That activity will soon result in the completion of a new morgue for the community of Snow Lake. Susan Lockhart, the Executive Director of Planning for the NOR-MAN Regional Health Authority says that the project resulted from a request by the Town of Snow Lake to have the morgue unit currently housed in the town garage moved to the Snow Lake Health Centre. “As there was no physical space for the unit inside the Snow Lake Health Centre, we requested funding from Manitoba Health for an addition to the build- ing,” Lockhart said in a recent email. With that funding approved, Norman Mechanical Electrical from Thompson was the successful bidder on the project and construction of the new Snow Lake Morgue began on May 6. Lockhart advises that the construction consists of 260 square foot building that includes a walk-in cooler and vestibule, which will be accessible from the carport as well as from inside the Snow Lake Health Centre. (Source: Wikipiedia) Another question came to me asking what a stone was in terms of the measurement of weight and how it arrived by its name? The stone is a unit of mass. It is part of the Imperial system of weights and measures used in the British Isles, and formerly used in most Commonwealth countries. A stone is equal to 14 pounds and to 6.35029318 kilograms. Eight stone make a hundredweight in the Imperial system. In techniques for measuring weights, the Babylonians made important improvements upon the invention of the balance. Instead of just comparing the weights of two objects, they com- pared the weight of each object with a set of stones kept just for that purpose. In the ruins of their cities, archaeologists have found some of these stones finely shaped and polished. It is believed that these were the world’s first weight standards. To J.H. I’m not a big Detroit fan, who really is other than Roy Mclaughlin and family, but they sure put on a great display of hockey. They showed the young guys from Pittsburgh how it’s done. Now they just have to go to Montreal and find out how to party. That was a big celebration in Detroit and not a car burnt or a shop vandalized, no arrests or fights, geez what’s wrong with them. Now that hockey is out of the way for a couple of months, we’ll have to turn our attention to the Jays, who are playing just over 500 ball, or Mike Weir who is due to pull one out of the hat soon, or maybe hope springs eternal in Winnipeg with all these great quarterbacks in camp. I apologize if I have missed anyone, but Steve e-mailed me the list Brittany Ventura from his iPod, while in Winnipeg, and I’m sure he had more important things on his mind than my deadline; anyway thanks Steve. Christina Walker Just for all you old-timers that are wondering what the heck a multi Jenna Wiwcharuk-Roy event is, it consists of four events, two field and two track. It involves the 100-meter, the 800-meter, the long jump, and the shot put; there now don’t say you don’t learn anything from the paper. Nice to see some people at the park using the soccer field and the ball field. Maybe when we get enough people back in town that someone will step forward and get t-ball and softball going for their kids again. We have all the equipment, the facilities and the kids, we just need some From: Mayor and Council, the staff, employees, organization. Or maybe we should just get rid of the park and put houses and citizens of The Town of Snow Lake in there. Just think the town could collect taxes, they wouldn’t have to cut the grass and some people could have a house with a great view of the lake… Ted

Severe weather conditions often occur during Manitoba summers. Thunder, lightning, What’s on the horizon? hail and even tornadoes can develop quickly and have the potential to be extremely dangerous. That’s why it’s important for you to understand the risks created by severe summer weather and how you can protect Protect yourself yourself — weather or not. Look for the signs Hot and/or muggy days and warm nights indicate thunderstorms may be forming — so be from severe prepared. Keep your eyes on the sky and watch for the possible development of storms. Listen for the warnings Environment Canada monitors the weather and issues severe weather warnings. Check your weather. local television or radio station regularly during the summer to see if any severe weather is expected in your area. Purchasing a Weatheradio receiver would also give you 24-hour-a-day access to Environment Canada’s weather watches and warnings. Take shelter When severe weather threatens, fi nd shelter immediately. Do not follow storms in your car or attempt to take photographs. If you’re indoors, take shelter in the basement. If there is no basement, fi nd shelter in a small interior ground fl oor room away from windows. If you are in an offi ce or apartment building, take shelter in an inner hallway or room, preferably in the basement. If you are caught outdoors, lie fl at in a ditch or other low-lying area and cover your head. Be prepared Storms often strike quickly so it’s important that you have a plan in place before severe weather hits. Prepare a “72 Hour” emergency kit — Your kit should include food, clothing, blankets, medication, bottled water and fi rst aid and tool kits, as well as fl ashlights and a battery-powered radio — with extra batteries for both. You should have enough supplies in your kit to last 72 hours. Reduce the hazards on your property — Trim rotting or dead branches and cut down dead trees on your property. You should also check the drainage around your house to reduce the possibility of basement fl ooding. Secure everything that might be blown around or torn loose. Flying objects such as garbage cans and lawn furniture can injure people. Find out more Learn more about how you can protect yourself from the dangers of severe summer weather at manitoba.ca.
