More than 60 people converged on the Civic Hall for the launch of the book, ‘They served with courage,’ which documents the lives of the men and women whose names are memorialised on the Terang War Memorial. Co-author Tom Richies said it was a rewarding experience to have created something which provides greater understanding of the locals who served. “It isn’t enough to have these names on a monument, and while monuments are important, we need to know the history of those men and women,” he said. “Rather than just a list of names we now have a book which tells the story behind those names and I feel that is important. “If you leave it any longer, a lot of those names would not be able to be found; no relatives would be left, there would be no diaries, there would be nothing.” Mr Richies said he was pleased with how New release: Terang Returned and Services League president Terry Fidge (left) and Corangamite Shire councillor Geraldine many people had come out to celebrate the Conheady (right) were among those to join ‘They served with courage’ co-authors Margaret McIntosh and Tom Richies for launch. the launch of the new book. 2021D “I didn’t expect half as many, but it shows soldiers and to the local families whose sons Terang Returned and Services League people were real, living people who made a the interest in the book and I’m sure it’ll get and daughters went away to serve,” she said. president Terry Fidge, who served as a guest supreme sacrifi ce to go away. around and a lot more people will buy it when “What they gave up has been recorded, we speaker at the event, said it was fantastic to “A lot of them never returned, and those who they realise what it is and what it represents,” see such interest from the community in the know the story and we know the connections, did return were scarred for life, but they got on he said. stories of those who served. so I think it is amazing. with living and getting back involved with the Corangamite Shire councillor Geraldine “I think it’s great to see so many people here Conheady was among more than 60 attendees “I’m really proud of the efforts and dedication really enjoying it,” he said. community. to welcome the launch. which Tom and Margaret have made to put this “It’s important for people to understand that “I think our little country town owes them a “I think it is a beautiful tribute to those book together.” history because it is part of our history. The Achievement Program, which is supported by the Victorian Government and delivered by Cancer Council , is a health and wellbeing program aiming to help workplaces, schools and early childhood services create healthy environments for working, learning and living. The program supports workplaces to embed health and wellbeing into the organisation’s culture by meeting benchmarks in fi ve health areas: • Healthy eating; • Physical Activity; • Smoking; • Alcohol and other drug use; and • Mental health and wellbeing. TMHS health promotion offi cer Laura O’Dowd said after completing the mental health and wellbeing priority area in May 2020, THMS switched its focus towards completing the alcohol and other drug use benchmarks. “Unhealthy alcohol and drugs use is linked to serious health issues including addiction and Healthy workplace: Terang and Mortlake Health Service staff were thrilled to have recently completed the second of fi ve cancer, and can affect workplace productivity benchmark requirements as part of the Victorian Government’s Achievement Program to promote workplace health and through absenteeism, lateness, staff turnover, wellbeing. 2021D accidents and reduced performance,” she said. ever-changing environment. drug use program over the past six months other drug use section of the achievement “Alcohol and drug abuse can also affect “We started by completing what’s called a includes a review and update of the alcohol program. staff morale and health. MORTLAKE SOUTH WIND FARM CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

#39 - April 29, 2021

The Mortlake South Wind Farm is located approximately 5kms south of Mortlake and 7kms north of Terang. The project will produce 530 Gwh of clean energy each year, which is enough to power about 115,000 homes annually. The wind farm includes 35 wind turbines with a maximum blade tip height of 186m.

Turbine installation at the Mortlake South Wind Farm is nearing completion, with 30 wind turbine generators now successfully installed at site. The current expected completion date for wind turbine installation is May 2021. Following completion and commissioning of the 35 wind turbine generators, the wind farm will begin exporting clean, renewable energy into the Victorian electricity grid.

Jointing and remediation works for the 220kV underground connection line are now complete, with quality and assurance checks now underway. This high voltage connection links the wind farm to the Terang Terminal Station. Pre-commissioning works at the onsite electrical substation are progressing well as the wind farm nears completion.

Applications for the 2021 Mortlake South Wind Farm Sponsorship & Small Grants Program closed on Friday 26th March. We had widespread interest from the community and received a great range of applications for projects and initiatives that will contribute to health, wellbeing, environmental sustainability, education, economic development or cultural development in the local area. We look forward to announcing the successful applicants within coming weeks.

TERANG and District Racing Club received some tough love and care this week. The club’s racetrack underwent its annual maintenance program, with Racing Victoria staff coming from Melbourne to assist with the repair works. The club’s racing calendar is expected to be confi rmed in the coming weeks, with Racing Victoria normally revealing its racing dates for the next season in mid-May. Meanwhile, 119 horses were given hit-outs ahead of the upcoming May Racing Carnival next week.
