Community Managed Disaster Risk Reduction in Island and Central Tapanuli, Island in

Caritas Keuskupan (CKS) is a pastoral organization of Sibolga Diocese. It was created during the emergency situation of the Nias earthquake in 2005. CKS works in Nias Island and Central Tapanuli on Sumatra Island, Indonesia. Their experience in community managed disaster risk reduction (CMDRR) projects since 2007, with the accompaniment of IIRR, has provided CKS valuable lessons in delivering their service to those in need. Today, the community managed approach has become a holistic approach in their community development projects.

Project Goals and Objectives

The goal of this CKS project is to reduce the risk of the loss of lives in the communities affected by disasters. Specifically, this project has the following project objectives:  11 inclusive project communities consisting of 947 household and 4,694 population are more resilient to cope with disaster  The capacity of 6 parishes in emergency response preparedness has been developed  DRR issue has been mainstreamed in 4 communities of livelihood and health project of CKS; volunteers of CKS social division  Awareness on emergency preparedness among urban people of Gunungsitoli has been raised
