Studies in the Legionary Centurionate
Studies in the Legionary Centurionate by James Robert Summerly Thesis presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy November 1990 Abstract The thesis consists of seven chapters and a second volume of legionary lists covering all the legions from the Latin speaking areas of the empire, except for III Augusta and VII Gemina. Each of the first five chapters contains a discussion of all the known multiple centurionate careers within the period covered by the chapter, and is followed by a detailed examination of these careers. The Foreword gives an outline of the historiographical material on legionary centurions and lists the questions which concern the first five chapters. Chapter one deals with the careers of legionary centurions during the Julio-Claudian period. Chapter two is concerned with Flavian careers together with a group of careers which are earlier than the second century, but are not closely dateable. Chapter three analyses the careers of centurions in the period c96-c140. Chapter four discusses the careers of centurions in the period c140-c194. Chapter five looks at careers of centurions in the period c194 onwards. The chapter also contains a group of careers which are post c100. Chapter six is an analysis of the role of centurions as revealed in the works of Tacitus. Chapter seven examines the relationship between the equestrian military career and the legionary centurion ate. Volume II contains an explanation of the epigraphic dating conventions used in the thesis, followed by twenty-four legionary lists. Each list contains a chronologically ordered discussion of every centurion attested on stone. -

Centurions: the Practice of Roman Officership
CENTURIONS: THE PRACTICE OF ROMAN OFFICERSHIP Graeme A. Ward A dissertation submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of History Chapel Hill 2012 Approved By: R. J. A. Talbert F. Naiden W. Lee J. E. Lendon S. T. Parker © 2012 Graeme A. Ward ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii Abstract GRAEME A. WARD: Centurions: The Practice of Roman Officership (Under the direction of Richard J. A. Talbert) This dissertation examines the military and social roles of legionary centurions in the Roman legions during the late Republic and Principate. It combines textual accounts of centurions from such authors as Caesar, Tacitus, and Cassius Dio, as well as epigraphic and archaeological evidence, including funerary monuments, dedicatory inscriptions, and the physical remains of legionary camps. By evaluating this evidence with reference to contemporary military and critical social theory (which integrates concepts of civil-military relations, compliance, social structures, and symbolic systems), I argue that centurions were crucial to defining and preserving important Roman military practices, and that an analysis of their position reveals important developments in Rome’s military hierarchy and imperial administration. The dissertation is organized into six chapters. The first chapter addresses the centurion’s disciplinary role in the legions, and reasserts the significance of corporal punishment in Roman military culture. Chapter Two investigates the centurion’s idealized behaviour in combat, and how it affected views of his leadership and personal authority. The third chapter demonstrates how in the Roman world these practices in asserting authority were complementary rather than contradictory. -

This is Roman empire military fiction, starting with the second invasion of Britain, and continuing with subsequent adventures in every corner of the empire. Oh and I hate Vitellius haha. The standard of characterisation is at such a relatively minimal two-dimensional level that you could pick and choose almost any character from this book and slot them straight into any other Roman fiction and they'd be just as invisible and unremarkable.
