The War of Independence in County Kilkenny: Conflict, Politics and People Eoin Swithin Walsh B.A. University College Dublin College of Arts and Celtic Studies This dissertation is submitted in part fulfilment of the Master of Arts in History July 2015 Head of School: Dr Tadhg Ó hAnnracháin Supervisor of Research: Professor Diarmaid Ferriter P a g e | 2 Abstract The array of publications relating to the Irish War of Independence (1919-1921) has, generally speaking, neglected the contributions of less active counties. As a consequence, the histories of these counties regarding this important period have sometimes been forgotten. With the recent introduction of new source material, it is now an opportune time to explore the contributions of the less active counties, to present a more layered view of this important period of Irish history. County Kilkenny is one such example of these overlooked counties, a circumstance this dissertation seeks to rectify. To gain a sense of the contemporary perspective, the first two decades of the twentieth century in Kilkenny will be investigated. Significant events that occurred in the county during the period, including the Royal Visit of 1904 and the 1917 Kilkenny City By-Election, will be examined. Kilkenny’s IRA Military campaign during the War of Independence will be inspected in detail, highlighting the major confrontations with Crown Forces, while also appraising the corresponding successes and failures throughout the county. The Kilkenny Republican efforts to instigate a ‘counter-state’ to subvert British Government authority will be analysed. In the political sphere, this will focus on the role of Local Government, while the administration of the Republican Courts and the Republican Police Force will also be examined.

Notice On mature reflection the Commitee of the Society has decided to change the title of Owen O ’Kelly’s book from A History of County Kilkenny to The Place-Names of the County of Kilkenny. The new title is thought more exactly to describe the book. An alphabetical index has been added. Within the new material, Owen O ’Kelly’s book is reproduced complete and unaltered. The map on the cover (also reproduced inside) is made from a Grand Jury map. The Grand Juries were the forerunners of the County Councils. They commissioned maps which are now extremely rare. The Grand Jury maps predate the first edition of the Ordnance Survey maps and are of great interest because of the different spellings of place names. Thus they can be used to locate changes that have occurred. File No S.2914 Form B.S.M.2 STATEMENTBY Mr. HOLOHANHOLMIMT, Tincashel, Urlingford, County Kilkenny. Formerly Vice-Commandant, 2nd Battalion, Kilkenny Brigade. After a lapse of almost forty years it is now rather difficult to recall the the Irish Volunteer and history of Sinn. Féin movements in this area during the years from 1917 to 1921. It was, as far as I can now recollect, in the early months of 1917 that a Sinn Féin Club and a Company of Irish Volunteers were established in Urlingford. I was closely associated with both from their formation and was a member of the Committee of the Shin Féin Club and 2nd Lieutenant of the Volunteer Company. The strength of the Volunteer Company in its initial stages was approximately thirty men. It elected Mr. Patrick Talbot, then of Lisduff, Urlingford, and now resident in Dublin, as its first Captain. The usual routine of Volunteer Companies of the time was carried out. We had secret parades for drilling and training. Good progress was made with organisation and new recruits were enrolled slowly but steadily. In this work of organisation we received praiseworthy assistance from the late Mr. Sean F. Gibbons, Ballylarkin, Clomantagh, afterwards T.D., Senator and for some years Chairman of Seanad Éireann, In June of 1917, Mr.

  • The List of Church of Ireland Parish Registers
THE LIST of CHURCH OF IRELAND PARISH REGISTERS A Colour-coded Resource Accounting For What Survives; Where It Is; & With Additional Information of Copies, Transcripts and Online Indexes SEPTEMBER 2021 The List of Parish Registers The List of Church of Ireland Parish Registers was originally compiled in-house for the Public Record Office of Ireland (PROI), now the National Archives of Ireland (NAI), by Miss Margaret Griffith (1911-2001) Deputy Keeper of the PROI during the 1950s. Griffith’s original list (which was titled the Table of Parochial Records and Copies) was based on inventories returned by the parochial officers about the year 1875/6, and thereafter corrected in the light of subsequent events - most particularly the tragic destruction of the PROI in 1922 when over 500 collections were destroyed. A table showing the position before 1922 had been published in July 1891 as an appendix to the 23rd Report of the Deputy Keeper of the Public Records Office of Ireland. In the light of the 1922 fire, the list changed dramatically – the large numbers of collections underlined indicated that they had been destroyed by fire in 1922. The List has been updated regularly since 1984, when PROI agreed that the RCB Library should be the place of deposit for Church of Ireland registers. Under the tenure of Dr Raymond Refaussé, the Church’s first professional archivist, the work of gathering in registers and other local records from local custody was carried out in earnest and today the RCB Library’s parish collections number 1,114. The Library is also responsible for the care of registers that remain in local custody, although until they are transferred it is difficult to ascertain exactly what dates are covered.

Irish Volunteer Activities, Kilkenny Brigade, 1917 21. Conditions, if any, Stipulated by Witness. Nil. File No S.2938. Form BS.M.2 STATEMENT BY MR. TIMOTHY HENNESSY, DANESFORT, CO. KILKLNNY. I was born in the year of 1891 at Threecastles, Co. Kilkenny, and I was educated at the local national school there. My father, who was a farmer, took a keen interest in national affairs, and in addition to the usual weekly papers, periodicals, such as, "The Irish and were read in our home. Peasant" "The Nation", The family also took an active interest in the Gaelic Athletic Association, and in the early years of the present century, my eldest brother, Edward, captained the Threecastles hurling team to win the County Kilkenny hurling championship, and then went on to captain the county team in the All Ireland championship series. In the year of l9O4, I was apprenticed to the grocery, wine and spirit business in the retail and wholesale establishment of Messrs. M.L. Potter Co., High Street, Kilkenny. After a few years there, I became interested in the Irish industrial revival movement and also in the promotion of Gaelic games in Kilkenny city. This brought me into contact with such men as the late Alderman James Nowlan, then President of the G.A.A., the late Patrick Gorcoran and the late Peter De Loughry. Although I was not then aware of it, all these men were active members of the Irish Republican Brotherhood.

  • Castlebanny Wind Farm Dear Homeowner
Castlebanny Wind Farm Dear Homeowner, First and foremost, we hope this finds you safe and well in these challenging times, and adjusting as best as possible to new ways of going about daily life. As you may be aware, Coillte’s Renewable Energy business in partnership with ART Generation has been actively exploring a wind farm development opportunity close to Mullinavat, Co Kilkenny. The community engagement model which we use within our team has given us an opportunity to meet with a very high proportion of people residing within 2 km of the potential wind farm. The proposed Castlebanny Wind Farm project is now at a stage where all the environmental assessment data has been gathered and collated to inform a proposed layout. This brochure sets out a detailed overview of all aspects of the proposed Castlebanny Wind Farm project and we look forward to addressing any queries that may arise. We propose to address any queries by phone call or in person subject to being able to respect the Government Covid-19 guidelines in place at the time. We are planning a further event to share information on the project in the near future. The nature of this event will depend on Government advice at the time but will include an online project information platform as a minimum. Please be assured that we will continue to make every effort to ensure that we provide you with all the information you need in order to fully understand the details of this proposed project. We are also committed to making available the necessary resources within our team to support any engagement.
