President Krendl received her bachelor’s degree in English from , her master’s degree in journalism from The Ohio State University and her doctorate in communication from the University of Michigan. After holding teaching and administrative posi- tions at Indiana University from 1983 through 1996, President Krendl joined Ohio University as dean of the Scripps College of Communication. In 2004, she was appointed Academic Vice Presi- dent and Provost at Ohio University, and then in 2007, she was promoted to Executive Vice Presi- dent and Provost of the institution.

During President Krendl’s tenure, Otterbein has changed its name from College to University. It has also developed and launched its new undergraduate curriculum with its transition to se- mesters. The curriculum focuses on the distinctive character of Otterbein’s unique combination of curricular and experiential learning. In addition, since 2009, the institution has developed several new graduate programs in nursing, education, and business, including its first doctoral program, the Doctorate in Nursing Practice. Otterbein has also reached out to the region with the introduction of summer camps for audiences of all ages, a growing number of on-line courses, and special sections of courses for high school students. The institution has signed six new associate to baccalaureate degree agreements with six two-year institutions in the region, along with its standing agreement with Columbus State Community College.

Recognition for Otterbein since President Krendl’s appointment: Otterbein’s emphasis on innovations in student learn- ing earned it national recognition in 2010 by both U.S. News & World Report as an “Up and Comer” institution and the American Association of Colleges and Universities, which named Otterbein as one of six national demonstration sites, including Georgetown and Tufts. Also in 2010, Washington Monthly named Otterbein a Top 50 school for contributions to the public good linked to its focus on student engagement in community service, and Otterbein was named one of 14 national finalists in the national competition for the President’s Award for General Community Service, sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service.

President Krendl resides in Westerville with her husband, Richard S. Gilbert, who teaches journalism and communica- tion at Otterbein. Their two children, Claire and Tom, are both graduates of Northwestern University. Claire is a doctoral student at Penn State University, and Tom is a Fulbright Scholar studying in . President Krendl serves on the boards of the Westerville Area Resource Ministry, the Columbus YWCA, and I Know I Can. She is a member of Westerville Rotary, Women for Economic and Leadership Development, and the International Women’s Forum.

Otterbein University continues its proud tradition of athletic and academic excel- lence and has enjoyed over 100 years of intercollegiate competition. During that time, the University’s mission has been to balance academics and athletic competi- tion. Our commitment has been to the whole person, both in and out of the class- room. Our coaches are teachers first, mentors who make deep and lasting impres- sions on their students. While the drive to win is important, our real commitment lies in developing lead- ership traits and the competitive spirit, which will aid our scholar-athletes through- out their lives. On behalf of Otterbein’s faculty, students and administration, we thank you for your support of Otterbein’s athletics programs in 2012-13 and for your continuing involvement in their successes.

OTTERBEIN CARDINALS 7 season outlook The Otterbein University men’s basketball program will feature a new look for the first time in 40 years this coming season, as the program’s new era under first-year head coach Todd Adrian begins. Adrian, replacing longtime skipper Dick Reynolds, comes to Otterbein from Edgewood College (Wis.), where he amassed a 97-65 record over six seasons. Joining Adrian on the staff will be former Knox College (Ill.) head coach Rob Purlee, graduate assistant Micah Mills, volunteer assistants Darrell Miller and Robert Mock, and student assistant Taylor Harle. “I don’t know if I’ve ever been more excited to get through the preseason and start playing games again,” Adrian said. “I had the whistle in my mouth while running practice the other day and realized that I’m just as comfortable as I’ve always been. Getting acclimated with the little ins and outs at Otterbein was the challenging area, coaching is the easy part. I now feel like I’m at home and not at a new place.” Leading returners for the Cardinals include seniors Zach Bakenhaster and Tommy Waterwash, junior Max Van Meter, and sophomore Andy Yazrombek. Van Meter and Bakenhaster both scored in double figures last season, averaging 11.5 and 10.6 ppg., respectively. Water- wash played in 22 games, hitting some big shots in key moments, while Yazrombek gained quality experience by appearing in every outing but one. Zach Bakenhaster “Those guys are going to have to be teachers and coaches just like we are,” Adrian explained. “I need them to make everyone realize how hard we’ll need to compete every possession. I’m not concerned with lack of talent, but lack of experience.” Juniors Colin Echelberry and Jason Davis return, as do class- mates C.J. Julian and Matt McCollister, who are both back in the mix after spending last season away from the program. The two combined to contribute 11 ppg. and just over five assists per game two seasons ago. The staff also anticipates getting production from a handful of fresh faces, including junior newcomers Michael Tighe and Jon Juergens. “I’ve been pleasantly surprised with the parity of our guys,” Adrian explained. “We have good depth across the board and I’m eager to find out who can compete right now. We have seven guards that all bring something different to the table, so I want to know who can handle adversity and keep on performing.” The team opens its season Nov. 16-17 at the Al Van Wie Rotary Classic, hosted by the College of Wooster, before head- ing to the Holiday Inn Airport Tournament at the University of Rochester (N.Y.). Adrian is excited to see the progress his team makes as the season begins to move forward. “I’ve been happy with our work ethic,” Adrian said. “They seem hungry to get better and have really done everything I’ve asked this preseason. We have our sights set on continuing to Tommy Waterwash improve in these early season matchups, staying healthy, and being a quality team come January.”

34 OTTERBEIN CARDINALS facilities

Built in 1974, the Rike Center houses physical education facilities and offices. The domed roof encloses an intercollegiate hardwood basketball floor with seating for 3,100; equipped weight training room; two handball courts; and locker rooms for varsity teams and physical education classes. Conventional classrooms and offices are located on the perimeter. A $300,000 gift from the Rike family of Dayton inaugurated the capital campaign to finance construction of the Rike Center, which was built for about $1.5 million. In the spring of 2008, an $84,000 weight room was installed in the Rike Center, providing new flooring, free weights and equipment for use by student-athletes, students and staff. The project was spearheaded by the “O” Club with support from Robert Corbin ’49, Tom Weisenstein and the Fishbaugh Memorial Fund. Additional sports facilities at Otterbein include tennis courts, and separate fields for softball, baseball and soccer. Gifts from the Otterbein alumni and friends have helped provide educational opportunities through athletics for sports-minded students.

The Frank and Vida Clements Recreation and Fitness Center opened in the fall of 2002. The $9.5 million center enhances the curriculum and clinical experiences for students preparing for careers in health, fitness and athletic training. In addition, the center significantly increases the facilities for the athletic training, sport management, and health and fitness programs; increases the health, wellness and recreation programs for students, faculty and staff; enhances Otterbein’s capacity to attract future students; and expands the opportunities for partnership with the wider Columbus community. The center has two components: a 75,000 square-foot field house, complete with a sanctioned six-lane, 200-meter indoor track; and a two- story connector to the existing Rike Center, which features a high-tech cardiovascular fitness area, fully-equipped training and rehabilitation center, coaching offices, classrooms and a student lounge area.
