang sejarah puisi dan menganalisis puisi itu sendiri dengan melihat pesan dalam puisi serta pengalaman hidup sang penulis, William Blake. Blake ingin menyampaikan pesan bahwa anak-anak dibawah umur yang dipekerjakan oleh orang tua mereka, sesungguhnya berada dalam sebuah ketakutan, penderitaan, bahkan bahaya besar yang mengancam jiwa mereka. A work of literature must havemeaning, and it cannot avoid from having one. Poetry is narrative, it tells a story. It conveys the meaning in ways that are different from those found in prose fiction. -

More specifically, this research will begin with biographical information about Bolcom and a brief glimpse into his compositional catalogue and style. I will continue with an exploration of the field of semiotics, or sign study, complete with a chronological evolution of the domain. This section of the research will also explore how the field can be applied to musical analysis following the models created by Leonard G. Ratner, V. Kofi Agawu, Robert S. Hatten, and Arthur B. Wenk. In order to gain a clearer perspective of Bolcom's possible intended musical meanings, this research will also delve into the biographical information of William Blake and explore the literary criticisms associated with his two-part collection of poetry Songs of Innocence and of Experience. Next, I will utilize semiotics to analyze Bolcom's composition for signs and topics, which will help to define the composer's musical "mask." In conclusion, the accepted meanings of Blake's poetry as discussed by the literary criticisms will be compared to the musical meanings of Bolcom's composition to determine if and how the composer has musically captured the literary intentions of the author. -
