PRESS RELEASE ERIC ROHMER 100 - COMEDIES AND PROVERBS - ON LIMITED EDITION (15) Rohmer 100: Celebrating Éric Rohmer’s Centenary RELEASE DATE Éric Rohmer enjoyed a remarkable career. Between 1949, On Blu-ray 20th April, 2020 when he started work on his fi rst short fi lm, to the release Price £59.99 of his fi nal eff ort, The Romance of Astrea and Celadon, in 2007, Rohmer directed some 28 features, as well as Running time 580 mins numerous shorts and documentaries, many of them masterpieces. If citing, you are advised to consult the published version for pagination, volume/issue and date of publication Words for a Conversation: Speech, Doubt and Faith in the films of Eric Rohmer and Mia Hansen-Løve Introduction: Dialogue in Film On 5 April 2016, the cultural review programme La Dispute, broadcast on France Culture, reviewed Mia Hansen-Løve’s latest film , L’Avenir/ Things To Come (2016). Despite its success at the Berlin Film Festival, where it was awarded The Silver Bear, the film received a rather tepid reception on this programme. Intriguingly, the critical discussion about the film, and its perceived faults, centred on the question of its use of dialogue and then moved more generally to question whether speech is excessive in Hansen-Løve’s work. For Thierry Chèze, the key issue that Hansen-Løve’s work tackles is that of representing thought in the cinema: ‘She is once again in her comfort zone, where her films are about thought, the problem of how to show us words, how to put words onto film.’ Hansen-Løve’s fifth film, after the relative critical and audience failure of Eden (2014), returns to questions of how the predominantly visual art of cinema shows us interior process of thought and belief and their articulation in spoken debate between characters.

A review by Vincent Canby for The New York Times: It is late summer on the coast of Normandy where the beaches are broad and the weather unpredictable. As always, the North Atlantic is far too cold for anyone used to swimming in the soothing warmth of tropic seas, but the afternoon sun is bright and hot and the breezes are bracing. This is the halcyon setting of ''Pauline at the Beach,'' Eric Rohmer's effortlessly witty, effervescent new French film that opens today at the Lincoln Plaza 1. ''Pauline at the Beach'' is a comedy of romantic manners about six civilized people, each of whom works stubbornly, and at cross purposes, to enlighten someone else about the true nature of love. It's a sunny month in the country. Marion is a young, beautiful, successful fashion designer from Paris, currently in the process of divorcing a husband because she couldn't respond to his slavish devotion. Not unkindly she says of her marriage: ''That wasn't love. It was fidelity.'' Marion is waiting to fall in love for the first time. She wants an allconsuming love, one, she says, ''that burns.'' Henry, somewhat older (that is, somewhere in his 30's), is an ethnologist who lives most of the year in the South Pacific. He is divorced and vacationing in Normandy with his small daughter.
