In 2011 she was the online director for Series 3 of EastEnders: E20 (BBC3) and made behind-the-scenes content for the flagship drama. That same year she wrote and directed a new online drama series aimed at teenage fathers, Me and My Dad, for award-winning website YoungDads.TV and later directed a soap opera written by young people, Dead Ends, for Nick Hornby’s literacy charity Ministry of Stories. Charlotte has directed the Electronic Press Kit for many high-profile drama series. This included slotting into crews and creating original behind-the-scenes material, as well as both formal and on-set cast interviews. Charlotte also took part in the Channel 4/Directors UK scheme for women directors on Hollyoaks and then went on to direct 4 episodes, before taking time out earlier this year to have a baby. As a writer, Charlotte has a feature film in development, Bird, with Underground Films in Dublin, supported by the Irish Film Board, as well as a TV comedy with Urban Myth/Guilty Party, Invisible, along with other original projects. Charlotte excels in exploring difficult subject matters but with wit and warmth. Her aim is to write and direct high quality, entertaining fictionalised projects, which have the potential to introduce new audiences to characters and situations they might not otherwise encounter.

  • British Radio Drama and the Avant-Garde in the 1950S
British radio drama and the avant-garde in the 1950s Hugh Chignell 1 Bournemouth University, UK Correspondence: Professor Hugh Chignell, Faculty of Media and Communication, Bournemouth University, Poole, Dorset, BH12 5BB, UK. +44 (0)1202 961393 Email: [email protected] 1 British radio drama and the avant-garde in the 1950s Abstract The BBC in the 1950s was a conservative and cautious institution. British theatre was at the same time largely commercial and offered a glamorous distraction from wider social and political realities. During the decade, however, new avant-garde approaches to drama emerged, both on the stage and on radio. The avant-garde was particularly vibrant in Paris where Samuel Beckett was beginning to challenge theatrical orthodoxies. Initially, managers and producers in BBC radio rejected a radio version of Beckett’s, Waiting for Godot and other experimental work was viewed with distaste but eventually Beckett was accepted and commissioned to write All That Fall (1957), a masterpiece of radio drama. Other Beckett broadcasts followed, including more writing for radio, extracts from his novels and radio versions of his stage plays as well as plays by the experimental radio dramatist, Giles Cooper. This article examines the different change agents which enabled an initially reluctant BBC to convert enthusiastically to the avant-garde. A networked group of younger producers, men and women, played a vital role in the acceptance of Beckett as did the striking pragmatism of senior radio managers. A willingness to accept the transnational cultural flow from Paris to London was also an important factor. The attempt to reinvent radio drama using ‘radiophonic’ sound effects (pioneered in Paris) was another factor for change and this was encouraged by growing competition from television drama on the BBC and ITV.

  • No.142, Winter 2006/2007
THE HIGH WYCOMBE SOCIETY MERRY MERRY CHRISTMAS newsletter CHRISTMAS NUMBER 142 WINTER 2006/2007 Knowing Our Roots “DO WE want High Wycombe to be known for its shopping or do we want to be proud of our rich heritage?” That is the question posed by member Rub Suleman on page 11 of this issue. The answer, surely, is “both”. If our traders are to be prosperous and there are to be plenty of varied jobs for our young people, Eden must transform the High Wycombe shopping “experience” to keep and attract shoppers. However, knowledge of our heritage also has its part to play in raising our civic awareness. And, as Mr Suleman points out, young people, such as the growing numbers of students at our University College, are not born with this knowledge – they have to be told about it and it has to be pointed out to them. There are many aspects to this. Preserving our High Street and the wonderful variety of buildings in it is one. Treasuring our museum, with a constant series of fascinating exhibitions so enthusiastically managed by its dedicated staff is another. Striving to ensure the quality of new buildings in the town centre, whether it is the drama of Eden or simply new flats that do not clash with their immediate neighbours is also important. And how about questioning the need for the ever-growing plethora of traffic lights? Above all, our history must be cherished and even advertised. It is good to see that our mediaeval ruin, the St John’s Hospice, has at last been cleared of undergrowth.
